@brett@bitflipp.social The last time I found myself unemployed, I was trying everything I could to get into the 1000-lb gorilla in the local job market. I used connections in the company to get lined up with job postings that were aligned with my skills, get recommended by current employees, and talk directly with hiring managers. I was told over and over again that your website doesn't matter, your blog doesn't matter, but your LinkedIn profile 100% matters. That experience is the reason why I log in to it.

@mcc@mastodon.social I spent 3 months unemployed last year and I spent 40 hours per week at my local library studying, building, and marketing myself. I came out the other end with a new found respect for your local library and immediately signed up for the friends of the library organization.

@rl_dane If your goal is just to make sure nobody is using your identity to sign up for a credit account, I would freeze your credit reports with Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. If you need to buy a car or sign up for a credit card, you can do a 48hr thaw, go ahead and do it, and let it refreeze. It's free to do, and the way I heard it put, if you can't sign up for new credit because of the freeze, somebody pretending to be you can't either.

@cmccullough I pay $29/yr for a "shared hosting" plan that allows 50gb of storage and unlimited websites. It's isn't a B Corp, it isn't based in Switzerland, and it doesn't advertise five 9s but it's cheap and it gets the job done. If you are looking to your to host your node, php, or python project, you could do worse. That's where a few of my WordPress sites are hosted.

@snazzyq I spent a week writing code on an m1 with 8gb of memory while the IT department at work was working on my workstation. That cemented in my mind, how irresponsible selling a mac with 8gb of memory really is.

@arclight@oldbytes.space I remember being asked to migrate an inventory management system for a large international corporation, early in my career. One of the big goals was to move the web app from using Microsoft Access to using Oracle RDBMS. I did a little bit of digging and realized that Access was being used as the intermediary between the web app and an Excel spreadsheet. Excel can do a lot ... just because it can do a lot doesn't mean that it should do a lot, though. 😏

@jkirkendall@wandering.shop I was watching a video earlier today, where they were saying that if you are an American citizen, you can get a Japanese library card for free through https://www.jflalc.org/libby (Canadians can use https://tr.jpf.go.jp/library/collection-and-services/) and then you can use it with Libby, too.

@davidho@mastodon.world I made the personal rule at one point of "It is big enough if I can fit a 50-pound dog in the cargo area." Having the dog in the passenger seat proved difficult. That is the reason why I ended up with an eGolf instead of a Chevy Bolt.

@vkc@linuxmom.net If your admin blocks "cesspool.domain", unless the maintainer of "cesspool.domain" forks mastodon and does some shenanigans, no user from that instance can follow any user from your instance and vice versa. They could go to your profile and take a screenshot of it or link to it if the post is public (vs "Quiet Public" or "Followers Only") but they can also do that if they aren't using Mastodon at all. Truth Social is using an old, tweaked version of Mastodon but nobody federates with it.

A few days ago, I read about PGBackRest's (https://github.com/pgbackrest/pgbackrest) maintainer giving up because he can't find the sponsors to make the project viable and now I am seeing a lot of people hate on Blender (https://fund.blender.org) for taking money from a new corporate sponsor.

@zkat If the issue is with your followers not moving over, it's likely that fedi.zkat.tech isn't federating with those users' instances. I had that issue moving from mastodon.social to toot.works. Federation takes time (a few weeks at the very least).

@tvaziri I was watching a video where they were saying that the reason why it's not called "Spider-Man Noir" is because if they used the Spiderman name, their agreements with Marvel would require them to get Marvel involved. A Spider-Man movie without Marvel's involvement does make me fear a repeat of the Madame Webb incident but I remain hopeful that they'll be able to figure it out.
