It's ultimately so stupid that it can't even "play chess" and predict and anticipate possible outcomes of a dialog. It only ever sees one move ahead, so to speak.
I've said for 40 years that true artificial intelligence isn't even science fiction, it's fantasy. Humans aren't even capable of creating a bug-free operating system: how the hell can we possibly manage to create software that is self-aware and thinks for itself without imploding?

She's way past crying now. She's in the need-to-take-a-year-off phase now. I can't talk to her about any current developments without her waving me away. In that situation, I am like you were with that post. I try to talk to her because I need her to acknowledge it, need her to help motivate me to do what comes next, for our survival.

That anecdote doesn't reflect government misbehavior. Rather, it describes the criminal antisocial behavior of "conservative" citizens, who are tribalistic and intolerant, who "other" people whose appearance or behavior upsets them, and dehumanize them and criminalize their behavior because of the mere upset.
These are the people who elected Trump and give Trump his power. They are just as much criminals as is Trump.

As I've been saying for a while now, the core motivation for conservatives and their entire ideology is no more complex than malignant selfishness.
That is why MAGA idolizes Trump, because they all share that selfish motive, and selfishness is a literal crime against egalitarian society. Can you imagine how well ant colonies would function if any colony members were selfish? Those colonies would perish (and that is why there's no selfish ants).
Even if we don't or can't make selfishness a legal crime, we need to put it back in the pre-Trump cage that was previously its home and put an end to the Paradox of Tolerance.

The intolerant percentage is MUCH higher than ten percent. That is precisely why we find ourselves in this current global mess. The percentage is high enough that, with Machiavellian effort, that minority can gain dominance over the apathetic majority and make life for outliers a living hell.

There was an exception to Charlie's position the size of an oil tanker: he was a tribalist and a hypocrite first. Everything he said, every position he took, had exceptions carved out for both himself selfishly and, by tribal extension, any other humans that he personally considered worthy or valuable (his tribe).
So no, Charlie didn't support what happened to Charlie because he was one of the intended and unspoken exceptions.

Certainly I know that. It's precisely why I know how upsetting and disturbing it is for you, because I know that you know that, too. Something like that invokes a fight-or-flight response, but you've already said you can't flee (damn, I remember some things). Fighting is not something that comes naturally to us, though, we're pacifists.

How does this output compare to the distortion caused by human re-tellings of the same information, stories, anecdotes repeatedly over time? One the surface, at least, the result appears rather similar.

I think I've only ever heard this stated as descriptive fact without an explanation why it occurs. It certainly doesn't only happen in New Zealand. Are non-conservative voters really consistently so much more apathetic about the process that they must reluctantly drag themselves to register at the last second?
This appears to be one of the several reasons why conservatives always have an outsized political presence relative to their actual numbers: they're DRIVEN and tribal and Machiavellian.

Ultimately selfishness is the elephant standing in the way of our species success.
It's two of us saying it. This is what will keep us at the bottom of the Kardashev scale.
Will anyone listen and not reject it out of hand? That seems to be the habit. Any mention of selfishness seems to make people uncomfortable because everyone has self-interest, but there's a difference between considering your own interest in the larger context of others' interest and not giving a damn about that context at all.
Conservatives fall in that latter bracket. If they consider the interests of others at all, it's only those that they personally value (tribalism). NONE of them are egalitarian, not one. Conservatism is all about the -isms: tribalism, racism, fascism. All arise from selfishness.
Selfishness and its social cousin tribalism will yet be the death of us all.
