A couple of thoughts on Ann Widdecombe:
-
Murdering people is wrong. If she was murdered, then I do not condone that in any way, and I hope that they get whoever did it and lock them up for a long time.
-
I don't get this "you must not speak ill of the dead" thing. The dead should be remembered for who they were, not who we would have liked them to be. Widdecombe was a nasty piece of work. She was anti-abortion, pro-death penalty, anti-LGBT rights, and, as prisons minister, directly responsible for the policy of shackling pregnant prisoners. Just because she was kind to animals doesn't mean she should be remembered with fondness.
Gotta admit, when I first saw this sign online I did wonder if it had been photoshopped. But this evening I saw it with my own eyes and I can confirm that it is real.
I see the BBC are deploying significant investigative resources to make sure they remind us plebs that the real threat to us all comes from poor brown people on small boats.
Perish the thought that they should deploy those resources on investigating rich white people defrauding the taxpayer or buying influence over government.
It would never do to let the plebs know what the real threat is, would it?
If any Labour MPs think the solution to their problems is to replace #Starmer with #Streeting, they need their head examined.
No doubt there are many reasons for Labour's unpopularity, but surely one big one is that they promised change from the Tories and have basically just carried on Torying.
Why would you want to replace Starmer with one of the few Labour MPs who's even more right wing than he is?
I don't think any of us really knows at this stage how good a job Andy Burnham is going to do as PM, assuming he gets the job (as seems overwhelmingly likely).
I for one am certainly keeping an open mind for now.
I'm sure there are many criteria on which he can be judged, but one criterion I shall be using is this:
If the right-wing media publish endless vitriolic articles saying how terrible he is (probably accusing him of being antisemitic, that's usually how it works), then I shall assume he must be doing something right.
Good morning everyone! The sun is shining, and it is not oppressively hot. This is a good start to the week.
How's the weather where you are?
- I have solar panels on my roof and I'm signed up for an export tariff with Octopus Energy so that they credit my account for the electricity I send back to them.
Except that they don't.
For 4 months in a row now, they have "forgotten" to add the export credit to my bills.
Got in touch with them after the first 2 months, they apologised and sent a new bill with the export on it, but they're still not adding the export to my bill automatically.
Formal complaint made now.

OK, here's a #TechieQuestion: if I want to sync directories from a Linux server using a Python script, does it make much difference whether I invoke a shell command with rsync from the Python script or use a dedicated Python sync command such as pyrsync?
(Boosts welcome if this isn't your area of expertise)
- I have an ISA with a bank that generally pays quite competitive rates of interest. My ISA was competitive when I opened it, but that was in 2022, and it's gradually degraded since then. I was able to increase the interest I'm getting paid by about 60% by switching it to a new account with the same bank, which was easy enough, but I had to be alert enough to what was going on to do that. The bank would have very happily kept paying me lower and lower rates of interest if I hadn't acted

If I were #Starmer, and if I were confident that I had acted properly and not misled Parliament, then I would absolutely welcome an inquiry by the Privileges Committee so that I could clear my name.
The way he is so strongly fighting against this inquiry being allowed to happen tells you everything you need to know.
