Looking for work! Data scientist who likes to extend the life of technology. #tech, #politics, #furry. The best time to own a computer was 2005. Let's create the electronics renaissance.
It seems that every major programming language has a "hundred-liner gap". What does that mean?
- If you need a <5 line piece of code, it's either built in to a native library or easy enough to copy from StackOverflow.
- If you need a 4000 line library to manage web requests or encryption, there's a package for that.
- If you need 100 lines of code that handle the edge cases and safety checks for the 5 line code, you are SOL.
I have had this problem for years with Python and Shutil.move. The "market" for 100 line code is served by the 5 liners, obscuring the rare edge cases where everything goes wrong.
TIL Sandisk is again independent after being spun off from Western Digital.
Seagate, Sandisk, and WD are now sorta kinda equal in market cap - differing only by 10s of billions of dollars.
Here's the boom-within-a-boom of the storage market.
@Aissen@social.treehouse.systems Sorry @monkeyninja@10base2.dev, Aissen is correct. There is almost no situation where it makes sense for a regular consumer to buy a "dumb display". You can just leave your TV offline and you won't have any problems with it.
Why buy a traditional "smart" TV?
- It's subsidized. Vizio makes more money from ads than they do TVs. Buying a TV and keeping it offline lets you free ride on this.
- Probably 10x or 100x smart TVs vs. dumb TVs are made per year. Economies of scale drives the per-unit cost down.
- Commercial TVs have very different use cases than home TVs. Commercial displays are meant to look good or okay in a brightly lit retail environment. Home TVs are at their best in a dark or dim room (while still looking fine in sunlight). A commercial TV has to look "good enough" for someone to buy the product, or go to hall B at the convention center. A home TV is supposed to wow the audience, who is actively looking at it.
- More traditional port setup and interface.
I ran an LG OLED offline for 6 years. You may want to update it every year or two (using offline firmware and USB) to perhaps improve performance - or it might make it slower. My LG is admittedly faster on local files after an update.
PSA: TVs can get slower when online. A family member bought a bargain-bin Phillips Google TV in 2020. When connected to the Internet, the entire interface, even changing channels, slows to a crawl. But if you factory reset it and keep it offline, it's pretty snappy.
A fascinating tour of CD and CD-R technology, as it pertains to burning PlayStation 1 game backups. #retrocomputing #retrogaming
#Drag is a wholesome family activity. Women (presumably cis) in revealing outfits performed in front of family crowds in the good old days circa 1940-1966 at the Tennessee State Fair. Humans have been dressing up and dressing down since before recorded #history.

The best parts of Xanadu (1980) are some of the best sequences ever filmed.
Experience the pure joy of Xanadu and Electric Light Orchestra:

Sidenote: the worst scenes of Xanadu are unwatchably atrocious.
Doctorow is never bad, but he's really cooking in the first half.

Are you sitting down? This is a big one.
They made a gritty reboot of... are you ready? *The Wizard of Oz*. There's more lurking under the surface than the 1939 movie would have you believe.

TIL you can submit CVEs for anything. CVE for "Online Catering Ordering System in PHP with Source Code ... for educational purposes only"
Due to high numbers of CVE submissions, NIST is no longer reviewing all CVEs.
Before Rejewski started work on the Enigma, the French had a spy, Hans-Thilo Schmidt, who worked at Germany's Cipher Office in Berlin and had access to some Enigma documents. Even with the help of those documents, the French did not make progress on breaking the Enigma.
I need to set up an open NAS share on my network. All my distro hopping gets annoying when I want to save some files before wiping.
who knows how real this is, but "gay teens" have supposedly picked up Penny Arcade, and one anonymous person claims to have read 27 years of the 3x a week comic strip in 2 weeks.
TIL VeggieTales is basically just an OVA. It aired on TV a decade after debut. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VeggieTales_videos
@huntingdon@mstdn.social TVs shouldn't even come with speakers outside of a small percentage designed to be ultraconvenient and small (say, a <= 32 inch dorm room TV). Built-in TV speakers suck and you can go all the way back to the 1980s to find good speakers that still work. My daily driver PC speakers are from 1988.
In many cities in the USA, you can get decent speakers and an amplifier that powers them on Facebook for $80. Less if you negotiate, wait for deals, or check thrift stores. I say they're "basically free" but that's the long version of that saying.
For example:
- two speaker pairs in the trash
- one decent, one iffy pair for $20 at a yard sale
- tons of speakers at the thrift store and thrift outlet store ("bins"), all under $30
- mono bluetooth+aux speaker on eBay for $35
hey, me and the buddies were wondering if you wanted to wear these translucent goggles. all they do is filter light. there's no screen. if there was a screen blocking our entire vision it couldn't hypnotize us. and even if it could, none of us would be turned on. you in?

#Linux distros for normal people, 2026 edition.
i want a chromebook, but linux. I dont want to look under the hood ever. nixbook
I want it to work and not think too much about it. i use a couple of popular/basic apps like chrome, a word processor, maybe steam. ubuntu or mint cinnamon. (honorable mention: fedora)
I want a little more handholding at the cost of making it harder to deviate from the list of ~200 apps I can install. bazzite.
I want it to run faster. some jank is okay. MX linux Xfce (looks a bit 1990s, built on debian). (good for pre-2015 PCs)
I don't care if it breaks. it should be cool and fast. cachy. (LxQt if you want SPEED.)
source: used all of these
Logical Volume Manager (LVM) is weirdly hard to manage and browse on Linux. It's only a few commands to find and mount each partition, but Proxmox automatically creates like 5 right off the bat, plus one per VM (?). Most disk tools, even Linux ones, won't let you peek inside. It's just a big blob of LVM.
