Okay great, but steam engines from the mid 19th century could probably outrun humans too.

Artificial intelligence may have it's weaknesses, but you've got to admit it does have some kind of strange power to drain all the human intelligence out of the minds of business and political leaders.

Youngest: A mayfly, born this morning and destined to die this evening, which landed on my nose. Oldest: A mountain with ancient bones, eroded by the aeons to a mere hill with sides of crumbling rock. Oh you mean humans? Well, anyone between the ages of 47 and 52 I guess.

waiting for the light When I used to drive through the intersection where that situation would happen I'd ignore their requests for money (I didn't have much) but unless I was in an especially bad mood I'd give them a friendly hello, and sometimes they'd be happy enough to stop and chat with someone who treated them like human being for a moment. Otherwise they'd ignore me and move on, which is also fine.

There may be something relevant in wikipedia's list of propaganda techniques but I think the mostly it's just what is technically called "lying."

I'm not much of a fan of the NSA or anything, but that comparison seems unfair to the NSA. I imagine Palantir is more like a souped-up bullshit-ridden profit-driven Stasi.

A mayor might choose to consider the purpose of all such reports to be for information purposes. Whether a call to action is included needn't make any difference to whether you should take action.

Feels like it's straight out of a history textbook from the future, illustrating how the political class of the 2020s got to be completely out of touch with reality in the years before the event.

The undersigned civil society organizations, companies, and cybersecurity experts, including members of the Global Encryption Coalition, urge the federal government to withdraw Bill C-22, An Act respecting lawful access.

The Supporting Authorized Access to Information Act, will force services to install “technical capabilities” to access Canadians’ communications and sensitive data. The consensus among cybersecurity experts is clear. There is no way to provide backdoor access to encrypted data and communications without compromising the privacy and security of millions of law-abiding citizens.

I have just noticed that there is a hole in my boots.

To test the hypothesis that modern materials science and manufacturing techniques had rendered obsolete Sam Vimes' famous saying about boots, last autumn I bought the cheapest winter boots available at Walmart.

They are not fashionable, well-fitting, or particularly warm, but they looked indestructible and waterproof — made of seemingly tough material with good think soles. The soles probably are indeed indestructible, but just at the heel where they meet the other part of the boot, some kind of design flaw has resulted in a hole in exactly the same spot on each boot after only one winter of light use.

I will patch them and see if the repair holds next year.

For those who don't believe that a VPN can improve your privacy, here's a simple experiment you can run at home: Get two similar computers, one with a VPN and one without. Use them both to download Hollywood movies through bittorrent, and see which one results in notifications of incoming lawsuits from movie studios. Fortunately, there's no need to do this experiment yourself. Millions of people around the world have already done it for you.

I download albums (through piracy or not) and add them to my modest mp3 collection the same way I used to buy CDs — once in a while when it seems like a good idea. If there's an album I don't think is worth listening to again, I delete it.

Nobody has to talk to anyone else, but the problem with the situation you've described is that they can choose to do so. Whatever semblance of anonymity is provided that way is not strong enough to deserve the appellation of "zero knowledge". That would imply mathematical certainty of it, not just a system where you're assigned a unique ID and a record is kept of it but the central authority solemnly promises not to tell anyone who it belongs to.

There must be a better way to hold together a big coalition than love or hate of a charismatic cult leader. If the best we can do right now for an organizing principle is being anti-Trump, we need to come up with something better before he's gone. Getting rid of the Trumpists is just the first step of many in restoring democracy.

I expect reddit will roll it out slowly and stop if they're losing too many users. If they actually follow through and impose age "verification" on everyone it'll be a bigger exodus than anything seen before — so they probably won't.

Simply counting the number of posts that favour Poilievre, as they apparently did, greatly understates the degree of bias that x.com users are subjected to. One should also take into account the weighting given those posts by the algorithms that generate people's feeds, and even if that's attempted it would remain difficult to see how the audience is manipulated in more fine-grained ways depending on demographics and analytics in order to give Elon's chosen outcome for the election the greatest possible support.

free market economy Whatever you imagine the ideal of a free market to be like, the situation with grocery stores in Canada sure isn't one. It's not free, it's all locked up by a profit-maximizing oligopoly — just like far too much of the rest of the economy.

I've seen more than one person saying that "the wrong people are getting rich."

It brings to mind the famous saying — the love of money by the wrong people is the root of all evil.

I haven't yet read the entirety of Ed Zitron's latest novel-length lament about the ongoing madness, but so far I'm wondering if he is slightly imprecise about who it is that profits from the enshittification of the stock market that he's describing. Maybe for the most part it's not simply businesses treating their shareholders badly — it's CEOs and finance people treating their own businesses badly. Many of the deals going on look as if they don't benefit anyone other than the people who get paid for arranging them.

Even if you have a zero-knowledge proof that "this person is at least 18" (without revealing their actual age) you still need to identify which person it is that the proof pertains to. That is the difficult part.
