@MaddieM4@raphus.social @datarama@hachyderm.io @kde@floss.social I hear you. But I'm pretty optimistic that getting off these projects is less painful than you imagine, it's classic human risk aversion.
By total coincidence I move my desktop to XFCE and I'm rather enjoying baloo not taking up all my CPUs.
RE: @emilymbender@dair-community.social
PBS knocked this one out of the park, highly recommend!
Cool perf hack: when someone says "for better or worse", the "better or" can be optimized away.

Pro tip: if you ever want to evaluate a language don't look at the main code look at the test suite because that's where no one cares, has nothing to prove and just wants to get it done.
Not as strong a stance as I would like, concerned with slippery-sloping, but reasonable in the current environment. #emacs
the key difference is calculators and Google Maps work
I'm in the beginning stages of learning several new unfamiliar languages for the first time in a while and without a doubt the hardest part is *still* constantly having to stop what you're doing and go look something up to get the simplest thing done.
When the dust settles the only software left standing will be #emacs
Yet Another Toxic Effect of mandatory llm workflows is even when you have juniors they learn nothing.
If the slop came from a junior's brain it means they grappled with the problem and took a huge step forward in learning.
You work with that person to cut it down to something small and clean, the next time around they get better, everyone's a winner.
Now, zippo, nothing. Praise doesn't make sense and review is a farce.
Forward deployed sounds like the infantry unit you sacrifice to waste the enemy's ammo.
There's still this long running myth that Haskell is slow to compile because of fancy types.
Haskell _is_ slow to compile but that's because it generates gigabytes of IR.
Don't believe me? Monitor your tmp folder during a compile cycle.
Still don't believe me? Have GHC do a dry run.
This has unfortunately lead to a ton of languages that proclaim fast compile times because of "simple" types which is at best a correlation when the real lesson is to keep generated code as tight as possible.
Unit test that only fails when Github is down, Happy Monday!
This is some alt-timeline stuff, SML was (is) more like Lisp images than I realized.
You can check point intermediate states of a compilation into a file and even have states that depend on other states for an n-ary dependency tree of cached IR that can be loaded into an app.

Omarchy is trying to rewrite itself as a Nix distro. Man, what a stupid time for maintainers.
https://freenode.net/article/nixos-community-splits-over-omarchy-and-dhh
This is trivially true to the point of being insulting, when you take on a dependency you are stuck with the people and culture for the life of your project.
Doesn't seem worth saying but then people get all surprised when it happens to them.

@cR0w@infosec.exchange Every place I've worked there have always been really good people at the dev level.
I have never seen a bug-ridden feature or downtime due to the incompetence of any one dev, or even a team. Most of the time we were saddled with error prone technology and those in charge ignored the warnings.
Life hack: adapt your circadian rhythms to CI times.
Calling it, Lisp is the durian fruit of PLs.
I like how we traded Ask Jeeves for Ask Bertie.

I'll say this again, for devs looking for another career, licenced dev-specific therapist is as close to a sure thing as you can get.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca @baldur@toot.cafe Assuming you are talking about programmers, dev work has always been thankless, if you get no thanks you're doing great. That along with a high frustration tolerance has always been a part of the mental resilience required to do the job.
As an act of self care I refuse to read past the headline and instead daydream about a way cooler timeline where Chinese fashion models are on a murderous rampage.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange At the moment it seems like "Can you break this up into reviewable commits?" a good social hack against slop PRs.
Devs are getting a taste of what it's been like for customer support and QA test teams for decades and the hand wringing is kind of hilarious ...
You may remember testers and support folk as the only people at the company who knew how your software actually worked.

@joe@f.duriansoftware.com Fair enough but from my own experimentation I've found that avoiding certain type system features does not result in a significantly faster compile cycle.
Except type families, it's night and day.
On the downside RIP Fender, on the upside this will be a fun ass whoopin'.

How have I never heard of Sukiyaki Western Django?!
If youre looking for an offbeat Western this is totally your jam.
Lots of anti ai articles nowadays talking about how we are forgetting how to code like Romans losing their recipe for setting concrete underwater or something ...
But, like, we never knew?
This is a painful but golden opportunity for a complete reset.

@cwebber@social.coop I predict those who remain will work 80hr weeks out of fear. Things will keep chugging at a modest pace and the credit will go to ai.

@lojikil@mastodon.social But is it useful to separate the two?
As an example from my own experiences with typed langs, on the one hand, yes, they do eliminate errors in a robust way in some cases, but on the other they're a royal PITA so people just go with Python and I can't blame them.
Mackenzie Bezos is conducting this experiment now.

I've been on the main branch of Tcl/Tk I can confirm that the GUI and language situation is extremely good.
The announcement buries the lede but the Zipfs_Apphook is a gamechanger, I can use to package any app into single executable cross platform AppImage like thing (works great on Windows!).
Any app, it could be Java, JS whatever, just bundle everything (JRE, shared libs, static assets, whatever) into a Zip image & from the user POV it's just a single executable.

@jn@c.im I got there with reverse image search but I'm lost on how it relates to maps and calculators. Sorry.
