Watched Clifford Stoll's Defcon talk last night; he's wonderfully insane and animated enough to probably cause the camera operator nightmares.
I read his original book on this back when it came out around 89/90, just as I was learning Unix

Got one of my Sun3's open - no life yet - but they don't look too bad; look at that BBC Engineering sticker; and they're neighbouring serial numbers on the machines - these are siblings! Few fun board bodges. #retrocomputing #suntember

Got myself a selection of small resistors for making dummy load for a PSU, and a few more random ones - don't see the silver band much!
(I've got to say Rapid electronics in the UK was - ordered just before 4pm yesterday, delivered before 2pm today on standard delivery).

@TimWardCam@c.im Oh sure; but i guess the question is whether they're pushing their team to ask the right questions and to ask if the organisation of NATS as a whole is correct to make sure it happens.

a race condition: Preliminary NATS report on the outage that took out UK air traffic control for a few hours - they had a race condition of some type where a higher priority task triggering during a normal squawk code allocation caused a corruption and it gently fell to bits over a few hours. Full report ~month or so; prelim report: https://www.nats.aero/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/NATS-Preliminary-Investigation-Report-into-NAS-Incident-on-08-Sept-2026-Issued-16-Sept-2026.pdf

@yrabbit@mastodon.sdf.org My understanding is it's mostly irrelevant, but there is a mux needed to route some stuff (the usb2?) in the right direction so it needs to know the orientation - I don't think there's a software reason to know it? (and I have heard of miswired devices where the orientation does make a difference when they forgot to wire one copy of the usb2 wires I think). Now the fun idea is libpam-usb-direction to only allow you to login if you plugged your key in the right way up :-)

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca Sure; we're still figuring that out; and there's a big continuum, of what people feel happy with doing with it. But the way to figure it out is for people to share experiences of what works and especially where it breaks unexpectedly.

@globalc@chaos.social md5sum of /dev/urandom may be asking for a lot of entropy from virt-rng?? I can't think what else it would be doing in qemu - easy enough to find with 'perf' on the host. 'perf kvm' may also be of use; you can trace events in the guest - although I don't think anything more useful. To pass a USB device, I'd use virt-manager to set up the USB passing; easiest way used to be spice but that's possibly gone, but there are other mechanisms; or you could pass serial.

@globalc@chaos.social IMHO the best solution is a differential case - measure the power without the process, then measure with it.

I love that there's a Linux /sys file where you can tell which way up your USB-C connector is. Anyone know of anything that displays all that type of thing? Connector, USB mode, power delivery, etc etc?

@globalc@chaos.social Hmm, then you're somehow going to have to work out how to measure the power to put into your emulated device. I think the opposite might be easier; using 'perf kvm' or 'perf' on the host you should be able to get event information from the guest kernel about when the scheduler does stuff. Or even something simpler; like taking the output of a 'top' like thing in the guest to the host; then you're telling the host that a particular guest prog is using 23% of CPU.

@globalc@chaos.social Oh, I thought you were trying to pass your power monitor thing through; if you want something in the guest that looks like a serial almost, but connects to something on the host, then try the 'add serial' or 'add channel' - those both give you options of what to connect to, e.g. a host pty or host unix socket; then you can run whatever you like on those.

@globalc@chaos.social Passing USB device throguh, rather than serial specific should be easy; method 1) In virtmanager hit Add Hardware, select 'USB Host device' and select your USB serial converter. That's it! 2) Use the virt-manager 'Virtual Machine->Redirect USB device' option. (I could swear there's a 3rd option somewhere!) For both make sure the VM already has an emulated USB.
