what's the career path for someone who went into tech because it was a thing they've always enjoyed and now it paid the bills too - but now they don't enjoy it anymore? is it still to open a bar to serve a clientele of other burned out tech workers? asking for a friend

I'm not saying everyone has to have an osdev phase. It's fine to not do it, you gotta have a particular strain of brain worms for it, and it doesn't automatically make you a good coder/person if you do. But way to miss the whole point of the exercise to just get something to generate that code for you. There's nothing cool about this, you just wasted electricity to make a dead end useless project that impresses no-one but your own ego. It's a microwave meal, you gonna serve that to others?

Don't forget to thank that one person who has been tirelessly maintaining a production Gentoo kernel in your infrastructure with most features disabled for nearly a decade.

thank mr @implr@social.hackerspace.pl!

  1. The authors say they have other chains (including ones that allow container escapes). I believe them.
  2. A mildly de-minified PoC for Alpine with a new payload ELF is at hackerspace[pl]/~q3k/alpine.py . You'll need /bin/ping from iputils. Tested on an ancient Alpine ISO from my cringe^Wdownloads directory.

Here's what I've been fighting FreeCAD over with today. It's a spin coater for @fafo@social.fa-fo.de, based on the Maasi project. I've redrawn it in FCAD instead of F360 with some FFM DFM fixes, built in hackability (M3/4 screws mounts), a latching lid, better splash protection around the vase, vent holes and maybe vacuum mount support via a hollow shaft motor.

It's still an early draft, but it's ready for some test fit prints. Also on the way is some PP/CF filament for solvent compatibility.

Oh yeah the above will turn your /bin/ping into a setuid(0) su until you drop caches (maybe) or reboot. So, uh, keep that in mind.

don't need no linux kernel LPEs when you can just alias sudo=sudo-but-also-do-something-funny-as-root into a .bashrc and wait up to 24 hours on any linux dev machine

@bas @fafo Three vacuum coating systems, three roughing pumps, one tiny diffusion pump, a wire bonder, a wafer prober, a mask aligner, a quartz tube furnace, and 20 or so eurocrates of assorted vacuum parts, lithography supplies, silicon wafers, masks, ... It's a big one, folks. Expect updates soon. We got lots of work to do now.

@implr @wolf480pl You can just write to any running process' .text if you have access to the binary. You should just be able to write a better implementation of close() into /lib/libc.so.6 - one that also drops you a +s, no questions asked su in /tmp before actually closing the file, and wait until a privileged process bites.
