I got to play with a Symbolics machine exactly once. It had Zmacs, and I managed to crash the machine. Oops. But it was a treat to try a whole different system.

When subversion came out, everyone switched from cvs because you could rename files without losing all the files' history, and branches were cheap. We branched all the time. Do a release? Make a branch. But we never ever merged. I tried to merge once in a "feature branch"-like pattern. It was a bookkeeping nightmare. You all don't know how good you have it with #git despite git being a UX disaster in its own right. Just manually track your revisions.
