Although many biologists regard variability as at best a nuisance and at worst a hindrance to biological systems, many empirical examples demonstrate that variability is an ability, not a disability. From the molecular to the ecological level, there is evidence that this ability to vary has been harnessed by biological systems and is a positive force for adaptation and change. The @Co_Biologists@biologists.social just funded our workshop "Playing Dice: Chance as a Biological Strategy", so no date and venue, yet.

@jonny@neuromatch.social @ipsquiggle@sunny.garden In biology alone, we have 2236 databases like FlyBase: https://academic.oup.com/nar/article/53/D1/D1/7919991 Only a handful of these 2236 are funded as infrastructure, i.e., on recurring funds. An entire field of biology would come to a screeching halt without any one of them. And yet, journal payments, something much less critical for daily work than these databases, are on recurring funds. Which is why our library is cutting journal payments and redirecting the money to databases.

https://www.laborjournal.de/editorials/3477.php

@HansZauner@ecoevo.social @BlumeEvolution@digitalcourage.social Guter Punkt!

After the Council of the EU demanded to address the "Hazards of Scholarly publishing"

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2023/05/23/council-calls-for-transparent-equitable-and-open-access-to-scholarly-publications/

a whitepaper was published that outlined the plans:

https://op.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/3603e219-6a65-11ef-a8ba-01aa75ed71a1/language-en

this year, ORE is set to launch the next stage:

https://home.cern/cern-host-europes-flagship-open-access-publishing-platform/

https://www.fwf.ac.at/en/news/detail/joint-commitment-to-strengthening-open-research-europe

Things look to be finally moving in the right direction.

Interesting #preprint on automated reference-checking.

It "runs entirely on [one] machine (free public databases, a single consumer GPU, and open-weights models) with no [...] external services. The pipeline verifies that references exist, checks retraction status, compares metadata against canonical records, downloads and parses cited papers, verifies that they support the claims made about them, and [...] checks cited papers' own bibliographies.

@Illuminatus@mstdn.social Oh yes, the academic journals have been a focus of discussion for decades now. For example, #preprints (1990s) and #openaccess journals (2000s) were launched as consequences of these discuissions. However, none of these developments did much to dent the pernicicious effects these journals have had on scholarship. In 2022, the European Comission has launched a project it now is expanding into a journal replacement: Open Research Europe (ORE). @jonny@neuromatch.social @ipsquiggle@sunny.garden

@NMBA@mstdn.ca Yes and no. What I hear from there is that practices have just recently started to change. What they used to do is pay authors for publishing in certain journals, i.e., an incentive to publish in certain places but not others. In particular, they were paid to poublish in highly ranked journals, likely contributing to the replication crisis: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/human-neuroscience/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2018.00037/full That's one of the reasons the practice apparently is about to change.
