I am really into Open Source, coding, tech, politics, philosophy, literature, music, and just have way too many hobbies.

Building sovereign infrastructure for the decentralized web.

NorthTube's storage is now on Storm Buckets, fully Canadian-hosted -- here's a tutorial on the s3 storage platform I've been creating, using #Garage under the hood! I have two commits merged upstream, excitedly waiting for 2.4.0!
I'm still building & dogfooding the platform, but if anyone wants alpha access let me know!
As for age verification, I agree with @chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca that even if we wanted to do it, we just do not have the resources.
If we were ordered to "Do it or shut down" then our only choice would be to shut down, which gives more power to big-tech and enables their abuses even further, with more data on their users!
Another bill we should just kill, in my opinion.
I just switched here, after creating the instance! Time for a re-introduction.
I believe in:
🍁 Canadian digital sovereignty
🌐 Building the gardens, not the walls
🪨 Imagining Sisyphus happy (even when the boulder has ML capabilities)
I also host the https://northtube.ca platform!
If you're interested in #Django, #Fediverse infrastructure, #Philosophy, #Absurdism, or just #Canadian things, let's connect.
Finished recording this tutorial, got it on Northtube!
#PeerTube is literally the reason I started working on my own s3 platform, so it's the first real app-specific tutorial - was built to solve my problem, so hopefully it can solve others!

More to come. Storm Buckets is in alpha, but feel free to sign up for a free 100gb grant! Honestly looking for more Alpha users to provide feedback, so you'd be helping me out as well
Try out my game:
https://smattymatty.itch.io/archimedes-survivor
A fast-paced survivor roguelite - start off simple, scales to absurd chaos!
My friend and I have been making the 'Archimedes' game engine from scratch for some time - an 'off-and-on' type of project - and this is the official tech demo!
If you like survivors-like games, you'll probably enjoy this. But be warned: It's quite tough!
Can you get past 3 minutes? Most can't.

I'm not sure if we are talking about the same bill, but c-22 that designates "electronic service providers"; fediverse admins fall into that, even someone who hosts nextcloud for their family falls into that -- the government can order you to betray your users/family/friends - and legally bar you from talking about it.
If passed as written, it's pretty damning for the 'digital sovereignty' movement. I think a lot of our time should be spent against it.
Participated in the first ever MOOP Open Source Game Jam - Two weeks to create a game with the theme 'Open', using Open source tools:
https://smattymatty.itch.io/open-door-dungeon
We created a roguelike dungeon crawler all about opening doors ;) a proof-of-concept of our C->WebAssembly Pipeline with our Archimedes + Daedalus toolchain

@Jakester@socialontario.ca was my team-mate who made the map editor and some art
I've been following #garage for a few months, and finally I got around to opening up my own self-hosted garage cluster - for now it just holds my obsidian notes, but I have a ton of ideas for what I want to use this for!
I'm super happy with how easy Garage is to set up and use. I'm excited to delve deeper into it, write more about it, and transition NorthTube and SocialOntario to it once I can ensure it's fully stable!
Blog post: https://mathewstorm.ca/tech/self-host-journey/garage-1/
okay guys you can calm down, the OPTIONS preflight CORS handling on local-aliased buckets in Garage is fixed
Jokes aside, I am proud to announce my pr got merged into Garage!
I'm always super nervous when making a PR for open source projects, a mix of imposter syndrome and catastrophizing -- so I'm really happy it was accepted so quickly :) especially since it was legitimately blocking me in production
Haven't been too active, and have been letting things get out of touch -- I apologize -- got hit with the good ol' depression bug. The same stuff that I was super excited about ~ a month ago, I just haven't had any energy for, lately. Just been working, sleeping, and trying my best to take care of myself. Sorry guys, but I'll be back soon.

hey man dont let the HOA people get to ya, we love you here
Hmm, my first thought is that moderation is community-based on a per-instance basis, so they can have a much easier time moderating out bad actors (entire bad instances) - and regional instances like yours for NWT can ensure they're more likely to reach their actual constituents rather than faraway trolls
you can mention rule 1 of https://joinmastodon.org/covenant that would wipe out many types of bad actors from any respected instance
I'll read the article and try to formulate more thoughts
@votetanille@socialbc.ca said #Mastodon during the #NDP Debate!

It came last after FB, tho. Small victories.
Got around to uploading my 2nd class on #Django web dev fundamentals --

Recorded this a while ago, but I'm transferring all my old YouTube content -> PeerTube - Slowly but Surely
I found this out in the wild while researching similar sites for my client -- 'As Recommended by ChatGPT and Google Gemini' -- WHAT?!
That's like putting 'As recommended by my Ouija board and my Vacuum Cleaner' as a review for your business O__O
Oh dear.
'As recommended by the homeless man down the street who yells in riddles'
'As recommended by my parrot that I taught to swear'
I'm having too much fun with this.

All good, I don't blame you, bills in this country are so vaguely named and hard to follow.
Both bills deserve scrutiny though so I appreciate you bringing it up.
