mastodon 4.7.3Hi, I'm Dave! I like art, books, writing, and programming computers.
Amazing pixel art avatar by @misnina@mastodon.gamedev.place from my old watercolor original.
Banner illustration is a watercolor drawing of a shelf of colorful books.

Doing the official Inktober list this year. Going to try to make them all fish!

Came across this little drawing from last year. Never posted until now because it was one of my daily pair of "lunch notes" that I send off with the kids' lunches to school. We were really into the local isopods last fall.

A reminder from my pocket notebook: Use your head.
"The Litterati"
Sorry for the bad pun. As soon as I thought of it, I had to draw it... and subject everyone else to it. 😂

"[This is] as good a time as any to write down these thoughts I’ve been germinating for the last decade."
(Also, I just realized my website is going to be 30 years old next year. Wow.)

I'm behind! Previous letter was 'H'. So H is for...Heck of a Hog! #ArtABCs
F is for...Finch Farmer! Join us for the #ArtABCs... where a lucky letter is chosen from the alphabet every two weeks or so until they're all gone. I have a strong suspicion 'G' might be next.
EDIT: I should probably attach the art. 🤣
G is for...grasshopper ghost! Spooky and sproingy.
Join us for #ArtABCs, the most laid-back art challenge ever. Share your art of anything starting with G!
(No AI, Yes alt text, CW as needed.)
Another thing off my plate! Now you can see what those Puffy drawings I posted earlier were for. If you like OpenBSD and/or packet filtering, you may enjoy this:
I've fully moved my website to @OpenBSDAms@mastodon.bsd.cafe at last! Very excited to make this transition to #OpenBSD and httpd(8) for web hosting.

Pagan holidays are fun.
NASA's poster for the #artemis2 mission.
I was reading about the mission this evening and learned that the SLS uses RS-25 engines like the Space Shuttle. Also, the Orion capsule is roomier than I expected.

@manifoldslug Thank you! As has happened before, the "idea" came to me when I thought I actually saw this image out in the wild, but on closer inspection, it wasn't even close to this at all! So I drew what I thought I saw. 😆

@cblgh@merveilles.town I've added your project to the "See Also" section of the page here:

Let me know if you would like anything changed or removed!

@manifoldslug What a great way to put it!
I hope you don't mind, but I've been meaning to write something about this for a while and you gave me the perfect title:

(Let me know if you want to be credited differently or not at all.)

@akkartik@merveilles.town Yeah! It's been a while since I read that. Let's see... 2009, to be specific. I've forgotten most of the details by now.

@shapr Thanks! I wish I was equipped to sell art (especially things like stickers and bookmarks!) easily. I've done it a few times. Mostly I do trades, so there's no money on the line. 😄

@manifoldslug Thank you so much. That means a lot. And back at you - hearing that makes *me* feel validated in return, and less like I'm shouting into the void. ❤️

@gumnos I hate playing pixel detective and I already regret looking into this, but here's Dave Thomas from the newsletter titled "Be a Luddite; Embrace AI":
https://sh1.sendinblue.com/3i4bourirglpfe.html
On the one hand, AI seems to be reducing people's need for books. On the other hand, if we use an AI generated image on a cover, our support folks get a bunch of "I'll never buy from you again" emails.
Glad to hear I'm at least not alone. 😂

@pikesley@mastodon.me.uk I know I shouldn't be shocked anymore, but creatures like Andreessen still find new ways to blow my mind. "Know thyself" was so important that it was inscribed in stone in Delphi 2,500 years ago. I thought these guys were super into Western Culture.

Okay, this one I'm certain about:

So long, Pragmatic Bookshelf!

@andnull@social.nouveau.community I'm 100% with you. I like to think of myself as a flexible and reasonable person, but this is one of those things that requires a hardline stance.

@gumnos Good lord. And is that SLOP on the cover? Was it too hard to take another photo of a freaking *hand* like the previous editions? If so, that is a book I will NOT be purchasing and a publisher that will never see another dime from me.
If not, I apologize for the insult, etc.
