@cstross@wandering.shop @pluralistic@mamot.fr Yep, the Futurist Manifesto laid the ground for the Fascist Manifesto and is full of the love of speed and machines, revelling in violence “We will glorify war - the only true hygiene of the world”, it loathes women, hates thoughfulness and education. Andreessen’s recent “Techno-Optimist Manifesto” is an evolution of that, deliberately rewording elements of the Futurist Manifesto, but hiding the explicit love of violence. Hideous people all.

RE: @TransitionShow@mastodon.energy

The ever insightful @chrisnelder@mastodon.energy talks with oil analyst Rory Johnston about the clusterf*ck currently underway in the Gulf. It is depressing but well worth a listen. Global oil and gas supplies are screwed and will be for a long while to come, no matter what. To quote IEA director Fatih Birol it is “the greatest global energy security threat in history”. The markets are in the Wile-E-Coyote phase of having walked off a cliff but have not yet realised they are about to plummet. #energy #wariran

RE: @RenewEconomyRSSFeed@mastodon.au

“But renewables can’t power heavy industry like nuclear or fossil fuels.” is an argument I’ve encountered often. Meanwhile, a gold mine, which involves mining and crushing hard rocks, has managed to run on 93.8% renewables for a solid month, they are aiming to scale up to 100%. #solarpower #renewables

@BashStKid @ChrisMayLA6 @stekopf Gravity is a very weak force, so 1 tonne lifted by 1000m only stores 2.7kWh, which is not a lot. You aren’t getting many MWh of storage in mine shafts that way unless you can turn them into pumped storage somehow. It’s also relatively complex and fragile machinery that needs to do it all. Dams get away with it because water is cheap and we can store a lot of it.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run Ideally the fallout should directly hit the NASDAQ 100 index as a reliable pricing reference because they’ve shot their own longterm trustworthiness for a very short-term gain. Passive index trackers funds should just drop them from their portfolio, or come up with an alternative “NASDAQ 100 without the premature forced listings” index.

@Geri@mastodon.online And Norway put all the money they earned from oil and gas into a sovereign wealth fund whose income now covers about 20% of their government’s expenditure. The UK’s plan under the then Labour government was to do something similar, but Thatcher came in, sold it all off and used any revenues they received on the sugar rush of tax breaks to bribe the middle classes.

@robloblaw @gusseting @JulianOliver Fortescue mining has an agressive decarbonisation plan based on electricifcation and renewables. It should also save them money and insulate them from volatile fossil fuels prices. Meanwhile the Bellevue gold mine is already 90% wind and solar powered. So even the supposed hard cases can be electrified.

@gusseting Further to that point, the top 10 selling ICE vehicles in Australia are currently cost over ten times as much to run as the top 10 selling BEV vehicles. Cheap clean electricity will flip things around. At those prices it will flip them _fast_. https://gulfnews.com/business/energy/march-2026-to-change-everything-tipping-point-for-global-ev-adoption-1.500484007
