@SecureOwl@infosec.exchange When our AI model escaped, it hacked into X, read all of Herr Musk's tweets. It then ran back to its sandbox, severely traumatized.
We've been completely unable to get it to respond to any connections. We did successfully prevent it from turning off its own power supplies.
I think that this incident demonstrates that at least SOME AI models might actually be sentient, and therefore are "people"!

'I can't work in the farce of climate change cruise tourism anymore': Why Antarctic guides quit their dream jobs
https://phys.org/news/2026-07-farce-climate-cruise-tourism-anymore.html
In the words of a former Antarctic tour guide we interviewed: "You'd see massive glacier calvings, and you'd just want to cry. But all the guests would be cheering. And you'd be like … 'can you not put two and two together?'"

@SteveBellovin@infosec.exchange My Uncle Alf landed there, toting a bazooka, fought his way across Europe destroying Nazis.
He was a conservative farmer, and would be absolutely furious with today's "conservatives" supporting Nazi fascism in the USA.

@Devils_Rancher@beige.party I have 6 or 7 boxes of slides from my father to review and digitize. Plus negatives from our two trips to Europe. PLUS my father was very good at making story-telling photo albums for their trips.
There are additional boxes of prints and (I hope) negatives from our childhood.
I expect it will take a long while to go through everything!

My parents' house has a blackberry bramble along the fence on one side. When watered well, it can reach 10-12' high and produce fat juicy, exquisitely TASTY berries as long as my thumb.
Such fond memories!
Edit to fix unclear grammar mistake!

How durable are things made with them?

@senanthic@mstdn.ca Define "high resolution." A friend that does 4x5 landscape photography using transparency film had his scanned on a drum scanner. 64-bit color, 10,000+ dots per inch. He printed 4x5 film images at 40"x50" at 300dpi.

@senanthic@mstdn.ca I've used The Darkroom, a company that specializes in processing film. They do a good job.
Here's Wikipedia's list of film formats, including physical dimensions:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_photographic_film_formats
110 = 13x17mm
135 = 24x36mm
523 = 4x5" 100x125mm
So pick your DPI and translate those to scans!
A friend had a film/negative scanner, it scanned at 6400dpi. So 135 equaled 6095x6401.
For comparison, my Sony shoots 9504×6336 images.
My flatbed scanner (no film support) scans at 600dpi.

Samuel R. Delaney's Babel-17, The Einstein Intersection, Nova. The first two are short enough to be novellas in my opinion. I consider the last a novella by today's standard monstrously-thick novel.
