Introducing the Threadiverse Catalog I'm the maintainer of Catodon, which offers both microblogging and forums (Lemmy-compatible communities), and we noticed that discoverability is not the threadiverse's strongest point: Our server only showed forums/communities that it "knew" because someone from the server already followed them. In Reddit it's easy to see if there is a community for a subject you care about; on the Fediverse it's not that easy. So I looked at what indexes there are, and most were focused in Lemmy - lemmyverse.net has added MBin and PieFed explorers, but I was looking for something that covers more platforms, and is a unified directory, rather than per-platform only. Maybe there is something that I missed, but I didn't find what I was looking for: a directory for the threadiverse. So I decided to build it. The Threadiverse Catalog lists forums/communities from Catodon, Discourse, Friendica, Lemmy, Mbin, Mobilizon, NodeBB and PieFed. It hasn't been online for many days, so it hasn't indexed everything, but we already list over 20.000 forums/communities. If there are any bugs or other issues, please let me know. We built this primarily for Catodon, and on our latest release (26.10.0 "Bongo Cat") users have access to its results through the in-app Search and Explore features, but it's open for everyone to use. It's open source and written in Go. Other projects are also welcome to use it. Cheers =) #threadiverse #fediverse #catodon #discourse #friendica #lemmy #mbin #mobilizon #nodebb #piefed

The hardest part of joining the fediverse is the first 10 minutes. https://fediverse.info fixes that. Browse the Apps directory to pick a platform, the People directory to find folks to follow, and Starter Kits to build a feed fast. All discovery is opt-in. You only show up if you choose to. #fediverse #mastodon #misskey #pixelfed #peertube #lemmy #loops

Now you can add events to your calendar in #FediHood. The map has also been redesigned to display them all, and end dates have been added. You can also subscribe to #Lemmy communities. You will get their posts in a dedicated timeline, with the ability to reply, vote and create threads. You can already submit communities that target an area, they will be available to people near them.

#FediHood now supports #Lemmy through #ActivityPub. You can subscribe/unsubscribe from groups, read threaded discussions with their upvote scores, and reply or upvote yourself (through the fav button). This is the first step: FediHood will also automatically split messages into city, region and country groups that everyone on the fediverse using groups will be able to interact with.

Private groups Lately, I've been seeing various people claiming that fediverse doesn't have private groups. They often point to some task force at w3c that is supposedly working to fill the gap.

However, fediverse has had private groups for a very long time:

  • Hubzilla channels. This project probably had private groups before ActivityPub. The implementation was later adapted for ActivityPub and refined in subsequent forks, Streams and Forte. It is now partially documented in FEP-171b: Conversation Containers.
  • Smithereen groups. This implementation is documented in FEP-400e: Publicly-appendable ActivityPub collections (published in 2021) and FEP-db0e: Authentication mechanism for non-public groups.
  • Lemmy communities. Private groups were proposed in Lemmy RFC 0005 and have been implemented in the development version. There is a test instance running this version (Lemmy v1.0b) at https://voyager.lemmy.ml/

There are probably other implementations that I am not aware of.

I got a #Lemmy account set up on the #Fediverse at lemmy.radio, and I'm looking for suggestions for communities to follow that discuss things like:

  • the Gemini Protocol
  • Ham Radio Operation CW
  • the Fediverse in general
  • fountain pens and penmanship
  • music synthesis
  • Productivity and automation
  • Software development on macOS
  • HaikuOS

Let me know if you have any suggestions, and I'll subscribe.

Este script sirve para descargar todos los enlaces youtube de una comunidad de Lemmy (en el ejemplo Blahaj.zone), los ubica en dos archivos: uno con descripciones e información del enlace, otro con los enlaces solos para listas de reproducción o descargas. That’s some really evil shit: https://lemmy.world/post/49794261 So Tesseract (an alternative Lemmy client) downloads a blocking/filtering list from its servers, something that most people likely weren’t aware. This “feature” was introduced November last year (version 1.5.0) and is described as “Tesseract attempts to filter out as much baseline toxicity as possible” in the settings option allowing it to be disabled. The list currently contains 544 (!) individual users and 2282 (!!) regular expressions applied to user names. Among the expressions censored in user names are: Democrat, Republican, Israel, ElonMusk, trump, amerika and billionaire. There is also the regular expression usa?(.*)?terrorist which seems to be intended for the phrase “USA are a terrorist state.” The list also contains 97 censored communities and 32 regular expressions applied to community names. Finally, there are 352 (!) “forbidden” domains and 296 filtered phrases including proletariat, epstein class, Jesse Welles and “Hi, I’m an AI engineer based in Japan”. The author also disliked 👉👈 emoji. Judging by the project’s issues some people only just found out that they are being censored and are wondering why. #tesseract #lemmy

A reef isn't a single organism. Things settle where conditions suit them, and the substrate they share is what makes them a reef and not a scattering of unrelated lifeforms.

ActivityPub is that substrate. The Fediverse Beyond Mastodon series is complete. We published four posts about some of what's growing on it:

  1. The microblogging platforms that aren't Mastodon: Misskey, Pleroma, Akkoma, Friendica, GoToSocial. Several predate Mastodon, and some were federating before ActivityPub existed.

  2. The visual layer: Pixelfed, Loops, PeerTube. Your work sits on infrastructure you or your community control, and no ranking system decides who sees it.

  3. The writing platforms: Ghost, WordPress, WriteFreely, Micro.blog, Plume, Flipboard. Each arrived at federation by a different route.

  4. Forums, books, and music: Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin, NodeBB, Bookwyrm, Bandwagon.

I will create a Lemmy community soon. It will be named "automobile", inspired by 4chan but without their culture, and with up-to-date sources and more information. I didn't have my own car before but considering many people need cars to survive, having a community like this would be very helpful. I'm living in North America, especially here I can't escape from car ownership. I will share the link here once it's done. It will be a friendly community so you can even share a post about selling your car etc. #Canada #Canadian #Lemmy #Car #Cars #Auto #Automobile #Automobiles #Driving #NorthAmerica #USA #EU #DIYorDIE #DIY #repair #DIYrepair #UseItAgain #UsedCar #UsedCars #LibreSoftware #fedi #fediverse #4chan
