"What do you think is probably the happiest moment in one's whole life? I think it's the moment when one is walking in one's garden, perhaps picking a few dead flowers, and then suddenly one thinks: My husband lives in that house - and he loves me." Sigh. This is your regular reminder that ebooks may not be listed on Amazon and yet STILL EXIST. Creative Commons-licensed ebooks, for example. Banned on Amazon, they nonetheless STILL EXIST. You can buy them. You can buy them in mobi format. You can read them on your Kindle. Amazon is not the boss of you! Nor, to return to my original point, is it the sole arbiter of ebook existence. #ebooks #books #Amazon #CreativeCommons

Ever find an old work of art that looks like you? This is La Petite Couturière (The Little Dressmaker) painted by Jules Breton in 1868. She has my taste in long full skirts and headwear, my overflowing mending basket, my hair, and most weirdly, my face (or at least, my face circa 2010). What she clearly doesn't have is my taste in colour. Yellow and orange? Great. Lavender, blue, and black together? Lovely (though admittedly not on me). All five at once? Yikes. #art #doppelganger

Best garden folly idea ever: the triangular Thunder House of Munstead Wood was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens to give a good view of thunderstorms in the valley and hills surrounding the River Wey.

@aligorith@mastodon.nz I got some dwarf lavender seed today. My "growing things from seed" record isn't bad; my "having seedlings survive transplantation to the garden" record is dire. Here's hoping!

@mlanger@mastodon.world @LJ@sunny.garden I don't have an ereader myself, but I do sell (DRM-free) ebooks (see https://deborah.makarios.nz/works) But not many of them, alas, partly because so many people a) look on Amazon and decide since it's not there it doesn't exist, and b) confidently announce to others around the internet that my ebooks don't exist. Publishing independently - especially under CC licenses - has enough challenges as it is, without anti-publicity denying the existence of what you're trying to sell.

@royal@theres.life Applaud extra loudly when he comes on stage for the curtain call at the end of the show, maybe cheer if that seems to fit with the culture of the theatre. ("Bravo!" is traditional.) If his performance was really good, you could even give a short standing ovation when/if he is the focus during the curtain call. (Some shows have everybody come on at once for the curtain call; others have people come on singly or in small groups.) A bouquet or gift is also a possibility - you could ask the theatre ahead of time whether you can go round to the dressing rooms before or after the show to deliver it, or whether Front of House staff (box office, ushers, etc - the theatre staff who interact with the public rather than working backstage) can take it round - or even, as is done in some theatres, hand a bouquet up to the actor during the curtain call so everyone can see how well regarded he is.

I recently learned that one can put moss in a blender with some yoghurt, paint the resulting gloop on to a surface, and - provided it stays damp - the moss will just get back to mossing like nothing happened. Even metal isn't as metal as that. #moss #mosstodon #MetalAs

@Lilysea@aus.social It seems bizarre to me that people would break the law (and, as you say, risk the ecological damage) for the sake of cockroaches, especially if they're not even planning to keep them. I feel like someone's mum yelling "you don't need to buy cockroaches! We have cockroaches at home!"

@daniel@theres.life I know someone who came to faith because as he walked down the street, he saw someone whose face was shining (he didn't specify whether literally or not). He followed them, and, seeing them go into a church, concluded that the church was where he would find what he was looking for.

@stephen@ephemera.vital.org.nz I occasionally comment, and I like it when others comment on my blog - makes a change from Russian spambots! I guess it depends in part on what kind of blog it is. Is it intended purely for the impartation of information or display of something, or might interaction bring an extra dimension to it?

Today I deleted my Shop account. I didn't know I had a Shop account. I never signed up for a Shop account. I never set a password for a Shop account. I never read or agreed to the terms & conditions or privacy policy. According to the vendor, "it appears that you followed the correct steps to avoid opening a Shop Pay account." And yet... The link you want, by the way, is shop.app/delete-account #ecommerce #shopify #enshittification #consent
