@Blender So... you're still accepting it, but just calling it something totally different, which I assume is for appearance only, to wash away whatever stigma is now attached to it. Seriously? Patron level = €240k Includes: Logo and url on website, social media mention, credit in official reports and at events, Developer liaison, frontpage mention, board contact, Press release, tech blogpost, dedicated product manager for your area. #Anthropic Sow's ear ≠ silk purse

@db I got in the habit long ago to reserve addresses for every device I know is mine, so I guess without knowing it, I've sidestepped this issue entirely. Although, I had to reset one light last year to get it to honor an NTP time change. It was on a dusk to dawn setting and somehow got a corrupted local cache and also jumped into a different time zone. As I typed that, I'm thinking how absurd it is that a light bulb has a damned data cache in the 1st place.

@jacqueline@chaos.social Reading the meaty parts about how they'll 'operate going forward', and you get all you need to know in a few words... "Our three new operating principles are: Speed with Quality ... " You never, ever get both. History is littered with companies that tried and failed. "Ownership Mindset" Really? Employees who own none of it should just act like they do, 'cause, ya know... Yeah, Team! "Customer Outcomes" They've already watched GitHub implode, so yeah, more of that, please!

@iralmeida @Blender That's what was announced in today's release, but my point in setting out the details is to point out what their expectations were, and once Pandora's treasure box has a deposit, it still had to be opened to accept it. From what comments I've been reading over the last 2 days, what they have been shouting about is _not_ about how it was received... but that it was accepted _at all_. Tone deafness or 'reframing it' isn't the underlying issue.

@luxifer@social.luxiferapp.com @nixCraft@mastodon.social I appreciate that everyone, including all of us in this thread are actively looking and thinking about where things stand at this moment. The facts are clear enough that it was preemptive and was most certainly _not_ a requirement forced by lawsuits or legal actions. As I've mentioned elsewhere, unjust and unfit laws are overturned often, but I'll add that capitulation is not a fitting way to deal with privacy principals and personal freedoms.

@old_angry_queer@girlcock.club @nixCraft@mastodon.social I'm inclined to think that those in power within #systemd have zero interest in what anyone says or thinks at this point. #MicroSlop, #Meta, #IBM, and many of the project's 'supporters' have their #proxies inside being pushed/pulled into #compliance. The privacy door on Pandora's box is open, and many want to see it stay that way. Looks like nothing has been pushed to a release - yet. What then? Trusted #distros go scorched earth or split into even more factions?

@bert_hubert@eupolicy.social Of the several public repositories I have, there's only one that gets any fresh issue entries from anyone other than me. I doubt it will ever see a single submission from any LLM or AI agent. It would be nearly identical to what our asshat politicians refer to as "self deporting." The repository...? A series of #AI #blocklists . https://codeberg.org/lumiworx/HPT-AI-Blocklist Now I'm wondering if I should put up a new LLM/AI policy readme to encourage AI submissions.

@0xabad1dea @oblomov Now that you've got me thinking about the 'what if...' questions. Would this be an expected tactic? Will they automatically run some kind of checksum or fingerprinting match routine instead of just a simple, 'ifExists' routine? Would there be other checks for obscure 'evidence' of user tampering? Case in point... Opera Browser updates are still happening when the trigger in Windows scheduled tasks has been disabled. It manages to go around config settings anyway.

@pkal @cadadr @hywan I'm getting really tired of this game of reverse hot potato, where every time a hand-off is made to rework/revert some idiotic 'feature set' and force users into hopping from one program to another to get away from the crap we keep trying to get away from. It's an absolute waste of time to have to research every teeny little change to find suitable replacements when a maintainer/author buys into the AI con job and destroys an editor.

'Reduced footprints' like they describe happen by shrinking what's costing them in more than just money, and in whichever locations they already perceive to be ineffective or have a known impediment to saying yes to this new strategy. They expected pushback as they set this up and want to lop off the trouble spots and gain loyalty from fear of it happening to others.

