A relative keeps posting "saint of the day" images that I'm quite sure are slop, which feels horrifying considering she is an environmental engineer and quite militant about environmental issues.

Saturday the previous week was ungodly hot in here (34° C), then throughout Sunday it started getting more overcast until we got storms and cold (as low as 15° C) during the week. Now yesterday we got scorching heat again, and it seems to be holding.

This fucking weather. El Niño with the new global temperatures is fucking bonkers.

I really hate that "microwaves" have wavelengths several orders of magnitude larger than 1 micrometer.

These "micro" waves can have wavelengths ranging from 1m to 1mm. Micrometer waves are not in fact microwaves!

@lynnesbian Good old "we are increasing security, it just happens to inconvenience everyone that doesn't give us money". And then you get security experts that will push it because it is the only option that big tech will implement. Seriously, we need everyone but specially the security industry to accept that vendor lock-in and loss of user control are major threats for most people.

Just got the funniest captcha.

It asked me to select "all objects that float naturally", and the options looked like shovels, bunches of screws, and ducks.

This is basically the witch scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It should have asked me "who are you who are so wise in the ways of science" when I completed it.

@ifixcoinops@retro.social If people have to know what is a static site generator (or a domain registrar, or how to hire some server company, or what is a CDN, etc), it already lost most people. You should just open "site creator" on your computer. It should be as easy as cloud tools are - somehow google lets you make a document and host it and share it, but no one can't do the same for a fucking HTML file?

@ajroach42 It has been a recurring point in ultraconservative agendas to attack schools to stop them from teaching kids anything that undermines their abuse and control. In the US you have extremes like abstinence-only sex education, or creationism taught in schools, but the agenda has spread worldwide. Often targeting queer themes, but also history, economy, religion, etc. The narrative is always the same. Parents' choice, parents' control. Schools are "indoctrinating" kids. The evil conspiracy that includes both government and individual teachers and even other parents. Everyone has an agenda, save themselves... and kids, that can't have a will of their own. It is easy to look at Facebook and say "hey they are evil, can't let them control what kids do". But somehow, "parents can isolate their kids from everyone and everything" is also nefarious, and far from the only alternative.

@jonmsterling For me, the one thing that died was Firefox' "live feeds" feature. I still miss it, there isn't really any replacement that works quite the same. I actually never heard of Google Reader while it was alive.

Just finished 35 slides for my class later this evening. Dense, comprehensive slides because it is what the students will use to study.

It took me only about 2 hours... but that is because I had already researched, considered what to include and not, organized the topics, planned what I am going to say, saved all 23 pictures, and had a template ready.

Preparing classes is a _fuckton_ of work. Thankfully for all my other subjects I already have the classes ready, because only this one is more than enough work.

Also it is so quaint to submit all my documents and application physically, in paper. Seven copies of my CV! Just last week I applied to another professor job in a nearby technical school, and it was fully online. Last year I had to print some things for the one I tried, but just for the last part, not to apply.

@rkaj@mastodon.nu @jrdepriest@infosec.exchange @JenJen@mastodon.art Speak for yourself. Brazil does have its own payment method that does not rely on credit card companies (only the respective banks), it is free and somewhat private (banks don't know what you bought, though they will know the transaction) and instant and everyone can use it both for paying and receiving payments. It's not that hard to do. Of course, the US threatened sanctions over it, and there are many other political interests in not replicating or interoperating with this system.

@aks@scalie.zone I really wish stable distros were more viable, but trying to fit every software into your schedule and hoping it works out is just not a great plan. Software meant to be updated every few weeks isn't going to work well for years just because you froze the version at some random point.

The strategy games are good. I have thousands of hours in them (combined, not each - such madmen exist but I'm not among them). But they decided that they wanted to be a AAA publisher, and started making every mistake AAAs do. Every unethical thing, but also every utterly stupid thing.

I was willing to buy almost all DLC for CK2, EU4 and Stellaris. I got it on the deepest sales, over a looong time, but I was a hardcore, loyal customer. And they managed to lose me completely. Not make me a hater or anything, I just... don't even _want_ to buy anything from them. It jumped just so many sharks.

I'm not exactly _excited_ about it, but the trailer for the Street Fighter movie made it look fun. Which hasn't happened in a good while - I'm not very into movies these days, particularly not new releases.

Probably the fact I'm not particularly into the franchise (I can name some characters but couldn't tell much about any plot) contributed. I'm sick of adaptations.

@anna I hope I'm not coming as too much doom and gloom. This would be all within "makes the job harder" (and people less motivated and more isolated). But other things, like big tech gaining influence, have been going on for a while, and this has been quite quick and intense.

@robinhood@yiff.life This got my dad so, so far despite not being in a tech career and not stopping to learn or anything. He was miles ahead of most of his peers. There were some problems during the "a million fake download buttons in every page" era of the internet, but eventually I installed some good adblocker for him and it was fine. And then with the smartphones era there is no proper undo button and the options are now hidden instead of buttons on the screen, so he has much more trouble.

Heya friends, my instance is completely blocking yours in a week. I'm sure we are not the only ones, many already had "soft blocks", so once again I'll recommend finding a better instance and migrate there. Weirder.earth is accepting new users (we can invite y'all), and there are many other cool instances.

The .social and .online "flagship" instances are full of problem users (no surprise, considering how ginormous they are), it is just unsustainable. And again due to the size, we can't block just the problematic parts - it's all or nothing. On a smaller instance you wouldn't have to bear the burden of all those other people, and could benefit more from the federated nature of the fediverse.

Battle Beast, Here We Are:

"Here we are (we are, we are)
Standing strong (we are, we are)
Hand in hand (we are, we are)
We carry on

Finally, the path is clear
Lighting up the darkest night
Never has it been so near
A sweet victory"
