@adarsh@ruby.social @jsatk@sfba.social one thing often brought up in this context is moderation. A server comes with a moderation team. They deal with spam from other servers, federation with other servers, and, of course, enforce server rules. It’s not a deciding factor for me because I run my own instance and I’m always in agreement with my moderation team, who is me. But it might be important, especially for people who might be a target of online harassment.

@wwahammy@social.treehouse.systems at this point I’m convinced that 4 freedoms directly contributed to the problem. FLOSS gives a great boost to all the extractive tendencies and while big tech becomes more and more evil FLOSS has no mechanism to withdraw from all the awful use of it. 4 freedoms are indiscriminate so whatever FLOSS produces it will inevitably be co-opted by the evil of the day. We have to stop giving our work to causes we do not agree with. This means some sort of discrimination. You oppose AI? You probably don’t want your work to be used for building more AI. You want to contribute to fixing climate crisis? You probably don’t want your work to be used by fossil fuel companies. Don’t like war? Probably don’t want your software in murder bots. And so on. FLOSS actively works against your moral imperative. FLOSS came at a time when software availability was becoming a problem. It won, it solved that issue. Now we have different problems that require different solutions.

@skillstopractice@mastodon.social I don't agree that tailscale or anything like it meaningfully changes the nature of networks. Network still adds latency, still drops packets, still requires additional infrastructure. Delivery is about the only thing network improves. Everything else it makes worse. There are features that can not be implemented without network (e.g. collaborative editing, document sharing, state sync between machines) but even there it's a necessary evil, not an improvement. As an exercise you can take basically any spreadsheet software (Excel, Apple Numbers, LibreOffice Calc, or pretty much any other, including ancient TUI spreadsheets) and compare experience to Google Sheets.

@mackuba@martianbase.net I’ve got a security issue report on one of my FOSS projects. I don’t know if it was Mythos but it looked AI-generated. It was pretty mild though. I suspect many projects got some reports. But it doesn’t mean they all got gixed.

@skillstopractice@mastodon.social the answer to why is that most people are not nerds like us, they don’t have server or even friend with a server. They don’t even want to own a server. Then there’s a wholly separate argument that network makes things much more complicated than that ought to be. Most software would be much better staying away from network as much as possible.

Maybe they want the patent not to implement it but to license it to Sony who’s trying to ruing PS. So a small passive income on competitor’s downfall.

@hannorein@mastodon.social AI in its current form will not kill us all at once but like in this example it can kill you, and then someone else, and someone else. It still can kill a lot of people. And in doing so it will make it “normal” and when the next iteration will arrive it might be much more efficient in killing people.

@zwol@masto.hackers.town It probably is heat. I'd try IPA somewhere on the inside of the caps to see if it helps. Put some on with a swab, do not rub, let it evaporate, see if it changes texture. Depending on what plastic it is it may melt it a bit, make it flow just for a bit to level, and that would make it smooth. That's also why you don't want to rub it, you’ll mess it up. If you feel particularly adventurous and IPA didn't work you can try a more aggressive solvent like acetone, MEK, or xylol. Or you can just sand them. 5000 grit for shiny, 2000 for matt. Sandpaper available in any hardware store. You can also use nail buffers.

@jardo@townwizard.net Yeah… How about tax to income ratio as vote multiplier? You’re a billionaire but paid $1m in taxes, you get 0.001 vote. You're a normie paying 40% taxes, you get 0.4 votes. You’re out of job but tax office is still onto you you get infinite votes, but to not break the counting let's cap it at, say, 100.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca @wingo@mastodon.social git merge docs don't even explicitly define what "theirs” and “ours” mean. It sort of implied that “ours” is current brunch and “theirs” is what's being merged. And it kind makes sense but also it doesn't say what is being merged where when you're presented with a merge conflict.

There’s no lack of examples where he went on a rant because he didn't like someone's patch. I’m stoking on popcorn looking ford to his review queue getting clogged with 10kloc patches. All perfectly good C, too.

@wwahammy@social.treehouse.systems I agree that it's mostly meh but also the output greatly depends on the model and effort. Mythos on max trends towards OK-ish more often than not. And it’s definitely noticeable compared to any Sonnet on mid. Though, it's extremely token hungry and max effort take forever to get through. A few times I got bored to the point that I just aborted it and went and written the thing myself.

@jardo@townwizard.net I do and I love it. I think people should use it more. In particular I reach for it in two cases. More expressive condition check. E.e. in MyClass(field: 42). This can be used in both a case, and an if.Complex destructuring. E.g. config => {deeply: {nested: {user:, password:}}} to get user and password in local vars.
