RE: @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org

I was finally motivated to pick up one of these devices after reading David's review.

Just got it working under Alpine Linux - the default driver stuff works as referenced on his website. I'll need to dig into this further to see what customization I want.

The device itself has a great feel, has a feeling of quality. I got a boring black one and it coordinates with my cheap and cheerful keyboard I mentioned the other week. Ha.

Anyway, never had one of these drawing devices before - learning curve inbound I expect.

I love that feeling you get when you finish tuning your Linux desktop box with everything optimized and "just so" and nothing left to mess with or install. Colours, wallpaper, apps, hardware acceleration, menus, widgets/plasmoids, filesystems backed up, etc. Oh, that's just me? Never mind. Carry on. #Linux #AlpineLinux

Latest screenshot. Still rockin' the RDNA2 GPU; should try the RDNA3 one again, there's been a whack of kernel updates.

Things you don't think about before getting a drawing tablet...

I've setup the drawing tablet to the left of my keyboard so I can spin either way depending on what I am doing. My keyboard is on the desk in front/under the right large screen.

My two main screens are on monitor arms from behind and the small screen placed in this orientation gives mouse navigation a smooth, natural (i.e. visual) usage path.

I'm right handed so this works for me - for now. Perhaps it'll change around the more into it I go.

Oh, and if anyone was wondering - works great with GIMP too!

I guess since the whole "Flatpak creating a dependency on systemd" bullshit has surfaced this week there has been some other conversations about systemd going on throughout the Fediverse. I've seen some oblique references to Debian making an effort to make OpenRC more viable as an alternate init system. That's about all I've gathered on my hit-n-run timeline surfing the last several days. Not sure if this is an official Debian project or just someone's wish list. Anyone have the skinny? Links to actual discussions? #Linux #Debian #systemd #OpenRC #Flatpak

Spent a lot of time today playing with OPNSense (err, fighting - a while back my whining about not getting along with networking was no joke).

Eventually got what I wanted to work to actually work: OPNsense as an exposed node inside a Bell Giga Hub network and routing/NAT'ing to a dmz host hanging off said exposed node. But omfg, I suck at this stuff. It's painful - be glad you can't watch me work. Ha.

Aaannyyyywwwaaaayyyyyy...

If you haven't already upgraded to the latest OPNSense (26.7), you may be surprised by some of the quality of life GUI clean up and more impressively the sped up boot time. On my N150 based box it boots 'super fast' like a normal PC compared to the old fashioned, slow thing it was doing before. No hard data to share, just a seat of the pants anecdote.

More monkeying around with OpenBSD. I spent a bunch of time getting LXQt working but the themeing was taking too much time so I threw more ram at the VM and installed KDE. The goal was to learn about OpenBSD, not LXQT. Ha.

Lots of the standard apps are there in OpenBSD but I need to find out how to get Librewolf and Waterfox going. Having done zero research, I'm assuming I need to compile from source.

I saw an article out using "Molly" as an alternate Signal Messenger client (xn--gckvb8fzb.com/if-you-must-use-signal-use-molly/). May try it in the future.

The KDE Plasma version is 6.4.5. IIRC KDE is stopping X11 support so I will need to figure out something else I guess. I've seen threads about Wayland on OpenBSD but didn't go down the rabbit hole yet. What little I read implied not ready for prime time.

The VM feels pretty snappy even though the QEMU agent doesn't really help with video options. This is using the VGA driver setup to get a decent resolution.

I really need to get this Jeep back on the road. I miss it.

Sometime around 2017 (IIRC) I got nostalgic for a little "netbook" type computer and decided, for some reason, that an HP Stream 14 would scratch that itch.

These are really low spec machines, even for 2016-2017. It came with Windows 10 and the first Windows Update basically filled the disk and effectively bricked the device. LOL!

I installed Linux on it after that (ofc) but didn't really use it much. So slow....

I was digging around in my service manuals library this evening and stumbled over it in a drawer of files... for some unknown reason it was in the drawer.

I started it up thinking it was still running Arch from back before Covid and might be entertaining to try to get it to update to the present.

Hmm, Alpine 3.21 boots console but sway is installed. Weird, no recollection of doing anything with this machine 12-18 months ago. "I'm not saying it's aliens..."

Ok, Alpine updates to 3.23 without issues. I'm not much of a tiling window manager person so I installed Plasma. Bad idea! With 4GB of ram and an afterthought of a CPU and storage it doesn't run very well at all.

