Heartbreaking: Thousands of fluffy emperor penguin chicks have drowned as Antarctic sea ice shatters beneath them — too early for the babies to swim or stay warm.
The IUCN has now officially listed emperor penguins as Endangered. Record-low sea ice, driven by global heating, is collapsing their breeding grounds. Entire colonies are falling into the ocean. Chicks that don't drown often freeze to death, soaked and helpless.
This isn't some distant future scenario. It's happening now — in 2022 alone, four out of five colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea were wiped out. Scientists are calling them a "sentinel species": what we're doing to the planet is playing out in real time on the ice.
The emperor penguin’s move to endangered is a stark warning: climate change is accelerating the extinction crisis before our eyes.

Ken Henry, the bloke who actually knows how Treasury works, just dropped the truth bomb: ignore the gas giants' self-serving whingeing and slap a 100% tax on their windfall profits.
These multinationals are raking it in from global crises (Russia-Ukraine, now Iran) while Australians cop the cost-of-living pain and get peanuts back in tax. Henry says it's 'socially optimal' — the investments that make sense still happen, the pure luck/profit from external shocks goes to the public purse for schools, hospitals, or even a sovereign wealth fund instead of foreign shareholders.
We've been getting ripped off for years with the weak PRRT. Time to stop the giveaway. Tax the windfall, ease the pressure on households, and tell the CEOs crying 'uninvestable' to take a seat. Resources belong to Australia, not just their bonus pool.
Labor has finally walked away from its promise not to touch negative gearing and capital gains tax. And honestly, good.
That “no changes” line during the 2025 election always felt more about protecting investors than fixing housing. The tax system has been rewarding people who already own multiple properties while locking younger Australians and renters out of the market.
This budget changes that.
Negative gearing will no longer apply to existing homes, while new builds stay exempt. The 50% CGT discount is being scrapped and replaced with an inflation based adjustment. Trusts will also face a 30% minimum tax rate.
The government says the changes will raise $8.1 billion over four years, with the money going into a $250 tax offset for 13.3 million workers.
Yes, Labor spent years insisting these reforms were off the table. But at least they’ve finally admitted the housing market is distorted by tax policy and decided to do something about it.
A progressive government should be willing to upset wealthy investors if it means making life fairer for renters, workers, and first home buyers.
Predictably, the usual “tax is theft” crowd will scream blue murder. But shifting the balance away from unearned property wealth and back toward people who actually work for a living is long overdue.
Yet Another Lie from Pauline Hanson
Just saw this brilliant doco on the rise and fall of Kodak Australia.
From a bloke hand-coating glass plates in a Melbourne cellar in 1884, to the massive Coburg factory pumping out film for the whole Asia-Pacific, employing thousands and capturing Aussie life for 120 years.
Then digital killed it overnight. Last roll came off the line in 2004 with barely a word.
The silent factories of our industrial past... gone, but not forgotten.
Worth a watch if you’re from Melbourne or just love our manufacturing history.
Australia has officially lost the plot.
We’ve reached the point where a Two Strong Hearts lyric could trigger legal concerns because politicians are so busy criminalising words they don’t even understand.
This isn’t about “safety” — it’s about vague laws creating fear, confusion, and self censorship. Even the ABC notes media outlets and artists are already second guessing what they can say or publish.
When a harmless 1980s pop song by John Farnham gets dragged into this mess, you know something has gone seriously wrong.
We’re sleepwalking into a country where context doesn’t matter, intent doesn’t matter — only whether someone might be offended.
That’s not democracy. That’s a chilling effect dressed up as law.
Okay this is wild — sperm whales apparently have their own phonetic "alphabet" with vowel-like sounds, tones, and layered structures that work a lot like human language.
These guys have been having deep, multi-generational conversations for millions of years. Just passing down knowledge like we do.
Honestly just a really cool reminder that we're not the only intelligent, cultural species on this planet. Nature still finds ways to blow my mind.
It started with Thatcher.
She crushed the unions, gutted the North, handed the country to the City and the super-rich — then told everyone else to just try harder.
Fast forward, and Britain is a broken, poverty-ridden nightmare: record hunger, kids going without food, parents skipping meals, food banks on every corner. The North hollowed out while London floats on finance. Populism rising — because people have had it with the establishment.
Australia’s right behind them. Same neoliberal playbook: privatisation, casual work, wage stagnation, housing through the roof, a cost-of-living crisis crushing families. We’ve been on this road since the 80s too.
Time to break the cycle before we get our own "living nightmare." Tax the rich properly. Rebuild public services. Put people before profits. Enough.

