Still seeking and learning. Dabbling in photography and astrophotography, all images mine except where noted. No AI, ever. May also post about the current US hellscape as well as music, sci-fi and other lit, pop culture, and other obsessions. No to patriarchy, white supremacy, imperialism, colonialism; yes to kindness, empathy, love, and justice. He/him. Black Lives Matter. Trans Rights are Human Rights. Science is Real. Abolish ICE. Free Palestine. Just trying to be decent in a world gone mad.

So happy to have captured this — my best astro photo to date. This is, of course, the Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbor at a stone’s throw of 2.5 million light years away. You can also see M110 and M32, its two brightest satellite galaxies (out of a whopping 35 dwarf galaxies orbiting around it). Shot with a Dwarf 3 telescope under a starry Idaho night sky, which was stunning even with the naked eye. #photography #astronomy #astrophotography #galaxy #andromeda #dwarf3

#FotoVorschlag “Nutzfahrzeuge” (Commercial or utility vehicles) Mere days after the monster blizzard that hit us last February, much of the city was clear of snow. These snowplows were probably just returning to their station, but in my eyes it could have been a hero’s parade.😊 #photography #streetphotography #snowplows #skyscrapers #urbanlandscape #cityscenes #nyc

The sky over Brooklyn as I was coming home last night, with smoke from the Canadian wildfires. They’re taking the sky from us: the big polluters driving climate chaos, as well as the tech bros sending up satellites to crowd out the stars. Time to get mad and take it back. #photography #nightphotography #streetphotography #wildfires #climatechange #climatechaos #brooklyn #nyc

Saturn rising, 2. A short video of Saturn rising over Brooklyn early this morning. The bright dot trailing it is Titan, Saturn’s largest moon (larger than our moon and even Mercury). #astrophotography #video #planet #saturn #titan

@CiaraNi@mastodon.green Grumpy New Yorker here. Swift’s wedding shut down the MSG area and made the surrounding businesses lose money, which wouldn’t have happened if she’d held it at some gorgeous private estate. And setting aside her very real talents and achievements, I find some of her business practices, use (or non-use) of her platform, and connections problematic, alongside the fact that there are no ethical billionaires. So if you DID mean her some disrespect, I wouldn’t mind.😁

I totally get that his music moved millions, that he’s fought for worthy causes, that he’s a cultural icon. But we always seem to give grace to men like this and downplay their abuses because of the “larger context” of their “contributions” to society. We say: “Yes, he abused women BUT his music was so important to the world.” “Yes, he targeted vulnerable kids BUT his art and advocacy were so inspiring and influential.” Men like him get to be “complicated” — and ultimately forgiven. 2/4

What if we flipped this script? What if we said, “He may have inspired us with his music, BUT he groomed young girls”? “He may have been a public face for a good movement, BUT he ruined many vulnerable lives”? What would the world look like if there were some lines we refused to cross? If we stopped celebrating and forgiving abusers because their art made us feel good? 3/4

Replying to

@redsad@ohai.social There’s an essay (or several) out there about how our stories tend to put arguments about revolutionary change and dismantling the status quo in the mouths of villains (Ivy, Thanos, Killmonger, etc) so that they’ll be easier to dismiss, and what that says about us.

@AkaSci@fosstodon.org DST is a 20th-century invention, though; presumably people got along fine without it before. We could still mark the transition to and from winter by, say, keeping the time standard but shifting the hours of school and business (switching between 8-4 and 9-5).🤷🏽‍♂️

Replying to

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social I recently saw an interview clip of the Artemis II crew, and I think either Reid or Victor said that something that surprised them was the “three-dimensionality” of space — that the stars appear more 3-D out there than they do when seen from Earth. Do you think you could expand on that? I’m having a hard time visualizing how much more “3-D” a field of distant points of light could look. Is it that the parallax effect on stars was more noticeable at their speed?

Replying to

@PWei888@fediscience.org @vicgrinberg@mastodon.social They did turn off the lights in the capsule to take photos, and even put T-shirts up over the windows facing the Earth to block out Earthshine. So maybe it got pretty dark? I found the interview clip and posted it in another reply here. Jeremy Hansen talks about how he could see that some stars were closer than others, and how he found it hard to describe to people. Maybe you just had to be there.

@Star12Mt@masto.nyc Right, Splash Mountain. I think they’ve re-themed it now, to get rid of the racist elements of “Song of the South.” Still a good name for a water ride, though; I wonder if they could have kept it.