@kimlockhartga A US Surgeon General once endorsed cigarette smoking until a researcher found a flaw. Then came the denial campaign from every tobacco company on the planet until it was universally accepted. Change the product - rinse/repeat - toxins creep in, addeditively collect, with an imperceptible compounding effect. There's no 'Chicken Little' when you/we/they were correct. Plus, gaslighting isn't a modern thing, and profits have been killing us all, and the planet, for centuries.

@kimlockhartga I've lived through life while losing extended and close family and friends to the after effects of greed. Coal miners, chain smokers (I quit decades ago), factory workers exposed to heavy metal and other 'forever' compounds. Vietnam vets with PTSD, Camp Lejeune PFAS victims, and countless others who believed some lie that ultimately made others rich beyond belief. I survived Prostate cancer but still have COPD on a slow but steady incline to deal with later. Yes, profits kill.

@kimlockhartga I have a sneaky suspicion that it's possible. If PFAS has proven anything, it's that it may have felt local to the US at one point, but it turns out that wasn't true. Once things are released, they tend to go damn near everywhere if they can be airborne or waterborne. Seems like fertilizer runoff might be capable of spewing its nastiness either way. Just because a country may not have a factory doesn't mean they are exempt from chemical fallout. PFAS: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-024-01402-8

@briankrebs Now, I'm starting to wonder if anyone has researched AI issues that will undoubtedly creep into or become new psychological problems. I'd assume that there will be plenty of new things that never existed before prompts were accessible by the public at large. I hope someone had the foresight to look into this stuff early on and had it running concurrently with AI research long before now.

I can't be the only one...

  1. Buy a #VideoGame when it's on sale as a bundle with most of the #DLC - maybe 3+ years ago.

  2. Install/Play the game until it's (mostly) finished.

  3. Notice while scrolling through a recent #sale that its last un-owned DLC's are selling at massive discounts and buy/install them all.

  4. Open the game and realize that you have no clue how it works, spending the next few hours killing yourself and copious numbers of NPC when you forget what buttons/loot do what.

"I have always been here
I have always looked out from behind these eyes
It feels like more than a lifetime
Feels like more than a lifetime

Sometimes I get tired of the waiting
Sometimes I get tired of being in here
Is this the way that it's always been?
Could it ever have been different?

Do you ever get tired of the waiting?
Do you ever get tired of being in there?
Don't worry, nobody lives forever
Nobody lives forever"

RE: @grandrapidsnews@mastodon.social

Someday, some will look back on these as 'the good old days', when we _only_ had to miss enjoying a festival or special event because of the inconvenience of #flooding , and not "we have to evacuate all of downtown".

So when is #AI going to swoop in and #SaveThePlanet, or change the #weather....?

@SeanCasten@mastodon.social

A question...

As non-residents in cities/townships/etc. that have AI data center owners seeking permits or rezonings to build and operate them... we don't have standing to speak at public input forums at the local level.

We often don't even know when they are in process due to signed NDAs and all of the secret communications.

Is there something that we can do to help our neighbors - and/or - is there something congress can do to force them into the light for public scrutiny?

Just to further add some context... It was bad enough that California enacted its own state law about the mandatory inclusion of #AgeVerification into every 'OS' available within the state. Follow that up by some quick (and 'silent') PR's being introduced and merged into systemd - with vigorous opposition - to this week's introduction of #HR8250 to mandate the same things into a #Federal #law. If you have any doubts on how invasive and ineffectual this could be, read: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/hr8250/text/ih

Have you consulted lawyers to get their legal opinion before you get sued? Whether you do it right or do it wrong, either side is going to file suit. Already have a huge defense fund? #AgeVerification in _any_ OS will never work. Age ID can only work at the exact point of contact between user & provider. It's contract law, not an issue queue.

If you're a fan of #animated #movies, this one won't disappoint you.

You'll probably recognize every A List and supporting actor in it, and the producer behind it... but I'm guessing you've never heard a word about it.

NOTE: It may not last long where it's posted for viewing, so now's the time to watch, or DL.

The movie is simply titled as "9", the number drawn on the back of the main character, voice acted by #ElijahWood , and was initially released in 2009.
