Yay, I'm finally Windoze-free! 🎉 This MS Surface Pro 7 was the last holdout, but I decided today was the day. It's been a bit of a PITA, but it's done now. Huge thanks to @techviator@noc.social for pointing me to this tutorial:

It mostly worked, but I did have the same touchscreen issue as others. 'FATurbo's' reply (#13) provided the fix. I still couldn't rotate my screen, but a quick duck search led me to this fix (for Zorin):

@mykl@infosec.exchange About 10 yrs ago, a friend and I were talking about whatever, when climate change came up. He brought up wildfires, and I made something of a side comment, "We're going to miss the Boreal forest when it's gone." We both nodded in resigned agreement and that was that. Honestly, I never expected how fast we've gotten to where we are. Shit's gone (not going--Gone) exponential.
Though I've been using #Linux 'almost' exclusively for the past yearish, I'd never hooked up a printer. I dug out my inkjet, then buckled in for what I assumed would be a PITA. After wasting 40 min roaming around the internet looking for drivers and such, I thought maybe I should actually check my system first. Lo and behold, #Zorin had immediately picked up the damn thing and had it ready to go the entire time. Duh. Yes, #Windows hostages, Linux really can be just as easy to use. 🙄😑

@itsfoss 100% agree! It was Win 11 that finally prompted me to act. My four daily drivers are all now Linux. I replaced W11 on my primary laptop with Zorin last year, my streaming box is a Meerkat with Pop!OS, my Fairphone has /e/OS, and as of a few days ago, my MS Surface tablet is finally running Zorin.

@IHasWisdom When I was a teen, my buddy and I went on a sign-stealing jag. After a while, we had nearly 30 signs of all shapes and sizes. Once the thrill was gone, we loaded them all into the trunk of his '67 Impala late one night. We pulled up in front of the highway dept when no one was around and dumped them all in front, before hauling ass. Dunno what they thought come morning, but we'd had our fun. 🛑 ⚠️ 🚸 ⛔

@Hex@kolektiva.social When I needed a new dumbbox last year, I specifically ordered the 2024 version. They shipped me the '25 version of that same model. Before opening, I looked it up and it was wall-to-wall AI trash. I immediately returned it, then ordered the '24 from someone else.

@andrewblasco@masto.es It's a bit buggy, but mostly fine. The touchscreen has a mind of it's own at times, responding only when it feels like it. Same for the stylus. I'm keeping a small wireless mouse plugged in so I can use it to get stuff done as needed. The cameras don't work at all, but I always kept them covered with electrical tape anyway, so no loss for me. The on-screen keyboard can be a bit challenging to bring up at times as well. It fits my current needs, but I may look beyond Zorin.

@CppGuy Actually, by far the most common I've seen around the country are like the one to the left with the "horns" on top. These are both older styles though, and seem to be getting superceded by a single, hollow steel post design. If you zoom in, you can see them in the line to the right of this one.

@mttaggart I was one of the foot-draggers who clung to IE waaaay beyond it's useful service life. Had Microshat presented Edge in any way other than "YOU'LL USE IT AND YOU'LL LIKE IT!", I might have become a user. So, I guess I have them to thank for me never becoming an Edge user! 😀

No packing paper or any wrap whatsoever. I received one glass pitcher, and 12000 bits of broken glass in a box. Had a drone been involved, I'd've probably rcvd 24000 bits.

@skinnylatte Present-day Nevadan, can confirm for my fellow residents. Also, I grew up in Idaho in the '70s, and even that long ago, distaste for California implants was high. It's the skewed buying power as already mentioned, but also the perceived insistence on bringing CA values to the new place, rather than conforming to the established norms there.
