Quasi New Bike Day

After 10000+ km, I thought it was time to properly service my bike. New chain, chainset, bottom bracket, disk pads. Rides like a new bike! Thanks to Balfe's in Crawley for an excellent service.

So, in my quest to simplify my life, I have started to decouple myself from the large privacy invading cloud and AI based services (Microsoft and Google, I'm looking at you), especially with regards to calendars.

Emacs has built-in calendar, diary, and appointment capabilities. As I live in Emacs most of the time, these are sufficient for the vast majority of my calendar needs. However, until I achieve the holy grail of *Emacs on the go* (I'm getting there but not quite yet), I really do need an appointment notification system that works with my mobile phone.

The solution: advise (using `advice-add`) the `appt-display-message` function to send the appointment information to my phone, using `ntfy.sh` (so still cloud based but hopefully less intrusive).

This works because I have Emacs running 24/7 on my home desktop.

I use exwm (the Emacs window manager) on a Debian stable system.

As far as I can tell, I have customised everything I can to bring up either eww or firefox when I need to browse the web (eww preferred but some sites need a graphical interface with javascript, e.g. my bank).

Annoyingly, for some reason, opening a URL sometimes brings up librewolf. I cannot see anywhere in my config that references librewolf.

Does anybody have any suggestion on how to figure out why librewolf is being run instead of either eww or firefox?

Thanks!

PS - yes, maybe I should switch to librewolf instead of firefox... but that's for another day.

I will be examining a PhD student soon. I have to read their thesis. I brought out my reMarkable e-ink tablet to use it to read and annotate the thesis. So much better than using a laptop or (even worse) printing it out and carrying 200+ pages around...

I am continually impressed with this tablet. I have the first version which I bought when they first came out (10 years ago now?). I hadn't used it in a few months so it seems that there have been software updates. When I turned it on, several updates installed automatically.

The system works perfectly and now has new features and better performance. Kudos to the company for providing all updates to all of their different models, even the very oldest ones. 👍👏

In my dreams, my (similar age) mobile phone (stuck on Android 8) would have this kind of support. Ha.

Cycled the Downs Link from Christ's Hospital to Brighton via Shoreham-by-sea. A large segment of the route goes alongside the River Adur. We were lucky with the weather for once! Lovely day and a great ride.

Excellent article, by Blain Smith (@blainsmith@fosstodon.org), on the need for a broader education, especially for computer programmers:

Thanks to Sacha Chua (@sacha@social.sachachua.com) for including this in her most recent weekly Emacs news post.

Just got my electricity stats from the energy company. April was a good month. Imported 34 kWh (average of just over 1 kWh per day) but exported 284 kWh (almost 10 kWh per day)!

UK Politics
Voted! But what a palaver: show polling card, they ask for name and address (even though these are printed on the polling card), show ID ("what kind of ID is this?" when I give them my bus pass), write down voting ballot numbers next to my name (secret vote; what's that?), go and vote (but only one person at a time although the stand caters for 4 at a time with dividers for privacy). #UKLocalElections

RE: @SusiArnott@mastodon.green

For those of you in the UK, don't forget to vote next month! Local elections often have very low turnout but we are at an interesting point in terms of possible outcomes from this election which may have long term impacts on national politics.

Every vote matters.

@matt_ellery@mastodon.social Thanks. I do know all of that and hence why I still continue to exercise my right to vote. I just have never heard a really compelling rationale for this process to take place at all. In any case, it's simply me tilting at windmills and only something I comment on whenever there's a vote... A form of venting. ;-)

@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr I read using koreader on my Kobo. I believe there are stats hidden away somewhere in the system but I definitely do not see them. Unless you turn the status bar on, the interface is just the text of the book you are reading. The only statistic I care about sometimes is how far through a book I am, just to know whether to keep on reading to finish a book or get some sleep instead. ;-) #Kobo #KOReader

The OS on the Pebble was updated in the past day or so. One of the news items says that there is now an "Extra Large" text size option, supposedly under "Display" settings. I cannot find it. Anybody else seen this?

I have noticed, however, that the "Large" text size setting is now applied throughout the system. This really helps, especially for the settings menu.

@draxil@social.linux.pizza It's the inconsistencies in the choice of valid ID forms that really bothers me: older person's bus pass okay but not the young person's bus pass, for instance, even though same level of proof required to get both of these types of bus passes. A form of (non-geographic) gerrymandering, methinks.
