The #software adage is: fast, good and cheap--pick two
#AI chooses fast twice
mastodon 4.7.3Current mood: I used to have a Heinlein quote here but even when I wrote it I hadn't read or thought about RAH in >20 years and *that* was 5+ years ago.
I am fortunate that someone pays me for 8 out of the 24 hours/day that I am a nerd.
the Canadian #wildfires threw me into an #airquality #adhd #hyperfocus
I now own a PM1/2.5/10 detector (also co2, etc) and found my house air is surprisingly clean considering we have 4 cats
I'm still gonna build a corsi-rosenthal filter just for fun (since I have a way to measure effectiveness)
While ordering filters for that , found out neither of us has been changing the furnace filter. In fact, we don't even own the correct size. The "filters" (more like loose sponges) in there appear to be original from....2021?
Maybe the thick coats of dust explain why the air is so clean. But it might be better to take the strain off the blower...
Anyway, ordered a pack of MERV 13s in the right size so we'll see.
It's really our fault for going to a #mexican #food #restaurant in rural #Minnesota
Recipe:
- roast chicken + ground beef with mushroom sauce
- iceberg lettuce salad
- sprinkle with a medium quality taco powder
- drizzle with imperceptible cheese
- a single thin slice from the one tomato you are rationed per day
If you add any fresh onion or jalapeno, you will be fired!
You can almost feel the restrained urge to add a side of limp green beans
Just passed a ~5mm #kidneystone. This one was been bothering me I think for months. It's especially been a problem for the last 2-3 weeks.
Two days, ago I tried an experiment in, uh....alternate urination methods. Positioning, etc.(I highly recommend this, btw. It's dislodged more than a few.)
I felt it move! A couple inches! To somewhere painful in different ways!
But 36h later...POW.
(I think there's still more in there, tho....)
#inkscape learning continues
I followed one comprehensive set of tutorials from a #logo #design person and that was extremely helpful. I got to the point where I could do do his projects based on thumbnail without watching the video.
Now I'm watching a more #artist type person who makes characters and scenes so I can get some more organic techniques.
I think I'm getting it!
(This #art is not mine. The point is that I came up with my own *process* after only looking at an image.)
ok, yes, capitalist gouging is up
ok, yes, trumponomics
ok, yes, inflation exists
ok, yes, complaining about "prices today" is an old person thing
BUT
A plain Five Guys burger is now $11.29
Ooooooo, I finally get it!
#Voyager, clearly the best #StarTrek, had three strong female characters including a super-sexy Vulcan/autistic type who was intimidating to many male characters
Someone didn't like that, so #Enterprise was created! White men back in charge! So few women they have to have a character explicitly say "the crew is 30% women" (wow.)
And most tellingly, a super-sexy Vulcan who over the course of just a few episodes is put into multiple sexual situations she clearly doesn't like *including direct, violent assault*
Eep.
The #constraintprogramming #radar #scheduler I've been working on is going fine.
My boss wants me to brief the #operations group on it this week.
However, I now see the invite has been forwarded around so that now it's Operations + 7 people at my boss's level (from two groups) and 1 person a level above them.
So I have to give a talk that addresses all those interests plus now I have stratospheric scrutiny. Well, cumulo-nimbus anyway.
If you want to NOT have a scheduler because I've been paralyzed with fear, this is the way to do it.
I've mostly only seen #JamesBond #movies on TBS in the 80s and 90s. So the extent to which they don't make sense I've always chalked up to cuts for #tv
Then we watched Thunderball yesterday.
What a turgid, confusing ball of hot garbage. There's a couple fun scenes, mostly in the first half. Then an hour of meandering.
Let me ask you: How many dark-haired Bond(-like) Girls are in this movie?
Fiona Volpe: Red-hair assassin
Domino: Brunette sister of pilot
Paula: Dark red/brown haired CIA agent
All three are the same age and height with the same makeup and "mod" outfits
Some in the room thought there was a fourth. But telling them apart was impossible, even with long plot lulls to figure it out
Flew back from #heathrow #uk and found great posters near the terminal trams. recreated my fave in #inkscape
some ratios and fonts are wrong, but gimme a break--I was on a laptop above the Atlantic!
Also, #game background #art. Almost everything artistic is copied from a tutorial, but I think I'm getting some technical facility with the tool itself by recreating it from a screenshot only
I had forgotten how completely fascinated I used to be by the Felix the Cat #cartoon
The Professor *lives in an observatory*. His nephew, Poindexter, has a not just an incredible lab/workshop but also a....button in the center of his chest...?
(I just realized how clearly Dexter's Lab is so so so clearly based on Poindexter--it's right there in the name and location! Plus they look similar. Except for the button.
OMG, and #Futurama also has a Professor and his nephew living in an observatory.)
There's also many weird inventions and robots.
Plus the magic bag of tricks which also fascinated me. It's a cloth bag but can form hard shapes? So you just see bag fabric pattern in the shape of, say, a tank. It basically looks like MSPaint-level texture mapping.
The Cogenitor episode of #StarTrek #Enterprise is infuriating
Yes, Tucker didn't think ahead. But Archer failing to grant asylum is the cause of death here.
And Archer saying he'd never have done anything like this provably false. He's done it more than once *on camera*
If the show gave any indication that Archer (and T'Pol!) were in any way in the wrong this would be a great ep. As-is, I can't take it.
Why why why is it not possible to find a #tv mounting bracket that
a. can take a 60"+ tv
b. extends out 20"+
c. adjusts/slides down
Any pair of these is easy to find, but not all three.
(Don't theorize that it can't be done. The ones that cover a+b could easily have a sliding rail/pole at the end that wouldn't change the physics at all)
The #Giuliani hospital story is referencing a car crash from 2025 that makes no sense
He stopped to help a domestic violence victim. After the police arrive he leaves. "Minutes later" and "directly across from" the DV site, he is crashed into at high speed.
Police say it is unconnected.
The f
We will be driving from Seattle to Boston in a few months. I have weeks of vacation, so we can go slow.
We already have one known stop in the Chicago/Grand Rapids/Fort Wayne area.
What should we stop and see? Dumb stuff only. (And we've already seen Wall Drug, albeit 30 years ago.)
"Many 401(k) participants own broad market index funds, which have naturally become more concentrated in a handful of large technology companies as those firms have grown.”
I pray for the day words once again mean something.
I've really been loving #HelloFromTheMagicTavern (#HFTMT). I came to it through #HeyRiddleRiddle, thanks to Adal Rifai and also sharing a huge amount of guest overlap
It's a testament to just how incredible creative and swift Adal is that both Matt Young (Usidore) and Arnie Niekamp (Arnie Niekamp)--who are professional improvisers!--are surprised and delighted by the things he comes up with.
(It's also a testament to just how fast JPC is that he's one step ahead almost half the time.)
"Opposite Day" came up and I started wondering about origins, like with tag or ring around the rosie.
I made no progress on that mystery, but the #Wikipedia page is fun
ugh, how long do the T'Pol/Tucker massage episodes go on?
