@failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to Sorry, it's too late to make that argument now. Techbros have successfully co-opted the term "AI" to be equivalent to their LLMs and generative text/image slop. What you're talking about--the pre-slop machine-learning algorithms that are actually useful for finding drugs, discovering comets, analyzing medical images for cancer, etc. etc. is what "AI" used to refer to, but no more. (and TBF it was incorrect even for that kind of tech). Billionaires took the name for marketing purposes, to hype up their slop machines.. Kind of like how fascists co-opted the swastika, the OK sign, putting parentheses around someone's name in text chat to mean giving them a hug, the numbers 88 and 1488, all were appropriated. We can't use them for their original meanings any more because the meanings have changed. When people say they're anti-AI they are referring to the new meaning: slop. It says nothing about how they feel about the technology that AI used to mean. We'll have to come up with a new name for that. @keengrasp@layer8.space

Why the hell is King Charles still planning a State visit to the US after trump's threats of genocide? And why was he even planning one at all for that matter?

His trip should have been canceled immediately after that horrifying post was sent out.

Car is in the shop until tomorrow morning to fix leaks from both the oil and transmission pans. Will be rather pricey but considering it's a 2012 and I've almost never had to do any repairs other than normal maintenance, that's a small cost per year.

Also have the cable co. coming tomorrow morning to re-anchor my cable to the outside wall because the idiot neighbor decided to cut down some limbs and let them fall on the cables between the pole and my house, ripping the anchor bolts out of the wall of both the cable and the old unused telephone line. Not the power line though, thank God.

I went out and told him what he had just done and he started loudly yelling a bunch of angry gibberish at me. Not a word of apology, just immediate attack. I think he must be the owner/landlord, not the tenant. At least I hadn't seen him before.

RE: @dadbod@pdx.social

Re this article: I agree with their reasons not to buy another Kindle, but I think they're ignoring or glossing over some of the possible issues with the alternatives they mention.

For one example,
> Kobo also uses the industry-standard ePub format. This means you are not locked into one store. <

That's a little misleading. Yes, Kobo will read epubs (and some other formats), while the Kindle won't. But it doesn't work in the other direction. If you buy a book from Kobo, it won't be in the "industry-standard ePub format". Kobo uses its own modified format because of DRM. You'd have to strip the DRM before you could read it on another device.

@knoppix95 @signalapp A step in the right direction but they still require you to give them a phone number. 🙁 BTW, what happens when someone set up their acct with their phone#, then they lose that number because they don't keep up their phone service subscription? Especially if they've set up and still keep using the desktop app that was linked to that phone #? If that's a possible scenario, then someone else will eventually get that number, so wouldn't they be getting the original person's messages, or not be able to set up their own signal because their number is already active for the original person? I don't know how it works since I've never used it, but I've wondered about that.

Looking outside as we're on the back edge of a thunderstorm. It's still raining, but also the sun is shining, and I can see a rainbow. That's #Kansas in Spring for you.

I tried to take a picture of it but the rainbow doesn't show up in the photo.

I've noticed that posts appearing in your timeline because they contain a hashtag you follow, bypass your filters.

This doesn't seem right. The filter should take precedence over the hashtag.

@reflex@retrogaming.social If you decide to switch to a wise (not dumb!) phone, I recommend the Sunbeam pro (sunbeamwireless.com) for build quality, good UI, support, etc. In any case, if you get one that can provide a wifi hotspot, you could always keep your old smartphone with no SIM around, in case there's a time when you do need to use a specific app for something. So far I haven't had to do it, but if I ever do get forced to use someone's app, my plan is to get some cheap old smartphone somewhere to install it on and use only when required.

@profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social I went with Lemmy world because it was a pretty mainstream instance, but I've since found out that .world blocks a lot of communities that violate certain standards they have, and some on other instances think it's too heavy-handed that way. So something to bear in mind, you won't see everything if you're on .world. Other than that it seems fine.

Poor Ottawa, they just had a tornado the other day and today they got hit with 80 mph winds.

My area just got the edge of things, just a little t-storm as the worst, including a tornado, went by to our southeast.

Our weather guy, showing the highway cams, went off in great detail for about 5-10 minutes on why you shouldn't stop under an overpass. 😄

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I was thinking, maybe the posts with subscribed hashtags are treated like replies (which don't get filtered), or somehow otherwise processed separately from normal posts from accounts you follow. Or maybe I'm just wrong about how this post came to appear unfiltered in my timeline. But as far as I can tell, the post came to me only because I follow the minecraft hashtag, and it contains terms that should have triggered my filter. OTOH, I think I've had posts from a different hashtag I follow (emacs) that DID get filtered. It's very confusing!

@fosserytech@social.linux.pizza I don't think it's a matter of them having to go after us. It's a matter of being locked out if you don't comply. Such as not being able to access all or part of the internet, especially interfacing with online companies to buy stuff and access sites like youtube or whatever, if our device doesn't provide whatever kind of signature or certificate or whatever will be required. Most likely something controlled by a corporation like Microsoft or Google that will have to be capitulated to to get the "verification token" or whatever it will be called. Comply or ACCESS DENIED. And in time it will probably be baked into the hardware by manufacturers, like UEFI or even through UEFI, that any OS must get verified to be able to boot it at all. So I don't take this lightly.

@frox @knoppix95 @signalapp That's interesting. I wonder how many times people have gotten a new phone/phone# and not been able to use signal. In that case seems to me like the person who got their old number could easily just start using the signal app without trying to register as a new account, just as if the original person had gotten a new phone. The new person could just start up the app, verification proves they have the number. So they could see all the original person's messages and even send messages as them. Someone else said you could set a PIN to prevent that, but that sounded optional so people might not think to do it. But either way, there's a conflict of 2 people using/trying to use the same phone#, with no workaround. A phone # as the 'unique' acct # is just not a good way to do this.

@cockneylaurie He admires Charles, though. Not as much as he admires Putin, of course. But a sign of disapproval from the king would have an effect on him--how much of one, I don't know. Maybe they could phrase it as "Let's postpone the trip until conditions are a little less unpleasant, not a good look right at the moment, you understand" or something like that. That way, having the trip still be a possibility might make trump want to improve the situation. The pomp and circumstance of the State visit is important to trump's ego. They should call up rump's psychologist niece Mary, who analyzes him all the time, and ask her advice on how to handle him.

Then tell us why, instead of releasing this decision at the end of June like they've always done with every other decision, for *some reason* he decided to get this one ruling out at the end of April, two months early. Just in time for all those states to go hog wild with free-reign gerrymandering before the midterms.
