@badsamurai@infosec.exchange My dad has been fighting with ID.me for at least three years now to no avail. He still can't log in to the VA, and has to call in every time to renew his prescriptions. ID.me literally doesn't even work

Although, the fact that phones makers talk about the number of years of updates they provide, rather than being like an _actual_ computer, where you just like, install software, Like, when's the last time you saw Dell or Lenovo being like "This laptop comes with up to three years of Windows update"? When's the last time "unlocked bootloader" or "rootable" where selling points on a _real_ computer? Never. That's not a thing. That would be stupid and pathetic. Smartphones are stupid and pathetic. I'm probably still stupid and pathetic too, but

@ahDorchaich@ieji.de Most android phones I've had haven't been supported by any custom ROMs, and most custom ROMs I've tried haven't fixed my fundamental gripes :/

Hear me out: White and blue make _terrible_ indicator LEDs. Not just because those are pretty terrible colors for light you're gonna have on/flashing all the time, though that certainly is true. But also because they dim _orders of magnitude_ faster than red or green indicator LEDs. So eg on laptops and keyboards where you commonly have some lights that are on almost all the time and other lights that are only sometimes on (eg numlock vs scroll lock, or power vs charging), then after only like a year, when multiple lights are on, they'll be of wildly different brightnesses, and it drives me absolutely bonkers. Meanwhile I've had green LEDs that have had _decades_ of use that are barely dimmer than their counterparts which are only sometimes on.

@cy Well, that is unfortunately true. I do hate UEFI with the passion of all the fire in every possible universe. But x86 with UEFI is still better than ARM.

@kabel42@polymaths.social Well, we all know I think ARM is an awful garbage platform that no one should take seriously for any purpose. And sure, windows _does_ drop support for hardware. Which is dumb. But at least you don't have to rely on both microsoft _and_ dell, for example. Just microsoft. So you still get on average _way_ more years of support than you do with most android phones. And plus, unlike an android, an x86 laptop is actually a computer, so you can just install a real OS

I keep being too dumb and too lazy and too distractable to actually make any of the stuff I wanna make, and I have no one to blame but myself

Seriously though, if your game takes a long time to load, ffs pause it when it loads And also, if you could do some of the loading during the intro videos, that would be great. And, please only require user input on an interactive menu. Don't make me press start on a screen that only says press start, just to drop me into the main menu. The main menu alone is fine. It's what I came for.

@passthejoe@ruby.social Honestly the entire software industry, both free software and proprietary, should feel _deeply_ ashamed that they can't do better than adobe. Adobe are not only among the scummiest business people on the planet, but among the worst programmers. In my brief stint in a college IT department, Adobe was one of our top problem areas

@tilton Oh my god, anything that's used in construction or manufacturing, especially if it's round, is just absolute bullshit. Different manufacturers seem to disagree on the size of septic pipe by up to 25% in my experience, for example. (Two different supposed 4" fittings being different by almost an inch)

@techokami I used to think computers were all finite state machines, and all the chips were just full of physical bridges directly between the pins made of sticky metal particles that were drawn pin to pin by magnets at the factory to program it. Kinda like those magnetite toys, and that's why you weren't supposed to put magnets on computers.

@kabel42@polymaths.social This is true, but I don't see anyone trying to solve this problem. So as it stands, because 99.999% of stuff that uses x86 uses a BIOS, it's still the better bet
