Oh wow, it's possible that I do not like fish (as food, not creatures--I love fish as creatures!) because it smells different to me than it does to other people!

@semitones@tiny.tilde.website @futurebird@sauropods.win He was lying by omission anyway. Thomas was a highly ranked swimmer before she started transitioning. The 250 rank came after beginning hormones but before she was allowed to compete as a woman. "During her freshman year, Thomas recorded a time of eight minutes and 57.55 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle that ranked as the sixth-fastest national men's time..." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lia_Thomas

@semitones@tiny.tilde.website @futurebird@sauropods.win That's what social media and generative AI have done to people. Nobody bothers to actually research anything for themselves. They report as truth what somebody said on Facebook or what ChatGPT told them. It takes two minutes to read Lia Thomas's Wikipedia article, a few more minutes if you want to click through to the sources and learn even more. It's not hard to be well informed. But it's so damn easy to just repeat easy lies that support your bigotry.

@idzie@kolektiva.social I live in a verdant, fecund place with rolling red clay hills covered in white oaks, tulip poplars, and pignut hickories (and century-old human planted pecans). The understory is filled with mountain laurel, buckeye, azaleas, and dogwoods. Among them hop the brown thrashers and Eastern towhees, and ruby throated hummingbirds visit the flowers. We are in the shadow of a monzonite dome monadnock covered with loblolly pines struggling to hang on. Diamorpha blooms red in shallow depressions.

@bert_hubert@fosstodon.org Reading over your updated page, it seems like we just have different interests. For looking things up, all modern biology textbooks are basically interchangeable, and I know because I've been on textbook selection committees many times and looked at so many of them. They're written by committees, each with their own biases, and they all read that way. I wouldn't bother putting any of them on a "best of" list. I mostly use OpenStax in my classes so my students don't have to pay.

@bert_hubert@fosstodon.org No, when it was published, it wasn't read much at all. But in the year 1900, DeVries, Correns and Tschermak all rediscovered his work while working on similar questions, and they all credited him in their foundational works. I read it in college, and it's beautiful and elegant in a way that few modern books are. Sorry, I just hate to see modern textbooks or (sigh) Richard Dawkins getting attention over the actual founders of our science. https://www.genome.gov/25520238/online-education-kit-1900-rediscovery-of-mendels-work