Norway's New Oil: How Norway sold the world on salmon | Foreign Correspondent
Big win for democracy! NSW’s top court just struck down those rushed post Bondi terror attack protest laws as unconstitutional. Chief Justice Bell ruled they impermissibly burdened free speech rights. Police can’t blanket ban rallies anymore. 👏
The rise of One Nation isn’t random. It follows a pattern we’ve seen in plenty of other countries.
Their support skews older, more regional, and often among people who feel left behind by the economy. There’s usually distrust in the major parties, anxiety about immigration and cultural change, and a sense that politics stopped listening.
But that’s only part of it. Politics itself has become a kind of entertainment, where conflict and outrage pull more attention than actual policy. It’s the same dynamic that lifted Trump. Figures like Pauline Hanson fit perfectly into that kind of media cycle — provocative, not detailed.
Throw in a media landscape that thrives on division, plus backing from the likes of Gina Rinehart, and you’ve got the right conditions.
This isn’t just about voters. It’s about a political system that rewards noise over substance.
Koalas in NSW were predicted to be extinct in the wild by 2050 after the Black Summer fires. Now they’re officially endangered.
Meanwhile, it’s not governments leading the charge — it’s small local groups planting trees and rebuilding habitat, one patch at a time.
This is what real action looks like.
Breaking: property portals and real estate lobbyists deeply concerned about renters. After extensive consultation with real estate agents, they’ve concluded the only way to keep rents affordable is more tax breaks, more subsidies, and even higher house prices. Strange how every ‘solution’ somehow ends with landlords getting richer.

Australia Institute research shows that Japan collects more tax from Australian gas than Australia.
Japan, a country with no gas, oil or coal reserves of its own, collected almost $40 billion over the last five years while the Australian PRRT provided only $7 billion to Australians.

News Corp's war on Victorian Labor continues unabated.
Murdoch’s Herald Sun remains relentless in its bombardment of the state Labor government. Latest example: today’s doom headline “Melbourne: ‘I’ve never known a city so paralysed by hopelessness’” — painting Victoria’s capital as a crime-ravaged disaster zone.
Yet Melbourne is probably the best-run major city in Australia.
This isn’t journalism — it’s sustained political campaigning. From the “Dictator Dan” slurs against Daniel Andrews, pandemic-era misinformation, racialised moral panics about African-Australian communities, and relentless negativity through columnists like Andrew Bolt and Peta Credlin, the Herald Sun blurs news and advocacy to push its hard conservative agenda and undermine Victorian Labor at every turn.
Yet every state election delivers the same result: a landslide for Labor. That’s why Victoria is the Education State.
There’s something quietly extraordinary about the Up series — checking in every seven years and realising you’ve been growing older alongside them.
I’ve followed it for decades, and every instalment feels like catching up with old friends… their lives, their choices, their joys and regrets. It’s one of the most human pieces of television ever made.
Really looking forward to the final chapter, 70 Up, a fitting end to a series that has captured a lifetime.

Oh wow, Angus Taylor has cracked the case. Labor’s evil ‘emissions obsession’ is why Aussie refineries are shipping fuel overseas while we pay through the nose at the pump.
Top detective work, mate. Almost like those tighter sulphur rules were brought in by the Coalition… when you were Energy Minister. With grants to upgrade the refineries themselves.
But nah, blame Bowen. Classic opposition energy move: rewrite the history, then get mad at the twist you wrote.
Big Gas is literally taking the piss out of Australia.
80% of our gas gets exported, yet 56% of it attracts ZERO royalties. Multinationals have pocketed $149 billion royalty-free while we pay the price at the pump and in our bills.
The Australia Institute made a killer TV ad to call it out – but they need our help to get it on air.
Every dollar helps make the politically impossible inevitable. Wakey wakey, Australia!

Professor Brian Cox is back in Australia with a dazzling new show called Emergence that will take audiences on a journey through the universe.
Donald Trump, fresh off getting FIFA’s shiny new ‘Peace Prize’ from his buddy Gianni Infantino for ‘uniting the world through football’ 🏆⚽, now has his envoy lobbying to kick war torn Iran out of the World Cup and hand the spot to Italy (whom have rejected the offer) instead.
Because nothing says ‘peace’ like politicising the beautiful game, starting wars, and then demanding your preferred team gets the golden ticket.
FIFA really outdid themselves with this one. Nobel Committee is laughing.

The latest court ruling against Gina Rinehart (she has to pay hundreds of millions in royalties to her late father’s business partner’s heirs) is a perfect window into how inherited wealth works in Australia.
Rinehart has topped the rich list for six years straight – $38.1 billion in 2025. This payout won’t dent her spot.
But the case (one of Australia’s longest-running) isn’t even unique: she’s fought her father’s third wife, and still fights her own kids.
The bigger point: Australia’s top 200 richest people now hold $667 billion – 100× the 1984 list, while the economy only grew 15×. Half of them inherited their wealth or will pass it on.
The old saying “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations” doesn’t hold – big wealth sticks.
So, is it time for a wealth tax (either annual or on inheritance)? Abolishing inheritance taxes in the 1970s helped fuel this gap. Greens want a tax on the richest 1%, but don’t expect Labor or Coalition to touch it soon.
Over 50 Android apps, with more than 2 million downloads, were found spreading malware on Google Play — and only after users were hit did Google respond.
Once again, app store "security" proves reactive, not preventative. Maybe time to rethink what “safe to install” really means.
