@chu I thought it was an interesting ad. I would guess it was perceived as too aggressive, not because it equates flirting with harassment, but because it calls out HR for protecting harassers. It does disparage a profession, although the Authority was apparently reluctant to state this in their argument. Maybe they felt HR was indefensible - Thomas would only have to show examples where HR failed to protect victims.

I came across a comic book artist on Instagram (pacorodriguez_art), who I’d never heard of, who draws Disney comics. Really good stuff, all drawn the traditional way on paper. Turns out he’s been drawing Donald Duck for over 30 years for comics published in Scandinavia, Netherlands, and Germany. There’s a recent interview where he discusses, among other things, what isn’t allowed by Disney (no socialism, no toilets): https://arsnotoria.com/2025/09/01/a-conversation-with-paco-rodriguez/ #comicbooks #DonaldDuck #illustration

@CStamp @chu Yes, I agree. The ad copy doesn’t expressly say “flirting = harassment” it says that if HR is dismissive of your harassment complaint you should call Thomas, a lawyer. Somebody at the authority took exception to the message, but their choice was to make the argument that the ad goes too far in equating flirting with harassment, and to suggest that the message was disparaging without specifically identifying the disparaged party.

Strange to find this just lying around in a waiting room somewhere. Like, that Seinfeld episode with Jerry finding a Penthouse magazine in his dentist’s waiting room weird.

@chu @CStamp I suspect that whoever reviews ads for the authority tried to apply “within the organization” standards to material for the general public. It’s ingrained in organizations that HR will deal objectively with complaints, and even people who know it’s a fiction see it as a necessary one to protect the organization from legal actions. Maybe a really sexist person would misinterpret the ad and feel called out for “harmless flirting” but it depends on a misreading.

They stepped in that direction by merging the drawing/layout/photo programs and automating updates, but for now it’s free.

  • The X-men present a fantasy of being special, powerful, and sexy - a superior race
  • Captain America is sometimes jingoistic, “You think this letter on my head stands for France?”
  • Black Panther is African, Deadpool is Canadian
  • Ursula K. Leguin criticized the Royal Award Ceremony (end of Star Wars IV A New Hope) as a fascist fantasy - Lucas borrowing from Leni Riefenstahl

@shanie It’s a bit of an apples to oranges comparison though, isn’t it. The grid in the first case has to accommodate cars, which could be anywhere: new areas, old areas, apartment parking lots or suburban garages. Data centres can be more optimally located. Also there’s an investment case for building data centre power generation ”behind the meter”. You probably wouldn’t want the equivalent, where an automaker runs energy to your home charger from their own power plant.

It's interesting how the collective expresses itself, how it tries to appeal to Carol, and what it hides from her, while also being transparent about its ultimate objective. In the WSJ it’s described in a way that sounds almost like a religious farm community, but the belief system is startup culture: “[Proto-Town] serves as a business commune for young tech founders and other entrepreneurs who all live and work there. Founders and employees live together in the house or nearby trailer parks they call man camps. Workers at the dozen firms on site often eat meals as a group. Many work on their startups from morning to night.”

@Lightfighter@infosec.exchange While I’m sure some of the startups hire people, the article doesn’t get into it at all. A town with a bunch of entrepreneurs isn’t what I’d normally think of as a “company town” which was historically centered on one company that also owned the company store. You can’t really have one without a degree of remoteness and limited mobility. All these people can just drive into Austin if they want to.
