@sundogplanets@mastodon.social I see you use Cory Doctorow’s asbestos analogy. I’ve used that as well, but someone pointed out to me that unlike “AI”, asbestos was in fact very good at what it was used for. Lately I’ve referred to the early 20th century craze for putting radioactive material everywhere, as supposedly healthy, for a better analogy. https://www.orau.org/health-physics-museum/collection/radioactive-quack-cures/pills-potions-and-other-miscellany/radithor.html and https://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2004-08/healthy-glow-drink-radiation/

@beemoh @ianbetteridge Good point about affordability. I am sympathetic but not necessarily in agreement. It's well known that noisy, polluting, and distressing industry gets located nearer poorer neighborhoods that already exist, and that's a problem. But the cases I'm thinking of specifically involve gentrification of warehouse and industrial districts, and the people moving in definitely aren't lower income.

@ancoghlan@mastodon.social that quote is not in the ACM brief at all! The article pulled it from a statement by the lead author, who happens to work for a company using AI for digital forensics.. The newstack article seems not to have any excerpts directly from the brief, and I wonder if the author even read it. The brief: https://dl.acm.org/doi/full/10.1145/3807518

@glyph@mastodon.social ask any programmer and they’ll tell you how most of the time when they find a good tool, they have to sneak it in the back and hope that when management finds out, the team has already made it essential to their work and have facts to prove its value. Tools imposed top down from senior execs are almost universally useless and reviled.

@petergleick This was the flu inaccurately called the Spanish Flu because the Army told the story that GIs had picked it up in Europe, and the press picked it up because of anti-Spanish sentiment . The earliest probable cases were documented in March 1918 in Haskell County, Kansas, United States, near hog and chicken farms.

"These things have in common a certain incuriosity that I have found endemic among a certain kind of tech enthusiast, particularly the ones who are most interested in startups and entrepreneurship. Perhaps they have been so siloed that they did not realize their “discovery” was well -known elsewhere, or perhaps their self-conception is that they are the smartest, and if they don’t know something, no one knows it."

@cadey Isn't the point of the check that the language models don't "get" negation? There have been several good looks at this over the last couple of years at least. https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.00105 and https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.22395v2 or, more casually, https://seantrott.substack.com/p/llms-and-the-not-problem As far I as understand it, the need to have an external determination of negation makes sense. Not like this, though.

Negation Blindness in Large Language Models: Unveiling the NO Syndrome in Image Generation

Foundational Large Language Models (LLMs) have changed the way we perceive technology. They have been shown to excel in tasks ranging from poem writing and coding to essay generation and puzzle solving. With the incorporation of image generation capability, they have become more comprehensive and versatile AI tools. At the same time, researchers are striving to identify the limitations of these tools to improve them further. Currently identified flaws include hallucination, biases, and bypassing

@polotek@social.polotek.net Yes on having conversations, no on training. The better teams used points or shirt size; those close to the project understood their imprecise nature. I read widely. no. 1: you can only estimate something you've done before, as another comment mentioning Steve McConnell says. Look back is important. Retrospectives and velocity aren't enough. Individual programmers need to be taught how to record their work and compare results with estimates.

That almost throwaway line says a lot about what the Internet can be if we make better choices about where we spend our billions of dollars.
