Sharing this repo to demonstrate something I consider to be truly incredible in modern Swift with Approachable Concurrency.
Your View Models no longer *need* to be MainActor-isolated just because your SwiftUI View* reads or mutates a property on it. Your View Model tests can be totally nonisolated, and not have to mark them @.MainActor + experience MainActor-contention.

Thank you @mattiem@mastodon.social for showing me this is possible!

RE: @pointfreeco@hachyderm.io

So, so excited to be digging into these betas tomorrow!
@pointfreeco@hachyderm.io is one of the best investments you can make in your ongoing career as an iOS engineer, and I’m so excited to see both TCA 2, and to dig into DebugSnapshots for exhaustive testing for reference types!

I had a sneaking suspicion that the single, collapsed async trick might be an (isolated Self) parameter in this week's @pointfreeco@hachyderm.io episode, having used it in my Unimplemented mock-generating macro. Felt good seeing it confirmed!
It’s an unbelievably useful trick – and it gives you synchronous access to the actor's state for the duration of the closure (with just the `await` to run the method)

Like Apple got rid of the full-screen-covering volume toggle, can it please get rid of the full-screen MagSafe/charging indicator when you dock your phone? Please? 🥺

@matthew @mattiem

Sadly, I don’t see an overwhelming appetite for learning, as many people are happy to ship code if the pipeline is green.

This has always been a problem, but definitely even more of a problem nowadays 🙁 Why bother learning when you can just chuck Claude at it? Let's ignore the fact that if you don't learn, regardless of everything else, you automate yourself out of a job…

@matthew @mattiem @akbashev If anything, I think scale and the simplicity of *not* having to worry about MainActor-isolation, speeding up your tests, etc. by actually being able to run in parallel, fewer overall constraints on your types – I think that's a factor in favour of using this pattern (in a year or two once Approachable Concurrency has been fully baked, these patterns detailed a lot more, etc.)

@mattiem @matthew @akbashev …for everyone, where a method is running, async or not. Approachable Concurrency making async methods behave the same way Task has is a good start, and hopefully the @.concurrent keyword will reduce the proliferation of inappropriate Task.detached usage you see throughout codebases, often with a git blame that dates back a few years 😃

@mortenbekditlevsen @mattiem Hi Morten! I believe it’s because of the changes in Approachable Concurrency which flip how isolation works with async functions in Swift. Prior to Approachable Concurrency, all async functions ran on the global executor unless explicitly isolated. Approachable Concurrency flips that so async functions are isolated to the caller by default, which in this case would be the MainActor.

Oh, and the token cost multiplier for some models – especially Anthropic's models – have gone through the roof Opus 4.6 has gone from a 3x multiplier to 27x multiplier lmao https://docs.github.com/en/copilot/reference/copilot-billing/models-and-pricing#model-multipliers-for-annual-copilot-pro-and-copilot-pro-subscribers

Holy shit, Control just got released on iPhone and iPad, cross purchase on the Mac App Store. It's also only £5 at the moment. A ridiculously good deal!

My biggest concern is that many companies have focused in on using AI purely to pump out more features, more code, more PRs, fewer human-driven reviews, less human accountability for what makes it into a product. That is a truly poisonous use of this genuinely useful technology (useful when wielded correctly). Is it perfect, no. But is any tool perfect? Companies have felt pushed to build harnesses, workflows, everything around LLMs - often in places where existing, normal scripts/apps would do!

Part three - yesterday, Anthropic ran a fake door test on new signups, showing Claude Code as unavailable on the Pro plan, indicating that it would only be available on Max ($100 a month) plans and above. You could argue this is also growth hacking and not *just* about removing access for Pro subscribers. No Pro subscriber lost access to Claude Code, but it showed the appetite to raise that bar was there, to start not-so-gently sliding the rug. https://x.com/GergelyOrosz/status/2046782134166114482

@mattiem @akbashev Just to demo, any actor-isolation is enough to get this compiling and in passing order again:

@akbashev @mattiem I guess it does mean your ViewModel is running on different isolation domains in prod and in testing, but that might be totally OK and allow you to run tests in parallel that otherwise would be contending for access to the MainActor. Now they can truly run in parallel with no dependency on the MainActor at all.

@mergesort Given I believe, most of the time, that we’re not too far off the inevitable rugpull for genAI tooling, I’m trying to extract as much value out as I can right now. Not just building new features (in fact, I don’t do that all too much!) but helping with refactoring, finishing migrations, etc. and extracting long-term plans based on codebase analysis.

@nicklockwood Software has been buggier and more unreliable since features features features, no time to look back came in. I think a lot of places do agile very, very badly (in the long term) and businesses reward based on moving metrics, not fixing the millions of papercuts.

@joe @snazzyq Sure, but absolutely nobody is going to be buying this Mac for coding purposes! I don’t disagree that it probably should be 12GB RAM and already on the A19 Pro, but still. This is for the people who wouldn’t have ever entertained the idea of a Mac because of pricing before.

@ZevEisenberg@mastodon.social @mattiem@mastodon.social This is awesome! I wish more Swift error messaging was so descriptive. One of the things I’ve loved when I’ve dabbled with Rust is how comprehensive some of the error messages are, and there’s nothing stopping Swift having the same.

I hope open-source local models keep evolving, keep shrinking to run on less RAM (we don't all have 512GB Mac Studios!), and that they catch up just enough before the rug pull happens in earnest. I also hope tech companies take literally any kind of note of the way the wind is blowing and start internally re-planning AI strategies, re-investigate the "what if it goes away/costs go up 10/100x", and start planning to extract as much value as possible now, while they still can, on the cheap.

@Setok@attractive.space @tuomas_h@mastodon.social @stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social I’m not saying it would especially be a good thing, but I think Apple would be fairly likely to do it as a convertible device anyway. I can’t pretend that I don’t occasionally reach out to touch my iPad screen when in the Magic Keyboard 😅

That rug pull felt inevitable – and I think we're truly at the start of it. People have been complaining over the last couple of weeks (correctly, IMO) that Claude's top tier Opus models have felt stupider, taking much longer to respond. Anthropic added an effort slider to make maximum "thinking" not a default too, decreasing average request resource usage. Opus 4.7 hasn't felt like any kind of meaningful update, and requests just take longer to get back to you.

@boffbowsh@mastodon.me.uk I just want a little Dynamic Island toast! Or something from the battery indicator! Every morning, I drop my phone on my Qi2 charger, and it does the full screen animation, right as I go to tap on one of my widgets - which doesn’t work, or course, because the animation is happening by the time I tap.

But even more than that, I feel like many companies are missing the boat. There is an increasingly shrinking window in which your tech debt is now *incredibly* cheap to pay down. Long-standing bugs that cost too much can be resolved by even a half-decent LLM, for like $5 of tokens. Bugs that either have too few hits to be worth addressing, are too long standing, have no internal ownership, etc. All prime targets for at *least* investigation and planning. And yet... I don't think it's happening.
