@mitchellh The more people I see exiting from GitHub, the more I hope people write guides on doing so. At the moment, the thing that's making it hard for me is GitHub Actions, which I use a lot. Also, I wish I could find an alternative to pr-release that works with Codeberg. :HoloHmmm:

@webhat@infosec.exchange @selzero@syzito.xyz I'm mostly discussing the alt text culture here, it looks more virtue signaling over actual helping people. Like, if you take the HTML specification, it says: "The most general rule to consider when writing alternative text is the following: the intent is that replacing every image with the text of its alt attribute does not change the meaning of the page." Adding an accurate description of who is talking in the video ALONE doesn't work for that. A transcript would be more useful for that. I say the visual description of who's talking is mostly irrelevant, but that's subjective.

@jwz@mastodon.social @TTimo@mastodon.social Just mute the thread. People will do that even if you say otherwise. And that's why I guess people should migrate to… Edit: jokes aside, humans are social beings, some people will be affected by this change, some will ask for help, some will try to help. Just saying you don't care for their problem will make them not care for yours too. What I recommend for next time: make a reply "Everyone wanting to help or looking for help, please reply to this message!" then mute the thread. IIRC I saw this trick (or something like this) on some subreddits.

@signalapp@mastodon.world I hope you support some kind of optional verification in Keyoxide style. E.g. "this Signal account verified they control this Mastodon account and this website", but with better wording so people don't just set up lookalike accounts and websites, but it still works to deter impersonation. The main reason I use Keyoxide is because I got impersonated in Wordpress.org blogs (which do not provide any kind of authentication). AFAIK the only way to prevent that in that platform is using PGP signed messages, which are cumbersome, or using plugins that require login, which are annoying.

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io Is it sad that TODAY the sole reason it exists is this one. It's not efficient for anti-bot protection. But back in time it was a way to crowdsource transcriptions of texts that were hard for a machine to read. I wish there were alternatives that were still focused on helping others! Lots of CPU-time is spent with POW algorithms that could be spent solving actual problems. Lots of human time is spent with CAPTCHAs that serve only to train AIs or provide a weak anti-bot protection instead of helping people. Balancing difficulty is a hard problem: original reCAPTCHA had two words, one unknown and other known, which limits how challenges can be constructed. We can't just make a "write the alt text of those two images" challenge or "select which alt texts match this image".

@gerrymcgovern Reminds me of an old client of mine that had an issue: people were calling to them asking for their competitor. Turns out that Google's AI gave their number as their competitor just because Instagram showed one of their posts next to a post of their competitor. So "intelligent".

@iFixit The reason I got my current phone is because my old phone's battery died and the replacement didn't work (the battery went puffy puffy). I'm looking for a new phone in future not due to the battery, but software updates. I could try a new ROM, but there is a lot to consider, like, one of my banks is a snowflake, if you enable developer mode it stops working (which is annoying as hell because I develop Android apps). It's pretty much government backed malware. I can leave this phone just for the bank (and just it) and get a new one for the security updates and nice things.

@webhat@infosec.exchange @selzero@syzito.xyz To be fair, this is a instance where the "alt text" seems weird. Like, does it matter if he is white or where he is? If it was a picture of him with what he said overlaid in text, should someone describe his appearance or just the text? I don't think his appearance is important at all here, that's not the important part of the message. He could be a black guy in a podcast and it would not matter at all. But then, should a transcription of the video be the alt text? Maybe, but some people might think "why?". After all, people can hear him, there are subtitles too. Maybe for the braille users?

@Yuvalne@433.world @signalapp@mastodon.world So you wouldn't want verification of public identities in Signal? Isn't that exactly the problem of people impersonating Signal? The two verifications don't exclude each other. Make it optional, not everyone has a public identity that needs to be verified, but for those who have, it's important. Also, safety numbers? No one checks them. Maybe you and tech people, but never in my life did someone check others' numbers but me. Even with those numbers people apply scams every single day working around that: "hey, I got a new number! i broke my old phone!" "ok!" then some days later "I'm broke! can you send me some money?". It happens every single day! Even with security numbers! Would an optional identify verification fix that? No. Would it improve in some cases? Yes.

@campuscodi@mastodon.social Why no one is pointing out why Google is pushing local AI on Chrome? One, so developers use it because it is the shiny new thing that will solve a lot of issues™ and blame users they are not using Chrome when this feature doesn't work in other browsers. Two, it should be local because developers should use it free of charge. The user should pay the electricity bills. It doesn't mean that this data will stay on the device: they will likely send samples of user data for training. The important part of being local is that it should be free and induce developers to use the feature. Soon they will start advertising it to developers like water "you can use AI on your website free of charge*!!!"

I'm stuck at GitHub because I use a lot of their Actions for NPM deploying. NPM made it harder to deploy from Codeberg claiming "security reasons", reducing token durations a lot and providing an alternative authentication method which isn't compatible with Codeberg, so I will have to find another distribution platform for my projects. The best option I found until now is distributing using HTTP and Grebedoc, but it has lots of drawbacks.

@Seveadon The thing is: I'm looking for low-budget options. Reason: I'm looking about this more for small churches I play sometimes (often less than 10 members actively contributing, so the DAC you showed costs more than the entire budget of most of them). But I also want one for myself: I'm building a wireless MIDI controller (MIDI over BLE, I checked latency and it's good) from a 90s keyboard that's sounding really bad so I need a reliable way to connect a laptop to the mixer. In this case it doesn't need to be too cheap, as it's a long time project, I can make a reserve or pay installments.

@beyondmachines1 While I understand the privacy issue, I wish there were good privacy aware alternatives. For Google Home, there are many that use local keyword detection and local voice recognition with Home Assistant. From what I saw, it works wonders (if you get the right hardware). But for Android? The best I found is an app that requires a persistent notification for the hot word to work. AFAIK Google crippled Android so they are the only ones that can build an app with efficient hot word detection "for security reasons". And no custom ROMs seem to have fixed that or developed alternatives ( including @GrapheneOS ... YET ).

I checked a torrent I uploaded in Nyaa years ago: it has more seeders than the original translation I based on.

Sure, I improved upon the original translation in some ways, but I have to consider something really important:

Maybe the first time people are watching this anime is no longer the old subjectively bad translation, but the one I made.

Not that I think "wow, I made history", it's a terrible anime, I just fixed typesetting, added a second language track, added some fansubber jokes and made it work more like the original DVD rather than a butchered rip from someone with little ripping knowledge.

But I still like that it might be the case.
