Good morning! I'm delighted to announce the release of the Oral History of LIAS project. https://liashistory.com/ In 1974, Penn State bought its first computer. In 1979, it released its first library circulation module. By the mid 80s, you could search its catalog from a terminal or the rare home PC. These interviews are with 14 people who worked at the Libraries in that era. It's both a library history and a computer/automation era history.
Oral History of LIAS

Oral History of LIAS

An oral history conducted about the Library Information Access System (LIAS) developed at Penn State University Libraries between 1979 and 1999. These interviews were conducted by Ruth Kitchin Tillman between 2021 and 2024 and published in 2026. Interviewees range from the lead technical architect to library staff who worked in cataloging or public services during the LIAS era and two deans.

@bloodravenlib one of my friends shared this because it was involved in the "Mac and Cheese bomb incident 3 years ago." His kid left some unfinished mac and cheese fermenting in it for a week because of spring break, when he tried to open it, it took a wrench and the lid exploded into his arm and caused a massive bruise. He'd blamed it on the food fermenting which surely contributed, but this explains why it was so bad (luckily just bruised).

New blog post -- how powerlifting and mastodon made me learn ffmpeg: https://ruthtillman.com/post/learning-ffmpeg/

Powerlifting and Mastodon Made Me Learn FFmpeg | Ruth Kitchin Tillman

Powerlifting and Mastodon Made Me Learn FFmpeg | Ruth Kitchin Tillman

The desire to share my powerlifting videos on platforms with comparatively little capacity for large amounts of data led me to finally tackle FFmpeg. I share a bit about my use case, then describe and reflect on my process.

Good evening nerds! I have been using OpenRefine for ...over a decade now and I did not realize that there was such an easy way to repeat operations across projects. It's easiest when you're working on spreadsheets which all have the columns and needs.

I have an overview, a walkthrough with screenshots, AND I made you some sample data!

#OpenRefine has an API! Not just a recon API, a straight up interact-with-projects API. https://ruthtillman.com/post/openrefine-api-basics/

I had only seen it in passing before, but my recent project prompted me to investigate. This post is just a little taste, since I don't know it well, but it might be a starting point for others who can think of a good use case in their own work.

Will a single lesson be learned from this? I think it's very useful they shared because it's an example of how promises != realities from all companies involved in this situation and a story to point to as evidence that marketing claims are being treated the same as technical specs/tests.

Well into blame we get: "The Railway GraphQL API allows volumeDelete with zero confirmation. A single API call deletes a production volume. There is no "type DELETE to confirm." There is no "this volume is in use by a service named [X], are you sure?" There is no rate-limit or destructive-operation cooldown. No environment scoping. Nothing between an authenticated request and total data loss." I'm like -- well, it was a POST operation with the API key, not a UI. I don't know what to tell you

@darius while very few things are truly in our control, it is wild to me how people have become so embedded with black box commercial products that are constantly being iterated on. I can still use Python 2.7 if I want to.

cont... because THEY committed the CLI token to their repository? So if you've got these tokens and you haven't done simple due diligence to determine that they have superuser god powers, and then you commit to your repository? That's a you problem as well as a them problem.

Well, it appears someone tried to phish the entire Penn State Libraries directory (or a chunk of it) with a bogus PaLA invitation-ish. I assume if someone had replied to confirm, they'd have gotten sent to a spoofed payment site. Feel free to boost or cross-post to other social media since it's likely they're targeting other Pennsylvania libraries.

"3. CLI tokens have blanket permissions across environments. The Railway CLI token I created to add and remove custom domains had the same volumeDelete permission as a token created for any other purpose. Tokens are not scoped by operation, by environment, or by resource at the permission level. There is no role-based access control for the Railway API — every token is effectively root. The Railway community has been asking for scoped tokens for years. It hasn't shipped." equal blame here...

I also want to proudly report that at Code4Lib last week I realized I had a 32GB Blu-Ray rip that I hadn't compressed or anything and gave it a shot just using ffmpeg to change to MP4 (it's just a use copy so I can enjoy on my laptop) with great success!
