@cwebber@social.coop "the rewrite was done and then merged to main" — I find this part so egregious and so typical. With the rewrite practically all issues, merge requests, etc. are void. There was no reason for the rewrite to be destructive. But in good AI fashion, it of course was. That's all they know.

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org @davidho@mastodon.world I guess it also wasn't nearly as common to drive a pickup for no reason when a normal car would also do. (Certainly the case in my European perspective, and the monster SUVs are unfortunately on the rise here too (I have doubts on their road legality))

@MaddieM4@raphus.social @alxd@writing.exchange @tinker@infosec.exchange I wonder if alxd's statement might be still true, just in a different way. Not approaching from the communities, but from the licence. I'd think any reasonable person (but they're not reasonable :D) would be super careful about breaking licences around GPL, be it including snippets from non-copyleft in copyleft code, or the other way around. So maybe GPL comes useful. But then, as far as I've heard, there's not been clear cases settled about slopware plagiarism yet.

(Halo PS5 apparently, and they danced back from it)

@benroyce@mastodon.social @jtb@toot.wales @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu I really, really don't think we're being perfectionists or hypercritical, despite you latching onto those words so hard. Most of us know not to be idealists — hell, I'm coming from the Orbán country where the only solution was for every leftist to vote for a conservative, right wing guy; we're *very* far from idealism and perfectionism —, but we see the repeated refusal from the EC to take a hint with what people don't want. They just keep microsofting forward.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @jtb@toot.wales @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu The disappointment comes in the repeated actions of the Commission, and not from any kind of psyop I'm afraid. Emphatically: What you see in most of the comments isn't some anti-EU sentiment fueled by (typically Russia backed) far-right dolts. It is criticism on the repeated approaches, that one particular, *hard to interact with*, very removed from the People, part of the system is making.

@Walrus@toot.wales @derralf@fediverse.blackneon.net @Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy I don't like travelling. I like being elsewhere. Nothing makes me more miserable than spending 14 hours in a tin can bored out of my skull, be it on the ground or in the air. It also doesn't give me anything that I'm going to Elsewhere for: culture, food, things to see, people to meet.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @jtb@toot.wales So we do, every 5 years, and many of them have indeed been voting against many of the EC's attempts (e.g. chat control), which led to them (the unelected, uninfluenceable EC) to just retry later, because they understand consent about as much as Microsoft does.

@number6@fosstodon.org @Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy Railroads are used, they can't compete, because unlike Japan and China, we don't have a good superspeed network. While it still takes 13+ hours to do what can be done in 6 in Japan, and is otherwise a 1.5 hour flight + 2~3 hours of faffing about because, well, airports, people will prefer the flights until they become prohibitively expensive.

@lianna@micro.webgarden.click On one hand the whole thing of "if it's grassroots, it must be bad" resonates with me because that's exactly why the more grassrootsy parties in Hungary never got any traction, no matter how much visible work they did on the local level. (And I'm sure that Magyar's popularity was in part due to him having eXpErIeNcE) (haha so one of the most common retorts was, I don't know if from trolls or legit, that "and how would these newbies know what to do if they become government?" XD)

@benroyce@mastodon.social @jtb@toot.wales @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu How is being disappointed in them not understanding no, "perfectionist hypercriticism"? If they made *one* mistake and we whined about it to no end, *that*, that would be it. This is not that. They are eroding privacy rights left and right, repeatedly, from multiple angles, to serve corporate (and US) interests before Europe's. It's not perfectionism to want something not shit, it's perfectionism to want something perfect and immaculate.

On whether they should have a say, or, you know, opinions at all. Half of the UK didn't want Brexit, and more than half of the UK doesn't want to be outside the EU.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @jtb@toot.wales @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Can you call your congresspeople or senators (cf. representatives), or can you call your Secretary (cf. Minister)? I'm pretty sure even in a relatively less insane country you can the former but not the latter. As such you can't possibly put in "real work" to influence them. You can, however, pressure your reps, who are in Parliament (national or EU), who you can hope they'll take into account your pressure when they vote.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @jtb@toot.wales @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Sure, it's the elected heads of states, and in the other council the ministers appointed by said elected heads of states, but that's just way too many layers — I don't think we can say we have any say in the matter. Would you say that you, under any US president, have any kind of influence over who your Secretaries are and what they represent? And what they'd represent in an international formation with other Secretaries/Ministers?

Despite that like half of us are not whatsoever represented by the incoming conservative, right-wing government. And you probably have very little idea what the social and traditional media scene was like, because even in Europe most people were completely oblivious to just how fucked Hungary was in that respect. It could have deterred people, didn't.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @jtb@toot.wales @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu That was the case with the Kamala Harris votes, which is largely irrelevant here — in particular that we're not currently in an (EU) election season in the first place, and because election psyop/influence happens at a much lower level, at e.g. Russian interference in the Romanian elections, or each country's far-right parties financed by them (directly or indirectly). We're in rather different situations and different culture (i.e. what triggers or deters people).
