Exploring snac2 as a lighter Fediverse alternative. I'm a longtime #BSD and #Linux user. Better on the desktop than the server but always learning.

@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online I'm in no way "invested" in Bluesky, but this stinks however you look at it.

@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social So much office work is moving away from stand-alone applications and into the browser, and that's creating opportunities for Linux. And even when a company offers what looks like an app for a PC, it's usually a browser app packaged to look like a native app. MS Office and Adobe Suite are dinosaurs. Nobody's planning new, big-$$$ apps for business that need to be installed on specific PC OSes. Even Microsoft and Adobe know the future is in the browser (and in services). We're living in a SAAS world, and that where Linux can excel. It's all in the browser. As a news editor, I use mostly web-based tools. I still run Vim for text editing, and I do use some image editors (mostly gThumb), but I do more and more photo editing with applications that live in the browser.

I have published 11 blog posts in the past week and a half on #notetaking apps and whether they can be used to streamline writing for blogs made with static site generators like #Zola and #Hugo. Does it work? Maybe posting 11 times in 10 days is a partial answer. https://zola.passthejoe.net/

When I run a VPS for my blogs, I don't set up any analytics. I have no idea what kind of traffic I'm getting. I'm only writing what I want, and what I don't know won't influence me.

How to turn on custom note names in #QOwnNotes, which I'm testing as a #ssg composition tool for my #zola blog

I'm already daily driving a 9-year-old HP laptop (I had TWO from 2017, but one recently died and gave its RAM and SSD to the other) and a 15-year-old iMac (resuscitated with Debian and surprisingly usable) and I assume this state of affairs will continue.

#Nextcloud Desktop is working perfectly as a sync client between my #Bluefin (#GNOME) Linux desktop and https://thegood.cloud.

Project #Bluefin just revved to #Fedora 44 and #GNOME 50. Now's a good time to jump into the immutable/atomic Linux pool. Bluefin is a lot more forward thinking than I am. That's one of the reasons I've stuck with it this year. Calling Bluefin #Silverblue with a whole lot of batteries included wouldn't be wrong. So many batteries -- but most are optional. @jorge@hachyderm.io wrote a bunch of blog posts on it. Start here: https://docs.projectbluefin.io/blog/bluefin-spring-2026/

I made some progress on solving my graphics issues for #Electron apps on #Flatpak in #Debian 13 with #GNOME and #Wayland on my 2011 #iMac 27-inch:

  • For Spotify, turning off GPU acceleration in Flatseal
  • For Signal, copy the contents of the .desktop file into a new .desktop file in the local directory where those go, and modify the exec line to add --disable-gpu
I'm not sure if I want to "fix" Slack because the "app" won't allow me to choose a browser with which to open links. It defaults to the system's default browser, which isn't what I use for the day job.

Note: All of these problems also go away in an X11 session, but that breaks suspend/resume on this iMac, so I'm committed to staying in Wayland.

More details when I do a post on this.
