@EUCommission I don't want AI slop in my phone. I know this isn't something you hear a lot from the lobby creeps, but that's nowhere close to the list of enforcement priorities I'd like against Google or any of the tech broligarchs.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Except for that one platform that exploits musicians, pays them 0.013 cents per stream as referenced in a fun Eurovision song, now plans to replace them with AI slop and donated millions to the fash Americans whose stated goal is to destroy the EU? I love you, but why are you like this, lol? https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/@EUCommission/115757212763776892

@usti@witter.cz It's the Friday before Europe Day. Let's not waste our time on a Britoid, lol. Who cares what any of them have to say about the EU anymore? A huge Brexit benefit is to not have to give a single shit about their opinions. Happy Europe Day and have a great euroweekend! @jtb@toot.wales

@MSugarhill Big yes on all of those, except... I have a question about the last one: how? How does the @EUCommission force all member states or any member state to do this? What do you think the power relationship is between the German government and the Commission?

@MSugarhill The EU is not sovereign. Its member states have not agreed to cede sovereignity to EU institutions except for a tiny, tiny sliver of issues on which they keep trying to claw it back anyway (international trade and competition mostly). Everything else they refuse to share. So asking the EU to make member states do something they don't want to do via a Directive on non-competion or international trade issues is like asking me to go order my boss around. @EUCommission

And they could have built small, affordable cars and now cry for subsidies because the mega EVs they've built instead are too expensive. We're nobodies on Mastodon though, US calling them out on their bullshit isn't going to permeate in public discourse, where are the (non-putinist, tear-liberal-democracy-down) parties pointing this out to normies?

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu According to the European elections of 2024 as well as to nearly every national election in which Europeans choose the Council that runs the EU and makes EU law, and in which too many Europeans vote for EPP parties or straight up fascist as long as they tell them they'll fight for them to be able to keep their consumerist lifestyles unchanged, most Europeans are full of shit.

@punissuer@universeodon.com @zlasha@mastodon.online @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu PS: I don't terribly mind Europeans' hypocrisy in Eurostat polls as long as vdL actually uses it to do her usual dance with the far-right and the EPP where this week she lets them shoot wolves (because farmers can't be arsed to lock up their animals at night and because lbr, some simply enjoy and miss killing) and tear down the Green Deal and next week she's back to throwing the Greens a bone. I'm pragmatic, if hypocrisy helps move things along, so be it.

Russia loves to spray that shit on social media. But where's the response? Where are all the reasonable, concerned citizens who tell Eurostat they DO want climate change mitigation? If we're an idiocracy, we don't deserve to survive climate change anyway. I don't think *everyone* is dim enough to believe BILD. I do think many CHOOSE to pretend they do, out of convenience.

@Xzan@androiddev.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu "The people" tell pollsters what makes them look good and sound like reasonable, non-selfish, concerned citizens. We have a better method to determine their support for green policies: elections. It costs nothing to tell Eurostat you want the EU to *vaguely* do something about climate change and then vote for the most right-wing European Parliament in history both in the lower chamber in European elections and in the upper chamber, the Council, in national elections.

So who might those outsiders be? I don't have ANY vitriol for anyone not spewing stupid, entitled shit about the EU, regardless of where they are, but there are 3 EU citizens in this post and 1 non-citizen, so who are you talking about? PS: I don't care what half of them wanted, I'm happy to not have the UK blocking EU integration anymore. @jtb@toot.wales

@zlasha@mastodon.online @punissuer@universeodon.com @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu OK, but let's for a day a year at least de-centre 'murica out of our lives and try to be Europeans minding our own European problems for a change. The auto lobby isn't just strong because it owns the German government (at least seen from the rest of the EU where it's no different, but not to the same extent; Spain has way stronger fishing lobby, for ex). It also employs hundreds of thousands of Europeans and builds products a lot of them LOVE.

They're IMPROVEMENTS. For everyone. And if the men whose self-worth is so intimately tied to their motorised penis-replacement are such a minority, what explains Green parties recent electoral results across the EU?

Each European Commissioner is nominated by their national government, no member of the Commission is elected, they're the civil service, no civil service in Europe is elected. What we elected in June 2024 was the European Parliament, a totally different institution.

@MSugarhill @EUCommission Sure. Regardless, when you ask for action, the place to start is your Austrian government. Because again: asking the Commission to make member states do things the do not want to do, especially in areas in which they are sovereign, is like asking me to go into my boss's office and start telling her what to do.

@MSugarhill @EUCommission Is it? You asked the Commission to "make all gov apps open source". Does the same principle of government use (and payments from our state budgets) of propietary software not apply to mobile devices? I fully admit to knowing very little about the technicalities, I'm talking about the politics of autonomy: are they hugely different between government computers and government apps?

@MSugarhill @EUCommission I'm not talking about regulation. I'm talking about enforcement, without which they're scribbled signs on pieces of paper (or rather on Microsoft Word documents). The French gendarmerie hasn't been running on Linux for 20 years because the EC forced them to. Same applies to the Danish institutions, German land, Dutch institutions etc that are starting to make that switch. (On the other hand the German federal gov wants Palantir, so...)

Replying to
@MSugarhill @EUCommission It's never solely a home effort (except on defence/foreign policy mostly) and not everything gets decided by unanimity in the Councils, so your government might be on the wrong side of what the others decide anyway. And perhaps the EC has the technical expertise (I wouldn't know) more than an individual government. But the politics that would enable actual enforcement against American comps that can switch off most gov's computers? Those are not EC level decisions.

Neither them nor I should be the focus of political action from (broadly) progressive parties, we're outliers. The bulk of people in between have MOSTLY lived lives that only seem worthy to them if they're consumers. One status symbol of wealth is a shiny German car.
