The phone should just be a web viewer.
Why is it not?
What's the closest setup (hardware, software, manufacturer) that looks like this?
My phone should just be a smart browser. My apps, largely running on cheap server/applicance devices I control, or via the same from friends I trust.

There's something to that! protocols + shared formats are the only way you can have truly personally designed systems that still interact with the outside world.
They don't necessarily need to be universal, but they need to be agreed upon and understood by any external source/actor you interact with.

A thought experiment in the form of a simple question that has been yielding lots of weird but useful ideas for me...
What if personal computing truly was personal, in the sense that it was completely tuned to what you need without having to worry about anyone or anything else... how might you change how you design and develop software in that setting?

@pointlessone@status.pointless.one Networks look different when using something like Tailscale with a group of trusted devices.
What I am describing in general requires a different approach to how you deliver it, but more or less the web is good and universal and with some rethinking, can be made much more local/personal.
