A beautiful little orchid that is very resilient and flowers on our street side, especially over the cooler part of the year. #orchids #aotearoa #doubtlessbay

@pipesunlimited@mastodon.nz Done it. This legislation is horrendous. Conservation land is for ALL of the people living in Aotearoa, not for vested interests. We should fight for its preservation forever!

The death of American democracy
@BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @paulh@cloudisland.nz @leighelse@mastodon.nz I agree totally with your views. Two important considerations. The US is a nation facing a decline in wealth and power. Less than 4% of the world's population live in the US. The current NZ coalition government seems hell bent on sticking with "the good old days ( which never were that good) rather than focusing on future resilience.

@petergleick@fediscience.org For us too. We will have recovered the total capital costvin 6.5 years - a similar timeframe. High production rates and increasing electricity costs shortened the payback time by about half.

@silsby@hcommons.social A brilliant article that reinforces many things including big IT's harmful strategy of including AI in everything, even if we don't want it.

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech There has been so much hype and so little delivery. The stock market is getting nervous about US AI companies, especially as China is catching up fast and delivering far more vost effective and open AI tools. Some people are going to lose a lot of money because they forgot the US has less than 4% of the world's population and there are many smart innovators among the other global 96%!

@joeress@mastodon.social Madness. AI has still to prove it is trustworthy. The evidence to date questions that. Not something I would use.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social So much money is being invested into dumbass projects - like the Metaverse, social media, space datacentres, ChatGPT and similar AI toys, and this ridiculous space mirror. How much do any of them actually add to the betterment of the human species.

@rmi@cloudisland.nz I always imagined that datacentres just contained masses of computers and memory modules that did their own thing. The whole idea of AI is to eliminate jobs!
