@LeviKornelsen@dice.camp @pluralistic@mamot.fr The real fun will begin when they finally settle on a distro. The Red Hat/IBM C-suite are probably already prepping lawyers who can practice law in Denmark. Some judge is gonna have to yell at all the companies "Shut up you guys. You're all pretty. Now stop it."

@jerry@infosec.exchange My grandfather grew up in the 1910s and 1920s. I'm pretty sure he was out in the sun on Brighton Beach without sunscreen or a hat. He was always having stuff carved off his face by the demotologist. I took that has cue to stay out of the sun. I think I was 12 when I had a really bad sunburn that peels but after that, I always covered up. At 70, I wear a hat and sunglasses on my 40min daily walks but don't bother covering my arms. I still have sun damage. Just had a bit frozen off my forehead and a piece of my nose reconstructed from my neck. Don't skip the hat.

@fatsam@mstdn.social I was summoned for jury duty almost yearly but usually told not to show up most of the time. Twice I had to go in. Once for a 6 week trial which I told the clerk "nope" and got rescheduled. The second time I almost got selected but convinced the judge that I'd loose $1600 as a self-employed manual therapist if I sat for the week-long trial. I set aside 3 days for duty but her trial would have wiped out 7 days of sessions. Now at 70, I'm exempt in CA. I used to game voir dire selection questions with statements like "I'm a linux system administrator. I'm used to people lying to me." (stole that one from a former IRS auditor who retired to teach classes on "how to avoid tax audits on business returns."). Never had to use it. Good luck.

@harrybo@gamerstavern.online On the other side of the see-saw, I tried going to two gas stations to put air in my tires. I couldn't read the display on the air dispenser as it charged me $1 to do nothing. The Attendants couldn't help. I'm used to doing the usual things like this with my car and even remember when getting air and water at my local 76 was free. I ended up going to the tire place where I bought them. For $10, they filled and tested all 4 and rotated them. They even told me the tie rod u joints were a mess but completely functional. I'm seriously considering getting one of those big air stations that AAA use to reinflate flats rather than the wimpy one I got on Amazon that did nothing. Youtube's Project Farm even did a review of which ones are worth it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwbQ8eEBn68

I Didn't Think a Tire Inflator Could Be This Good!

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Actually, for me, the choice of Linux distro is more a "what do I want to use every day?" Since I only have 1 laptop rather than a stack of old ones, it's harder to change the OS and configure a new system. I found Zorin and quite like it. When MacOS becomes unsupported on my laptop, I'll upgrade to it.

@cpi@mastodon.social Compairing my memory of the DeLaurentis version of this box (very heavy metal like the entire design aesthetic of that universe) vs. Villeneuve's version. It looks old and well used, making me wonder when the Bene Gessert started the screening process (10,000 years ago at it's inception?). And is the Gom Jabbar a single use poisoned needle? How is it transported so that some acolyte doesn't accidentally stick herself while schelping a Reverend Mother's luggage? DUNE: Prophesy has given us an early look into that universe. It was quite interesting and I'm hoping there's more to come. Not really interested in any of the Kevin Anderson/Brian Herbert stuff. It wasn't very well written and thought out, kinda like week-old left overs that haven't gone bad yet, but you know you'd better eat before they do.

@DeborahLeagueFineArt@socel.net On the plus side, it sparked a discussion paint finish from a number of friends. A neighbor is just gaga for "matte" finish. Another told me that satin for walls wears better and gives more depth. I thought my contractor would just be buying the same white paint for everything, but nope. Multiple finishes. Last time I painted was 30 years ago, so this is all new to me.

@rocketsoup@mastodon.social Sometimes, managers forget to coordinate people's vacations. All the senior SREs are having fun somewhere else while the junior SREs and interns are running things. Then an intern points out that support for AWS' Postgres 8 is ending on Friday and BANG, major database upgrade project in 2 days is born. Yes, this really happened to me. I sent out a company-wide email that a major customer's Postgres HAD to be upgraded. No objections for 2 days. 30 minutes into the 5pm upgrade, the sales manager calls to postpone it. Bzzzzt. Happened anyway as AWS' automated upgrades can't be stopped. Yes, I backed up everything beforehand.

@artbysarahsammis@socialbc.ca Those tea caddies remind me of the fancy smorgasbord appetizer my lady friend and I ordered at SCANDIA, an upscale restaurant in LA after she was accepted to grad school. There were very fancy canapés and other nascherei. I tasted one which turned out to be a very rich pate. "Here taste this!" I said to her and offered her a bite. She tasted it. "Did you just put liver in my mouth?" she said as her eyes narrowed. I guess not everyone grew up casually noshing on their Nana's chopped liver on matzie before Sunday dinner.

I have a colleague who's a DD cup size and it never occurred to me that it might be painful for a 15lb cat to stand on my chest and kneed before plotzing down until she mentioned it. I can't imagine what she thought of the prospect of my 20lb black cat making himself at home on her chest.
