"After the obscenities of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries on Old Earth, when military leaders had committed their nations to strategies wherein entire civilian populations were legitimate targets while their uniformed executioners sat safe in self-contained bunkers fifty meters under the earth, the repugnance of the surviving civilians was so great that for more than a century the word ‘military’ was an invitation to a lynching."

"Listen, I’m an ardent believer in restorative justice. I believe we have moral obligation to treat incarceration as the last, most reluctantly-taken resort of a just society. But the people who make zip files that barf their contents into same directory they’re in should be thrown in nerd jail forever, and should the day dawn that we come to our collective senses, realize that we can outgrow the worst habits of our past together and throw open those barred doors to put the cruelties of the carceral state behind us forever, we should let those people out last." -- https://exple.tive.org/blarg/2026/04/29/meshtaculous

We are all geopolitical actors now

Every action you make is a negotiation, and one iteration of an eternal negotiation.

If the whole world were to agree, "we will use tool X," tool X now has power over us all. At least, for God's sake, do your best not to let tool X cotton on. Keep some cards close to your chest.

"X is good" is not enough reason to use X. And it's definitely not enough reason to use _only_ X. Resilience matters.

I have this vivid memory of a month spent learning BASIC in 6th grade, and the instructor would repeatedly say "the syntax of ... is ..." And I had no idea what this word "syntax" was. I never got it, until when I went back to programming 7 years later.

With my kids I'm trying to use the word "skeleton" instead of syntax. Though calling the blanks "bones" seems like a wrong turn with hindsight.

@spiralganglion@merveilles.town @jack@berlin.social @neauoire@merveilles.town I missed the whole thing of listening to music in my teens, so I don't really have music that "speaks to me". Maybe the closest I came to that was Phil Collins, "Another day in paradise." Favorite love songs: Extreme, "More than words" John Denver, "Leaving on a jet plane" I tend to like lyrics with place names even though I've never been to the places. "Pittsburgh seems like a dream to me now." "And it's a long day, livin' in Reseda. There's a freeway runnin' through the yard."

@psf@oldbytes.space You mentioned Lua earlier as a possible candidate for distilled software: Lua 5.1: 12.7kLoC Lua 5.2: 14.6kLoC Lua 5.3: 16.6kLoC Lua 5.4: 20.0kLoC Lua 5.5: 21.3kLoC Definitely growing over time. Does this disqualify it? But compare Python: 3.13.11: 1.3MLoC 3.14.2: 1.479MLoC So Python added 150+kLoC. That's 6 Luas. And in what, a fourth or fifth of the time between Lua 5.4 and 5.5. @kirtai@tech.lgbt @millihertz@oldbytes.space

@psf@oldbytes.space Hmm, this seems like a slight difference with your original definition of the term, and I like the original better. What matters is absolute size and age, not just whether you added a few bytes or not. If the competition grew by 2x and you grew by 10%, that seems pretty great. @kirtai@tech.lgbt @millihertz@oldbytes.space

@TodePond@mas.to Oh yeah, I wrote that when I thought I was close to the end, but really I was only half way. The part I was responding to was the section "Normalise sharing scrappy fiddles". I used to interpret that as, you gotta make crappy (yes I conflated words) stuff to make good stuff. But you're saying something much more radical. All our thousand year-old instincts to augment ourselves using artifacts are failing us, now that we're drowning in artifacts. @spiralganglion@mastodon.social
