EDIT: Advice no longer needed, and thank you all for your thoughts!

For those that are interested, the top 3 are Bullitt, then Omnium, and possibly a Tern. Almost certainly second-hand or refurbished. Now my partner and I will chat about which to go with.

I'm going to mute this thread but I'll check in on it from time to time. And I'll post results! Thank you again!!! <3

--

Advice please!

I'm looking for a cargo bike.

- Needs to comfortably carry a 100kg me and like 30 - 40kg in shopping
- Needs to comfortably negotiate gravel (so fairly phat tyres)
- Ideally sub-$4,000 AUD
- I'm very open to it being a non-electric bike. An acoustic bike, if you will.
- It will supplement a Cannondale Quick (used for commuting) and a Shogun eBike (used when I'm feeling lazy). We're #CarFree
- Does not need to be new

I'm currently using the Shogun to carry me and the shopping, and I'm slowly destroying it. I think it needs to go back to its intended use - a VERY BASIC runaround bike - and I should get something more suited to cargo to carry... cargo!

What are your thoughts?

EDIT: Boosts welcome, and #BikeTooter

Dear July 2025 Joe,

It's fine, you can buy the Ortliebs and there will be absolutely no regret. It will make everything approximately fifty billion times easier.

Sincerely,

March 2026 Joe

Don't be a scab!

Close any ABC tabs (news, iView, whatever) and don't open a new one until after 1100hrs tomorrow. It's the least we can do.

If something's only available on Amazon, then it's not available to me. There has to be some line. Some point at which my convenience isn't worth... /That/. And the only way /that/ can continue is with my cash. With our cash. It's us doing it, not Jeff.

@kauer 😍So good! My good friend has red ones 20 years old, we worked it out at $6.50 per bag per year - I hesitated at the $250, but it's been 3 days and I'm kicking myself I didn't get them sooner lol

@kauer @nikcorg The ~130kg or so I'm putting over the back axle regularly has the rear hub motor audibly complaining, and the trailer (a two-wheeled, steel framed trailer custom built by my mate) is fantastic for carrying large loads well, but is just too big for me to regularly and comfortably take down the tracks I ride daily. It's an option I was very much hoping to be my winner, but sadly isn't :( I will definitely keep using the bike though!

@kim_harding That's an excellent point - durability is an absolute must, and come to think of it, repair-ability is also an extremely high personally-important preference. I think it'll be as you point out, going acoustic to save on both weight and cost :)

@marialuosto Some of the places I go will only fit a 2-wheeler (I'm in a country town with pretty much no bicycle infrastructure, so a lot of the time I need to go down gravel tracks so I don't risk the highway) and I very much like the long tail, but I'm thinking it can be possible for me to build an enclosure to go on the tail?
