Just an old geek. Learned about computers on a CARDIAC (CARDboard Illustrative Aid to Computation). Then the math teacher at HS got an old Navy surplus computer with drum memory. It had a high speed optical paper tape reader. From there it was BASIC, Cobol, FORTRAN, CMS-2Y, Jovial, Ada. Did some Java and C but never got that good. In retirement learning Rust.

Note: the main picture is from the B-24 my father was co-pilot on in the South Pacific

@evacide@hachyderm.io Mine is PIN protected and I would never give my PIN. What I wonder is I put the duress PIN on a piece of paper and put it inside of the protective shield. If they found it and entered it am I liable because I knew they might do that. But truthfully I've forgotten my duress PIN and would need to do this to remember it.

@bsdphk Loved using Ada in the 80s, but all the C bros convinced everyone that Ada was too slow. Real world testing only showed about a 2-3% advantage to C. Until you forced the C coders to put in all the range checks, etc. that Ada provided, then it was a different story.

@nixCraft well glad I'm retired as my 1-finger salute when asked to a hand in front of face probably wouldn't go over very well. Maybe it would and that might indicate a good place to work.

@bookwar Nearly 5 decades ago pretty much 100% of the code I developed was for government work. My first job was a major upgrade of government developed system that had been running successuflly for over 2 decades. We were using a programming language developed by the government. This was on hardware built by private companies to government specs and requirements. Funny thing when Reagan came in and pushed COTS I regularly started seeing articles in RISKS about all the failures in the real world when military systems started using Windows and lots of non-government developed systems. Oh and that first system I worked on went back to work on a contract to maintain it. Was a nightmare of COTS hardware and software. The team I was on convinced them to swtich to C, I left and watched that ship sink from afar.

@MattisCB @dec23k Seems like that is how it works plus the distraction of listening to loud music: https://www.dekra.mx/en/keep-your-ears-open-in-traffic/

Keep your ears open in traffic!

Pedestrians and cyclists are too often distracted in traffic because they are wearing headphones or earbuds and listening to music.

@MizFidd@beige.party Called in sick once from a bad encounter. Boss was an ex-marine and thought I was slacking. So I came in the next day and they sent me home. I had gauze on both arms leaking yellow fluid. Side of my neck swollen on the left side (lots of gauze) and oozing. They said come back in next week.

She’s not the first powerbroker to get into trouble for mishandling e-mails. Reagan aides Oliver North and John Poindexter were convicted of destroying public records.

You plug it in and get a some data, a new phone number, and a few SMS msgs for 7-days. Create a throw away Google account. Create a new Signal account. Rinse and repeat.

@flyingpenguin@infosec.exchange Reminds me used to live in San Pedro and my dad would point out a Nike site. I believe it used to be a 16" gun emplacement during WW II. It finally dawned on me how my dad knew so much about them. His job for a while was photographing rocket engine tests as part of their development for the Navy.

@toddsundsted@epiktistes.com @dangoodin@infosec.exchange I would argue they not have lowered the cost. I don't believe anyone is really being charged the actual cost of running these LLM beasts. What I want to know is what is the actual cost to run these models. At least tell us how many tokens were burned (or water evaporated) to get these results.
