If the UK expects young people to swap social media for youth clubs, then they need to make youth services statutory so that local authorities HAVE to fund them. Right now there is no legal requirement to fund youth services run by the local authority.

@nxskok@cupoftea.social @stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe Yeah, back then you were 'expected' to at least try and solve an issue before even asking for help and advice, provide some evidence you have found some instructions and the response if you had not was pretty robustly 'go away' and that is putting it nicely in some cases. Granted even back then there was bad how_tos or other information, in that case you would probably be directed to a better set of instructions, so it wasn't all bad. People in 2026 want instant gratification, instant answers and are not prepared to put in the effort required.

@stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe It seems there is no hope with some people, too many people seem to be shouting about AI being the solution to all problems and a major job killer, reading your post I get the opposite impression. I hardly use AI, but then I don't need to look much up, if I do I find what i want with a search engine, BUT am usually looking for specific sources of information. For example there was an interesting physics article in one of the papers, so in an effort to try and find more info I undertook a duckduckgo search and found info on phys.org and arxiv.org both to me useful and importantly more reliable sources, many of the items that came up were for other newspaper articles. I sometimes feel I am some sort of exception to what others are doing.

@hongminhee Public transport to get to/from employment is fine, if one say works in an office, a school etc, you turn up and stay in the same place all day. However if you work somewhere and need to visit clients, you need to get to them, and public transport does not go everywhere, this is the case if you work as a care worker, solicitor and other jobs.

@Strandjunker Indeed, and after 9/11 spouses of those killed in the attacks were very much at risk of deportation due to their visas being tied to those of their now dead spouses. I can't remember the full details from the time or where I read about this, but felt it was unfair even then.

@adhdeanasl@beige.party I was not sure exactly what Deadnaming meant, so looked it up. WikiPedia gives the following definition "Deadnaming is the act of calling a transgender or non-binary person by their birth name or other former forename (their 'deadname') after they have chosen a new name.[1] Many transgender people change names as part of gender transition, and wish for their former name to be kept private. " I am sharing to help others on Fedi too. Hope this helps.

@Aaron_DeVries@mastodon.social +1 One of the things that appears to have come from flying over the far side of the moon, is that it is far more bumpy and rocky than first thought, so areas we thought may be suitable for landing, may not be. This will be essential for future missions that intend to set up any sort of base on the moon.

@openrightsgroup So how do we turn this in to real action then, as we found in Australia kids will find ways around everything, how to reach out and help them with that. Lets put some teen rebel hats and work with them to fight back, Youth services won't help with this, as they will want to be seen as compliant, we need a rebellion of people to do stuff, that the government can't stop us doing. With the old web of trust, I would print off a gpg key, take this to key signing and give this to another user, show my ID and job done, they know that key belongs to me. Lets find a way to do stuff and help / support youngsters do the same.

I agree, all they do is tinker round the sides to try and make it look as if they are doing something meaningful. To anyone who fails to look deeper and disect what they do critically it looks as if they are doing something.

I think it is also time to stop being nice, how about you say to the UK execs,

  1. Massive Fine
  2. Block ( so people in the UK can't access)
  3. Prosecution of execs, including arrest and prison

Government need to 'grow some' and start acting.

Once UK employees of Meta, TikTok start finding them selves facting prison, fines and even being made unemployable (due to criminal records) they will act.

Given it has taken about two weeks to get a ship ready (HMS Dragon) ready for deployment, then it will take at least a week (or two) to get to Cyprus, if we want to send a ship to the straight of Hormuz, that would probably take even longer,

The UK may as well not bother.

The whole NAVY should be on standby for immediate deployment, so loaded up with everything needed (inc fuel) so it can just go.

It should have been on standby when the uS first sent it's Armarda, even if just to protect UK interests such as bases.

Not that we should be getting involved.

@ajroach42@retro.social If Social media is harmful to children, a ban on under 16s will surely just delay that harm until they are 16, meanwhile the additive nature of social media traps parents so they spend more time scrolling then setting the right example for their children and putting phones down. We NEED to deal with the toxic nature of mainstream, big tech social media OR get more people on to Fedi, and keep building something that works.

@ajroach42 One of the strengths of platforms such as Roblox is that kids can find people to talk to all over the world, so a few children across timezones can chat, and learn about different cultures and to respect each other. Adults on the other hand, start wars, attack each other and cause more problems than kids do, if kids behave badly, usually looking at the parents explains alot.

Trump urges UK and other nations to send ships to help secure Strait of Hormuz after Iranian attacks

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ckg1w1jp8kjt

So what you are saying Mr Trump is after causing chaos in the middle east, launching an illegal war agains a sovereign nation, murdering their leader, killing 1000+, including some how accidentally blowingup a school killing 150 mostly children, civilians, (on 'claims') the country was about to attack, you expect other countries to go in to defend against the consequences, but their Army, Navy and Air force in the firing line and risk terror retaliatory attacks elsewhere in the world.

To paraphrase part of the 'Dads Army' theme tune "Who do you think you are kidding mr Trumpy'

and

Trumpy has only got one ball,
Hesgarth has two but very small,[a]
Vancy is rather sim'lar,[b]
But poor old congress has no balls at all.

Israel says it still has thousands of targets in Iran, as Trump and Starmer discuss Strait of Hormuz - follow live
BBC News

Israel says it still has thousands of targets in Iran, as Trump and Starmer discuss Strait of Hormuz - follow live

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the country has not "asked for a ceasefire" after Trump said it had wanted a deal.

@elgringomexicano@mastodon.social @jbjrkng@hachyderm.io uKids have already found their way around face recognition by using computer game charaters, they will find ways to circumvent a lot of this, what does worry me is if they government decide to fiddle with things like VPNs, as that could have wider implications. Even back when adult magazines were on the top shelf out of reach, kids got hold of em, even if it was copies of H&E (which is a natrist magazine), they got hold of that too. This is not simply about nudity, Posts promoting self harm as a response to mental health issues, or promoting far right or other extemism, mis information etc etc, of course there are ways around that by teaching critical thimking and how to search for and verifiy information, this requires ALL curriculum subjects to adapt to teach that too i think. People such as Andrew Tate offer great influece, so kids need positive role models BOTH offline and in the online world too.

@gael So what can we DO about it????, my local linux user group in Devon is DEAD, on here we are all just talking to each other as in the converted, we need to bring in the masses from out side these circles, which I have no idea HOW to do that on my own. Any event such as Software/Hardware/Document freedom day or similar NEEDS a few people to attend and run so it does not look like a one person band trying to do the event. I am at a total loss how to keep going with this, but I fully understand the concerns, but trying to tell others that is like talking to a brick wall, gets nowhere. Most people use big tech and are not going to just give that up, despite all the noise about privacy, spying, tracking etc etc. Unless those doing BASIC computer courses are told they have choices say MS office vs LibreOffice people will go with what they are aware of, and shun alternatives as they feel there is a catch.

BBC news now reporting 1000 casualties. Needless loss of life, however is there a breakdown for civilian casualties, goverment casualties, security / army / police casualties. We should count family members of regieme members as civilians however.

Time for some deeper breakdowns so we can see who is being impacted.

@openrightsgroup I agree here, banning under 16s will, for the most part delay their exposure to the harmful/toxic content, so pretty much wrap them up on cotton wool, they turn 16 and their Social feeds will be full of harmful content. We need to deal with the content. But I also agree that this is also now being used to force through digital ID via the backdoor, something nobody wants.
