🔥 NEW: Ecologist Olivia Sanderfoot at #Cornell is building a new field she calls smoke #ecology, asking how #wildfire smoke affects birds even hundreds of kilometers from any flames. #Birds breathe roughly twice as much air as #humans per breath, using rigid lungs and air sacs, so smoke hits them harder. Sanderfoot is combining atmospheric #chemistry, satellite #data, and thousands of volunteer nest-box observers to track what birds do when #smoke arrives. 👉 https://www.npr.org/2026/10/06/nx-s1-5991854/wildfire-smoke-ecology-birds-wildlife-health #ecology #ornithology #climate #conservation #bluebirds #science #wildlife #nature #birding #research #animals

A covalent bond is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electrons to form electron pairs between atoms. These electron pairs are known as shared pairs or bonding pairs. The stable balance of attractive and repulsive forces between atoms, when they share electrons, is known as covalent bonding.[1] For many molecules, the sharing of electrons allows each atom to attain the equivalent of a full valence shell, corresponding to a stable electronic configuration. In organic chemistry, covalent bonding is much more common than ionic bonding, where atoms are separate and merely associated by electrostatic attraction. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covalent_bond #chemistry #physics #caturday #caturdayeveryday

Important note about ideal amplifiers in electronics >Amplifier is the generic term used to describe a circuit which produces and increased version of its input signal. However as we will see in this introduction to the amplifier tutorial, not all amplifier circuits are the same as they are classified according to their circuit configurations and modes of operation. >In “Electronics”, small signal amplifiers are commonly used devices as they have the ability to amplify a relatively small input signal. For example from a Sensor such as a photo-device, into a much larger output signal to drive a relay, lamp or loudspeaker for example. https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/amplifier/amp_1.html #Electronics #electrónica #Physics #Mathematics #Chemistry #Lineair #Algebra

Baking egg shells, as one does. For most of my life I added these to holes dug for tomatoes (because Mom), but I've since learned that that has no effect at all because the calcium carbonate doesn't really dissociate in real time unless you dose it with acids. Same reason I've stopped adding them to the compost. I'm going to grind them up and offer to local birds (I don't have chickens anymore). #CalciumCarbonate #eggs #eggshells #birds #calcium #calcite #chemistry #compost #tomatoes

Happy birthday to pharmaceutical #chemist Alice Ball (1892-1916) who developed 1st effective treatment for #leprosy. Though her life was cut tragically short, her research saved 1000s from exile & painful, ineffective lifelong treatment for leprosy, & she was a trailblazer for both women & Black scientists. Ball studied #chemistry at UW earning a BSc & 2nd degree in pharmacy 2 years later. 🧵 https://minouette.etsy.com/listing/578429732 #printmaking #sciart #BlackInSTEM #womenInSTEM #histsci

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: ☄️🧂 A #meteorite that crashed through a #NewJersey home in 2024 contained preserved salts and organic compounds from its parent #asteroid, evidence of ancient brines interacting with #carbon #chemistry. Researchers found amino acids and other #prebiotic #molecules in the rock. The findings offer new clues about how life’s building blocks may have been delivered to early #Earth. 👉 https://www.seti.org/news/alien-world-chemistry-found-inside-meteorite/ #space #science #astrobiology #seti #nasa #aminoacids #solarsystem #earthscience #meteor

Just been helping my son with chemistry, and accidentally flipped the narrative. He was looking at the Haber–Bosch process for making ammonia. I asked him about what ammonia's good for, the timing of the development, the timing of World War 1... He was so suddenly interested like he's never been interested in chemistry before. Then we got onto older ways of extracting nitrates from urine, something that Germany also had an advantage in because they drank so much beer. And then to the initial extraction of phosphorus. And then to calculating that, if only one person were involved, it'd take about a decade of collecting urine to replicate Brand and Kunckel's work. Apparently the chem teacher never talks about things like this. Even though we've been talking about the importance of doing so since the 1990s, and it's supposedly REQUIRED by the national curriculum. #school #chemistry #histSci #histSciTech

Hey, can I get a #chemist on the line? Maybe one with #cosmetic or #polymer knowledge? So, I have psoriatic arthritis, and a manifestation is a degradation of my nails. And I was looking into a product, which is advertised as "beneficial" to one's nails, which is not a thing associated with manicure products. It is a #uv cured gel, but rubberized in some way. Here's the thing, all of these "gel" or uv cured products appear to be #resin. Am I wrong in assuming that both long term exposure to resin and UV is incredibly dangerous? When I've done resin work, I've been fully masked and gloved and all of the safety sheets say to avoid skin contact. I stopped working with it because of safety and environmental concerns. How is nail resin any more safe? #Chemistry #question #healthAndSafety

Rapid #PCB #manufacturing . Turnaround time: about 3h. Yield: 67%. Minimum resolved spacing: 0.1mm, thinnest trace: 0.2mm. Minimum not resolved spacing: 0.25mm :S. Not pictured: days spent learning the craft, the simpler board with 7 failed attempts, the 3 or 4 really simple designs in between, the first attempt ever that worked flawlessly, pants stained with lye. #DIY #electronics #chemistry