Installed LXQt with labwc and it runs great! Tweaking and themeing to come. (Hi @Tionisla@mastodon.bsd.cafe 👋 )

Not sure what I'm going to do with this machine but currently it is pretty usable for simple stuff. Screen and keyboard sucks, pretty close to e-waste. Lesson: ~$200 (retail) laptop is about as good as you would expect a $200 laptop to be. Ha.

I managed to get the 11700k to have a pkg idle at ~5.5W (from ~14.5W). This is running a full KDE Plasma desktop and driving two 4K displays. Go into your BIOS and change all the C-states settings from "Auto" to "Enabled", C-10. That's all it took. Well, I installed tlpd and acpid but I doubt they contributed a lot to reducing the number. I'm content with this for now. The AMD 3600X - can't do a damn thing with it - other than turn it off. I'll probably do that. Much cheaper than replacing with a 5650GE. Ha.

Thinking about a new domain+project... Anyone have the TL;DR; on self hosted fediverse software? Mastodon vs Snac vs Pleroma vs ? I'm looking for something that is super low maintenance and lightweight / easy on resources but as full featured as practical within those constraints. Something easy to tune re: post lengths and media types would be cool too. A "text first" platform is desired. I've run Mastodon in the past and it's like fishing with nukes for this use case. What's out there? #Fediverse #Mastodon #snac #web #selfHosting #SelfHosted

To add insult to injury, the other end of the cable was Lightning and is the only way to connect the iPhone to the car in order to use Maps. And of course the crappy Lighting cable and iPhone are old enough that if you look at it more than once per minute it randomly disconnects because... Lighting... terrible connector is terrible.

Fumbling around in the dark in the car at 4 AM to drive my son to the airport in the city... Not at my best and very low tolerance levels. Minor dramas. I need a nap. Ha.

And I don't get how the 10700k gets ~1W for pkg as displayed in btop, turbostat, etc. Can't be correct. Mind you, both the 3600X and 10700K machines have kill-a-watts and the Intel is ~20W less than the AMD (65W vs 87W). Weird.

Is there anyone out there running an AMD 5650GE based system running Linux or BSD? Can you tell us your CPU and GPU idle power numbers as displayed in btop? Maybe this is an "easy button" of sorts to reduce power on an existing AMD AM4 system without going through the machinations of new mobo, ram, etc., etc. Get most of the way there? #Linux #RunBSD #AMD #5650GE #PowerConsumption #Power #HomeLab #SelfHosting #SelfHosted #SOHO

Is there a "trick" to getting Firefox/Waterfox/spin_of_choice to actually reload images from source when you press Shift-Reload / Shift-Ctrl-R ?

Sometimes it does it - most of the time it keeps reloading the same image from cache for a really long time regardless how many times you shift-reload. Closing the browser doesn't help most of the time.

What am I missing?

Ok, I think I've got this display card under control - or so it seems. It hasn't crashed since Wednesday.

I guess this is a combo AMD RDNA3 Navi23 and KDE Plasma (+ Wayland?) bug...

I backed out all my Linux kernel command line switches for AMD GPUs and it crashed to green screen in less than a half hour. So, re-adding them stopped that from happening.

... amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x410 amdgpu.tmz=0 amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 amdgpu.sg_display=0 ...

And then the cursor thing is fixed <?!> by adding

KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1

Currently this is what is set:

cat /proc/$(pidof kwin_wayland)/environ | tr '\0' '\n' | grep KWIN :

KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1 KWIN_DRM_NO_DIRECT_SCANOUT=1 KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1

From a user experience point of view I don't see any difference with that software cursor setting.

There's another wrinkle to this that might be a factor but I can't really test around it currently. This is a multi-head machine and one screen is connected via HDMI and one is DP.

Perhaps this wouldn't be a problem if both screens were connected via the same type of connector.

Both screens are set to the same refresh frequency. But, in the display control app one reads back at 60.00 Hz while the other is 60.000 Hz. Minor thing right? But in trying to make this work I've seen references to AMD GPU weirdness in multi-head configurations where the refresh rates were different between screens. Red herring perhaps.

Anyway, don't know if there are (or will be) any people trying to make a RX 5800 XT GPU behave under Linux but this seems to be what worked for me and my dual head setup. I'll update if anything changes.
