Somehow silicon valleys greatest innovation of the decade is a new way to *increase* drama in open source
We didn’t actually need more drama

@MaddieM4@raphus.social I put that full quote in article once, because as soon as I had the context I was very annoyed no one ever includes the context

I couldn’t remember which terrible ai thing ruined my mood, but then I saw it was developers@ trying to move slop directly into code review

I am so happy that Scotland isn't counting overnight and I didn't wake up to another election horror. The last 15 years were bad enough.
Not a great trade as I'll be checking all day instead.

I wouldn't say I hate rebasing code, but in the middle of this one I took apart a toy piano

I wasn't prepared for this code to work without much more effort and now I'm at a loss for what to do next

@mntmn@mastodon.social ah yeah of course!
From looking at other platforms I don't know if there is any great answer. Most full systems have a weirder firmware interface that is likely worse.
I'm trying hard to avoid learning how powers opal works as an example

@tuxpowered@ipv6.social @oxy@social.bsdlab.au I understood that dpdk has a “forbidden” driver for Mellanox it uses. dpdk drivers are pretty unrelated to FreeBSD ones, if it works with dpdk on Linux then FreeBSD shouldn’t be far off
I could easily for 40GBit through my T6 cards

Never let anyone talk you out of a quick 15 minutes reading a datasheet. Those 6 hours tracking it down will be the best 4 months of debugging you can imagine.

@goeranh@mastodon.online @tubsta@social.bsdlab.au @oxy@social.bsdlab.au I'm not really sure there is an episode there. It enables you to mix host and vpp networking, but with a lot of rough edges.
What it needs is real use cases to work out the issues.

@tubsta@social.bsdlab.au @oxy@social.bsdlab.au No one complained about the port being 2 years out of date.
Take from that what you will.
It is stable and useable enough for small networks (not slow, but managing 10+ machines would be tedious)
We are missing something like linuxcp which wasn’t required, but is a big help for sensibly managing a network.
I don’t run production networks so I couldn’t close that part of the loop without a user heading into production.
I’d say vpp on FreeBSD is mature enough to start building a product with, but you’ll need a vpp hacker to get over the line.

This risky business feature episode is totally worth listening to
https://risky.biz/RBFEATURES14/
To paraphrase “we spent dozens of humans worth of effort and fuzzing and we couldn’t actually improve the code base”

@tdr112@chaos.social take a quick trip to Aberdeen and we can spend a day playing “fix the bikes”
It’s easier when there’s no pressure, but it’s one of those things that learning it is harder than doing it

@thelastpsion @netbsd from your posts I recon the epoch side is easier to deal with now. I’d be happy to help do kernel stuff to revive the port

@sirwumpus@tilde.zone @profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social thanks to this reply I realised you wanted C help and not C# help. For C# I thought you were shit out of luck.
Intro C these two sources are the best way to start, but then you need a problem to work on. The language brings little so you quickly end up in someone’s ecosystem.
I’m happy to help if you have a project in mind.

@jacqueline I can easily reinvent the useful ide bits in a terminal with awful hacks, but I can't reinvent the terminal without doing real actual work in an ide and that requires "using an ide"

@Edent@mastodon.social it feels like an incredible waste of time, it’s probably sucking the air out of the room for any good protocol too.
Typo: “I was even invited to a top-secret private channel for speaker.”
Should be “speakers”

People moaned like hell with when twitter made favourites boosts, but it would really have helped my SOF's album get more reach if it happened here.
It isn't like it matters, it was released years ago. I just like confusing him with sales
