@toplesstopics@eldritch.cafe @drwho@hackers.town @Inumo@dragon.style That issue's been a problem since longer than AI spam though. Amazon's enshittified reviews for example have been a problem at least as far back as 2010. #ReviewFarms are an old phenomenon by now. More distressingly, libraries aren't always a good option either, funds to stay up to date or have a good collection often run out and malicious curation is most certainly a thing too.

@tenqciousb@mastodon.sdf.org @plaguepoems@mastodon.social > I haven’t known anybody who has contracted covid in 18 months

As I wrote: How do you know?

Antivirals are widely available

No they aren't, last I checked you need a prescription by a doctor here (it'll be too late by the time you get it) if you don't qualify as "at risk" (everyone is at risk, it's stupid).

Ya covid is “still a thing”. So are all colds and flu.

And as I noted, they're not harmless either.

@tenqciousb@mastodon.sdf.org @plaguepoems@mastodon.social Have they even tested? You don't get some status update that you're infected. And the rate of asymptomatic infection means you might only notice long-term effects. Widely available is a rather generous description as far as it goes in my country. And regarding the flu, maybe one should also consider not being so nonchalant about it given that all viral infections come with a risk of various long-term syndromes and pathologies. Here's a fun one: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jdi.13540

@sindarina 1.2.3.4 is cute and memorable though. They really should've reserved it, it would've been sensible. There's a reason the test phone numbers use all-5 sequences like (555) 555 XXXX. (Admittedly that really wasn't intentional and it just happened due to a number of reasons, but that's a detail.) I'm disappointed that wasn't a comment brought up when those RFCs were drafted.

@beforewisdom@veganism.social @brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org There's a worrying lack of care being shown by governments and nations around archiving of digital data in general. I wouldn't trust books to that unless that problem is resolved, and even then. It's not like it's impossible, the technology not only exists but is (or soon is) out of patent time (#HyperCDROM, petabyte glass CDs), so there's no excuse not to implement it and have multiple redundant facilities across a given nation storing them and equipment for them.

@tb@tldr.nettime.org It's mostly a hindsight is 20/20 thing. It's a lot easier to retroactively assess critical pivots once they've already been demonstrated as such. Although at the same time, one has to be certain it isn't just a single emergent manifestation of a general probability attaining realization. #MultipleDiscovery and #SimultaneousInvention are two examples of such a thing where addressing any single instance would do all of nothing. #TimeTravel #Change

As of the last time I checked, there's no prison involved, but the monetary penalties are steep-enough to dissuade the non well-off and the #copyright & publisher cartels are petty enough to bother with lawsuits with a guaranteed inability to recover legal fees.

@sbb@mstdn.ca @brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org It would probably be worth it for there to be public investment into making more common use of such material in books. Flash storage's circuitry also corrodes very rapidly in humidity. Perhaps not as quickly as untreated paper books might, but it's not exactly impressive either.

@negative12dollarbill@techhub.social I see. Wouldn't that be handled by just... not automatically downloading/opening files at the root of a domain because hosting binary files in such locations is just weird to start with? Of course nothing prevents a malicious peer from linking to another malicious non-root link anyway, so I'm not sure what attack it even adds.

@negative12dollarbill@techhub.social Not really, I'm just failing to see how this really opens any new vulnerability. You're still relying on your initial peer not pointing you to a malicious resource. Whether it's hosted at https://whatever.zip or at https://whatever.xyz/somefile.zip doesn't seem to have any bearing on the safety of the resources. Mandating a path would really just be if you absolutely want your client to blacklist .zip roots out of ineffectual paranoia.

The solution wouldn't be AI, but rather to stop producing garbage OSes & software that disempower users.
