Guy in a meeting said something normal and apologized for being “brutal.”
I said “please be 100% brutal so we’re clear with each other.”
I then told him his team was being unprofessional, showed lack of competence and unwillingness to learn. With receipts. He said hearing that made him angry.

Just your irregular reminder that neurotypical people don’t know what directness is and aren’t prepared for it.

@servo can you update your alt text so I can boost the image? Thanks! Edit to clarify: it’s there and it’s very good, it just doesn’t mention the flag. Or the cat, but that’s secondary. Don’t tell the cat I said that.

@fireborn@dragonscave.space I think the vibe coding trend in the blindness tech community is at odds between necessary empowerment and ignorance and disdain for expertise. I notice a lot of experts, in open source and in commercial tech companies, have treated blind users with disdain, laying the groundwork for a backlash as soon as this technology became convincing enough. Not good enough, convincing enough. Basically we’re now faced with a group of people who deeply emotionally distrust the ones who know what they’re doing, and can’t necessarily tell apart the experts who care from the ones who don’t. They also lack the ability to distinguish between what’s simple or complicated, since the whole process is a black box. Chances are nobody who was in a position to teach them five years ago bothered to. Ultimately, I think the solution is the same that was always proposed by the open source movement: community. The question is how to establish the necessary emotional bonds. #blind #FOSS

@hbons@mastodon.social lunar calendar? I’d think circular, I’d want to lean into that: phases of the moon, tides, seasons, plants for crops… All of those can become abstracted curve shapes.

@shaedrich@mastodon.online OK, thanks for clarifying. In that case 1) don’t worry about what the assistive technology does, we’re the ones who should worry about that and we may or may not want the mouthful and 2) the default behavior is to very reasonably just read the word without the brackets. It’s good that you care about this. An interesting related takeaway is that you can’t really ever assume you’re punctuation or formatting is getting through, sort of like speaking.

@shaedrich@mastodon.online your wording makes me think you’ve got this in reverse: it’s very unusual for a screen reader to be set up to read the brackets. That’s possible, if the user is interested in punctuation and symbols, but then if they are, let them be.

@maxwells_daemon@infosec.exchange good advice all around, but I’d also sides a chance of scope: I would use an existing turnkey solution for your store and focus on the wiki idea for learning. You can break a wiki or make it not very secure with relatively low risk, not so much for a store.

I think it is hostile, in so much as inclusion is often performative and vulnerable people are… vulnerable. Capital is lazy. (They call it “efficient.”)

@benroyce@mastodon.social @alice@lgbtqia.space it’s already allergy season, so I may be wrong, but this smells a bit like respectability politics in the context of disability. Is anybody “entitled” to level access or ramps instead of stairs? What does the word “entitled” mean in that context? This is absolutely a topic that involves conflicting access needs, between blind people and those with few spoons for writing alt text for whatever reason. That’s where encouraging the Alt4Me hashtag makes a lot of sense, but there’s also the question of whether anybody is “entitled” to post images, video or audio.

@protonprivacy@mastodon.social is offering to reserve an email address for my child for up to 15 years.

It’s actually tempting. I wonder if she’d be able to use email on her own in a few years. Maybe she’d use that instead of yelling at us for food?

It might be a moot point, I don’t expect her to develop opposable thumbs.

@violetmadder this is a really interesting point. The technology is offered with the caveats of personal responsibility, but also as the path the acquire the skills needed to exercise that responsibility. That’s definitely a Catch-22 and it puts some of my concerns into perspective, relating to using LLMs for learning.

@hbons@mastodon.social @iain@kolektiva.social you may actually want to read it alongside the Manifesto of the Communist Party. No, seriously. The shift in labor dynamics that happened with the Industrial Revolution is incredibly relevant to the shifts happening in software. That’s not even a “political” thing, it’s just relevant history.

@BoydStephenSmithJr yeah, you’ve definitely covered more of the bases than most. These are complex nuanced issues with a lot of edge cases in every direction. For context, I’m in Europe with the benefits of mixed-use zooming and decent transit, but still have a car, because I’m disabled and that make my life easier when it’s already very hard.

@BoydStephenSmithJr sure… the issue is that taxes on sales are non-progressive. The proportional impact would be much greater for low-income workers than for affluent people. The other concern is that US infrastructure is built for cars, not people. Many people can’t afford to live somewhere with better transit options, they need to drive to work, to live. To be clear, I’m with you on principle and on the basic ideas, it’s just that we need a carrot to go along with the stick. Maybe part of a wealth tax goes into public transportation and that breaks down the demand side of things, right?

@NinjaNia not super clear on your requirements, but Signal is:

  • not Google
  • not Meta
  • very secure
  • reasonably simple to setup (basically like WhatsApp) since it just uses your phone number

Caveat: you can only message other people who use Signal through Signal. You’ll still need an app for SMS.

When I post images online I write a description for them. I don’t all LLMs to burn through our natural resources to do it and don’t want others to do that either. When I can’t write a description, I don’t post the image. It’s very simple.

@fireborn@dragonscave.space that’s exactly what I think, but it’s worth exploring how and why we got here, and the implications for the paths forward. To an extent, I think the people who most need to read your post are already entirely uninterested. They’re getting their bespoke software which they don’t need to understand the code or requirements to. If it doesn’t work, they don’t think they need to understand that either. In this case, and others around LLMs, I think we need to be patient and figure out where we go next once the economics shake out. There will come a time again when talking to other humans about problems will be cheaper than burning through tokens.
