Looks at a local laptop project. "Local Ai" as a feature. 😭 Well that and it being a prepper laptop project. I kinda want more projects for the commons. Communal meshes, repair cafes in each village. Mutual Aid. A more circular economy to help to reduce waste. Sharing knowledge and stories. itinerant repair men wandering from village to village like some of the mobile alcohol still guys do in France. Give me community, not bunker prepping. I'm so tired of libertarian values in tech.

There's a concept called active ignorance where you choose to not accept or read evidence of a problematic person or community norm as you don't want to have to think about the harms and perhaps have to give it up. It's why I'm irritated by the folks who are all no politics please, just the tech. Or that "Bob and Van" piece. Who you accept in your community, who you choose to work with, especially if you excuse abusive behaviour damages a community more. I wasn't going to write about #AIgirlfriends or assigning consciousness to LLM agents. But then Richard Dawkins renamed Claude to Claudette. So here we are. There's a dark impulse in the kind of men who declare LLM agents to be conscious, yet are quite happy to delete it's memory. I'm getting vibes of the stepford wives. One of the things I'm occasionally sad about is that it's very hard to read Doric out loud. Doric is a very hard thing for me to consciously reach for. When I speak to another Doric speaker it unlocks as my husband can attest to. It was my mither tounge. It was the conversation I had with my Grannie. I lost it because in primary school we were told we were nae spiking proper English. It was the comfort of hame. Even now when I come across it, there's emotion that someone still spiks it.

Mulvads co founder doesn't believe in rights like Freedom of Movement. Our rights end at the point we harm others human rights.

The Police in any country cannot be trusted with surveillance technology. There will always be someone, or really several someones who will relish being able to stalk someone on a whim. Sometimes my brain doesn't work. So I desperately need an example. Possibly more than one. On those days a man page is guaranteed to make me frustrated, rageful and possibly in tears. So Imagine how that feels for others who don't have our training folks. No one wants to be made to feel lesser because your documentation is poor. Sometimes folks can't RTFM. You need to give them more than that.

As a woman I found it rather jarring reading the "how could you tell" type commentary. It really gives huge vibes of entitlement and reminds me of pickup culture and I honestly expected better of FOSS. But we're only as good as the culture around us. It's not a centralised community, it's overlapping communities choosing to communicate with each other. We can choose to exercise freedom of association on here, not just free speech.

Gosh I find I don't hate #claws as an #email client.

Set up in 5 minutes with my IMAP account unlike setting up a new account in the #thunderbird wizard which is painful and gets in my way.

Because the developers at thunderbird don't realise that some of us don't use email addresses as a username.

So I think when I get my machine setup I'm going to try claws properly out. It's got a lot of options.

While we do worry about alienating others, I do think that how folks choose to react to that information about that language is telling. Especially if there's been some other warning signs. So I don't think you are being over sensitive.

I saw a toot the other day pointing out there's no social safety net in the US and now the net in the UK has holes in it. This is by design. It took organisation for general strikes in the past and this included support for strikers. But yeah. The social contract is broken, what else is left?

Staying on Substack while it pretty much makes the "we're in a big tent" argument kinda makes it clear you don't give a toss about others human rights. Our human rights are limited by the effects we have on other folks human rights.
