Just submitted a dissertation intersecting critical code studies, digital humanities, design research, and video game studies. Head of Study Program in Digital Humanities at the University of Bern. Beekeeper without bees. Currently into wetlands — he/him/agen/adhd.

Header is a lake with a forest-covered hill-slope on the left. Summery mood, few scattered clouds, small boats in the distance.

I don't get to read much non-dissertation texts, lately. Finally finished Kimmerer's 'Gathering Moss', which is just such a poetic read. I love her storytelling, intimateness, and insights. Right away picked up her book 'The Serviceberry' in a cute edition from 'Éditions Act Sud', a fantastic french publisher. Meanwhile got myself into 'Caliban and the Witch' and suprisingly were hooked instantly. I was the impression that I don't have the capacity or concentration for feminist/marxist theory lingo these days, but her way of writing about the middle ages and her perspective on movements like the heretics is suuuper compelling. I'm adding new research topics to my sidequests lists by the page! #Mosstodon #Bookstodon #Heretics #BirdsOfMastodon

Thanks @_elena@mastodon.social! Wonderful insights and thanks for investing your energies into this research. Another take away for me pertains how the Fediverse is 'complicated' to get into and stick around. Seeing how many political and institutional actors moved to #WSocial overly quick tells me that it isn't healthy either, to not know what's happening behind the scenes. Apparently, these actors haven't learned a thing, neither about the past, nor about network infrastructures. At least with the bit of friction you have with the fediverse, you have a didactic moment of realising that servers are somebody else's computer.

Super sad the blue jay wasn't included in the Wingspan Birds of Canada booster pack, but it makes sense (the blue jay doesn't give a f* about nations :nes_fire: ...). But I got to know this cutie, the ᖁᐸᓄᐊᖅ (qupanuaq) ! Very happy they made the effort to research and use the Inuktut name of the bird. https://youtu.be/m_NE7ptqIiE #BirdsOfMastodon #Wingspan

I wanted to work on an are.na replacement and instead I wrote 'goblin.sh', a bash utility for collecting and managing a stash of items (notes, files, or web things).

https://codeberg.org/thgie/goblin.sh

Writing the script made me realize what I liked and disliked about other such tools, and what kind of relationship I actually want with such computing activities.

Much thanks to @anmeisel@mastodon.social, who gave a fantastic workshop on the intersection of #Permacomputing, literate programming, and repair manuals. I took 'goblin.sh' with to that event and I was really motivated to rewrite the whole thing and wrap it in a proper README.

Next step, learning Lua!

I have never been more offended by a website's typography. Sent me directly into #ADHD overdrive, and wondering what this does to people with dyslexia. Screenreaders should be fine, but still, wrapping every single word through JS in a span is nasty.

RE: @devsimsek@universeodon.com

I'm less interested in the mathematical prove and rather in the concept of 'model collapse' and that it forgets what reality is like. That sounds wild. LLM is k-holeing? I mean, AGI is based on the wrong assumption that intelligence can scale, whatever that means. Intelligence is at best described as an assemblage of affordances and enactivism, and never not as a unit of measurement. That already creates a fallacy where people attempt to measure and apply it economically. Super unhealthy, let alone IQs rooting in eugenics and racism.

`goblin.sh` is super neat.

I expected this to be a sideproject I'll forget after a while, but I keep on working on it, and I keep on relying on it, which I really didn't expect. Polished some of the rendering today and added some sparkles.

https://asciinema.org/a/VGWnP202Dc4cldKS

goblin basically lets me add whatever I come across and want to keep (local and remote files, websites, thoughts), and adds it together with a sprinkle of information to a csv. Mostly just simple automation, but in cute.

I can't lay my finger on it, but there is/was something something about intellectual rejected men and their following career of bitterness... and crimes against humanity 🤔 It seems that he was not supervised by Habermas, but that the fallout between the two happened before such things could take place. https://archive.is/hvcjH @fcr@post.lurk.org @entreprecariat@post.lurk.org

End of spring in my town means, finally hearing the swifts giggle in the sky again. Also, observed a couple of kestrels circling a church tower. Guess I know now where they're nesting.

I repo-ed my `nano` setup for writing academic articles [1]. Pretty happy with how everything turned out so far, and I'm enjoying the simplicity of this a lot. I know `emacs` could do all of that, but we talked about this :drake_dislike:

That links up nicely with recent trends in sociology/psychology research and their interests in 'silicon personae' and 'synthetic data' (what a terminology, worthy a discussion on its own), e.g. creating survey data through GPT-backed simulated people. Besides audio-visual media and text, there is also a ongoing slopification of academic data-space. That process will most likely also intensify in the coming years. It just fits with the academic grind. Why ask people if you can prompt it? It's a such a defying assumption that everything there ever was is already contained in a LLM. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/political-analysis/article/synthetic-replacements-for-human-survey-data-the-perils-of-large-language-models/B92267DC26195C7F36E63EA04A47D2FE https://arxiv.org/html/2512.00461v1 @hito@tldr.nettime.org @bildoperationen@tldr.nettime.org
