#Antarctica A remote island near Antarctica is no longer home to the world's largest penguin colony as climate-driven changes to ocean food chains likely devastated its once-thriving inhabitants, a new study said Wednesday. Drone and satellite images showed that the volcanic island of Zavodovski lost more than 680,000 -- or two-thirds -- of its chinstrap penguins between 2011 and 2025, according to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) https://today.rtl.lu/news/science-and-environment/climate-change-strips-islands-title-of-largest-penguin-colony-study-1075218328 #ClimateChange #climate

#Antarctica One of the most important regions on Earth for predicting future sea-level rise, it contains enough ice to raise global mean sea levels by an estimated 3 to 4 meters (10–13 feet) The review concludes that major gaps in observations mean scientists still cannot confidently predict how rapidly change could occur or what climate thresholds might trigger large-scale retreat https://phys.org/news/2026-09-climate-threat-lurk-beneath-antarctica.html #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #pollution #ecology #environment

#Antarctica Hidden climate risk beneath East Antarctica, new study warns It holds enough ice to raise global sea levels by three to four metres and, until recently, has been viewed as relatively stable. Now a major new study is calling for urgent research on East Antarctica’s Wilkes Subglacial Basin and its potential to dramatically increase sea-levels as the climate warms https://www.earthsciences.nz/news/hidden-climate-risk-beneath-east-antarctica-new-study-warns #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #pollution #ecology #environment #climate

#Antarctica even modest mistakes in that area can affect projections of warming, sea ice change, and regional weather Even so, all three underestimated downward longwave radiation, or the heat emitted by clouds and the atmosphere back toward the surface. The study traced that shortfall to simulated clouds containing too much ice, reducing their heat emission, along with model temperatures that were colder than what the instruments observed https://www.thecooldown.com/green-tech/southern-ocean-climate-modeling-antarctic-expedition/ #ClimateChange #climate

Last month saw a very large temperature anomaly gradient between the Weddell Sea region and West #Antarctica. In fact, this was one of the very few places anywhere on the globe with colder than average temperatures in August, especially compared to older baselines (e.g., 1951-1980). Data from ERA5.

'I can't work in the farce of climate change cruise tourism anymore': Why Antarctic guides quit their dream jobs

https://phys.org/news/2026-07-farce-climate-cruise-tourism-anymore.html

In the words of a former Antarctic tour guide we interviewed: "You'd see massive glacier calvings, and you'd just want to cry. But all the guests would be cheering. And you'd be like … 'can you not put two and two together?'"

"If you’ve ever questioned whether your work aligns with your values, these former Antarctic tour guides offer a thoughtful perspective on balancing career, wellbeing, and environmental responsibility. Their stories may also inspire a deeper appreciation for protecting Antarctica by leaving it untouched." https://theconversation.com/i-cant-work-in-the-farce-of-climate-change-cruise-tourism-anymore-why-antarctic-guides-quit-their-dream-jobs-286216 #news #ClimateChange #ClimateCollapse #ClimateNews #antarctica

🚨new publication alert🚨 Some types of El Niño lead to more melt over the Ross Ice Shelf in #Antarctica. In our paper led by PhD student Sanjiban Dutta, we look at the synoptic relationship where Eastern Pacific El Niños channel warm moist air over the Ross Ice Shelf. One to watch with the current #ElNino building.. #ClimateDiary https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2025JD045932

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🌋✨ #MountErebus on #RossIsland, #Antarctica, emits microscopic #crystals of elemental gold in its volcanic plume. Scientists found faceted #gold particles up to 60 micrometers wide in #snow up to 1,000 km away. The #volcano releases about 80 grams of gold dust daily, but how the crystals form remains an open question. 👉 https://www.sciencealert.com/the-worlds-southernmost-active-volcano-is-spewing-out-gold-every-day #geology #earthscience #earth #science #nature #atmosphere
